Named one of the summer's best books by People, Glamour,The Huffington Post, and Pure Wow Publishers Weekly Book of the Week Named one ofRefinery 29s 21 New Authors to Watch in 2015The first person to break your heart isnt always your boyfriend. Sometimes its your best friend. Maggie, Lindsey, and Nina have been friends for most of their lives. The girls grew up together in a dead-end Florida town on the outskirts of Orlando, and the love and loyalty they have for one another have been their only constants. Now nineteen and restless, the girls spend empty summer days bouncing between unfulfilling jobs, the beach, and their favorite local bar, The Shamrock. Its there that a chance encounter with a movie star on the last night of his life changes everything. Passing through Orlando, Sam Decker comes to The Shamrock seeking anonymity, but finds Maggie, Lindsey, and Nina instead. Obsessed with celebrity magazines that allow them a taste of the better lives they might have had, the girls revel in his company. But the appearance of Lila, the estranged former member of the girls group, turns the focus to their shared history, bringing all their old antagonisms to the surfaceLilas defection to Orlandos country club school when her father came into some money, and the strange, enchanting boy she brought into their circle, who fundamentally altered dynamics that had been in play for years. By the nights end, the escalation of these long-buried issues forces them to see one another as the women they are now instead of the girls they used to be. With an uncanny eye for the raw edges of what it means to be a girl and a heartfelt sense of the intensity of early friendship, Local Girls is a look at both the profound role celebrity plays in our culture, and how the people we know as girls end up changing the course of our lives. From the Hardcover edition.

Thank God this was a short book. It was so wordy and all over the place. It reminded me of a Dare Me or something Meg Abbott would write with far less suspense and story behind it. I honestly sped through this one just to be fine with it. The characters were awful and I truly didn‘t care how it ended just that it did.

I know there are local authors, because I personally know two people who have published books (in English), I just don't know the pseudonyms they write under. Both want to protect their privacy and, since I respect that, I have never asked them for either their pseudonyms or a signed copy of their work. So I don't even know whether they are successful.

@RealLifeReading

ItsAnotherJen Have you read their books? I think it's so great you know people personally who have been published. 8y
julesG @JenFowler I might have read them, but since I don't know their "authorly names" I can only guess. I know which genres they write in and have a rough idea what they wrote about, but they are both tight lipped. And I've tried very hard. 8y
ItsAnotherJen That would drive me crazy. Maybe get them drunk?! 😁 8y
julesG @JenFowler Been there,... Which also involved getting drunk myself, twice; they don't know each other. 8y

Feel a bit blah this evening, so I figured I'd head to bed early and get some reading in. I hope everyone is having a good night tonight!

Zelma Hope you feel better soon! I have been pretty blah today as well. Litsy and some cream puffs are helping, and I just downloaded a new book for later. 8y

Mehso-so

Sigh: I wished I liked this. I didn't. This was like having a conversation with your mother in law. Sometimes there's great insight, but other times it's full of 'how you can make my son happy' repetitive preaching. Of course, I'm only joking. Anyway, I wanted to really love this and in a way I liked the ending and the theme of loss as a catalyst to a better life, but I had a hard time connecting with the girls.

Zelma 😆 the MIL conversation comparison. Nice. 8y
Notafraidofwords @Zelma lol thanks. I'm not saying that I speak from experience (wink) 8y
CynCruz23 Your description is spot on @Notafraidofwords I haven't read it but my friend has but she described as putting up with that racist older relative you have. You want to love them but you just can't look past their glaring imperfections 8y
Notafraidofwords @CynCruz23 omg that's hilarious. So spot on. 8y
Zelma @Notafraidofwords me neither. 🙄😉 8y

CherylDeFranceschi @Skiles I love the Berlin Trilogy hard! It continually takes off the top of my head with its genius! Every time. But I may love Space Oddity and Hunky Dory that much, too. 8y

Pickpick

Three 19-year-olds who have been friends their whole lives hang out in their usual bar with a movie star on the last night of his life. Narrator Maggie tells us about that night, and about how and why their friendships are unraveling. Tense narrative perfectly captures teenage cruelty.
