The Ghost Network: A Novel | Catie Disabato
14 posts | 21 read | 16 to read
Has the worlds hottest pop star been kidnapped, joined a secret sect, or simply gone into hiding? The answer lies in the abandoned subway stations of Chicago . . . One minute insanely famous pop singer Molly Metropolis is on her way to a major performance in Chicago, and the next, shes gone. A journalist whos been covering Molly joins the singer's personal assistant in an increasingly desperate search to find her, guided by a journal left behind in her hotel room, and possible clues hidden in her songsall of which seem to point to an abandoned line in the Chicago subway system. It leads them to a map of half-completed train lines underneath Chicago, which in turn leads them to the secret, subterranean headquarters of an obscure intellectual sectand the realization that theyve gone too far to turn back. And if a superstar can disappear without a trace . . . what can happen to these young women? Suspenseful and wildly original, The Ghost Network is a novel about larger-than-life fantasiesof love, sex, pop music, amateur detective work, and personal reinvention. Debut novelist Catie Disabato bursts on the scene with an ingeniously plotted, witty, haunting mystery. From the Trade Paperback edition.

It won't stop gushing about the so-called "Age of Exploration" and which white guy "discovered" (my scare quotes, decidedly not the author's) this or that already-inhabited landmass. "Unknown" this, "uncharted" that. I didn't want this much imperialist propaganda with my silly conspiracy story, fuck you very much.

batsy Oh damn. I was looking forward to this. 5y
Bertha_Mason @batsy I'm sorry :( 5y
batsy No, it's OK! I may or may not still read it but it's good to be prepared for the #casualimperialism 5y

"Once Molly and Taer's story begins to take definitive shape, it quickly fizzles into absurdity, like a map of a world with slightly distorted proportions--almost normal looking at first, but on a second viewing, a terrible deviation, a ghost of a place that never was, a land that couldn't be, a burning and terrible world beneath everything that we know to be real."

I'm about 80 pages into this and I'm finding it a slooooog. I hate DNF'ing, but I don't know if I can keep going.

Update: bailed. Still undecided on this one! It's written in a really unique style, and I'm waiting/hoping for it to all come together!

I‘m a little confused; but in a good way 🤔. A story about a secret society, a missing pop superstar and the Chicago subway system. It reads as a true crime account/memoir. About 3/4 quarters of the way through and I‘m itching to see the ending. (Plus the cover is amazing!)

I really enjoy it when a novel can take a conspiracy theory and run away with it. On the other hand, it's actually really disappointing when a book TRIES to make a conspiracy theory feel like a big deal, but then I get to the end I can't muster up anything more strenuous than an "Eh" and move on. It's a pity this book is so forgettable, because it's actually pretty fun while you're reading it.

I was so excited to read this book when I got back from my travels in late November...and then I just got stuck. The story was interesting (missing pop star, secret society for architecture?!), and the format was creative (like a nonfiction investigative book about the situation), but for some reason I was slugging through it.
I've read 10+ books since I've started this one, but I do hope to return and finish at some point. #slowread #readjanuary

So now that I've put The Wall of Storms to bed, I decided to cast around for a one-shot read to give myself some breathing room after Liu's massive (and heartbreaking) epic. Decided to randomize my TBR, and this came out on top. Let's see how this goes :).

Bummed. This book was tough to get through. It was like reading a research paper where the author abandoned all rules about using the first person. Not for me.

susanw Oh dear, that sucks! I have this one sitting on my shelf. 8y
KilgoreTrout Maybe you'd like it, @susanw ! It seems like quite a few people were big fans. There was just far too much weird, conspiracy philosophy for me and not enough mystery. 8y

Just listened to the author on the Otherppl podcast and remembered how much I loved this 2015 debut that expertly mixes pop culture with esoteric French philosophy and a creepy mystery to boot.

Kris10felicetti I'm so glad you checked out otherppl!! 8y
Britafish Yes, it's great! Thanks so much for the rec. 8y

This book is so great. Like a more funny, more readable David Foster Wallace novel.
