Wild and Crazy Guys
Wild and Crazy Guys: How the Comedy Mavericks of the '80s Changed Hollywood Forever | Nick de Semlyen
5 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
Featuring icons such as Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and Eddie Murphy, and covering films including Animal House, Caddyshack, and Ghostbusters, the behind-the-scenes story of the comedy misfits who ruled '80s Hollywood and the beloved films that made them stars Wild and Crazy Guys opens in 1978 with Chevy Chase and Bill Murray taking bad-tempered swings at each other backstage at Saturday Night Live, and closes 21 years later with the two doing a skit in the same venue, poking fun at each other, their illustrious careers, triumphs and prat falls. In between, Nick de Semlyen takes us on a trip through the tumultuous '80s, delving behind the scenes of movies such as Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, and dozens more. Chronicling the off-screen, larger-than-life antics of Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, John Belushi, et al, it's got drugs, sex, punch-ups, webbed toes, and Bill Murray being pushed into a swimming pool by Hunter S. Thompson while tied to a lawn chair. What's not to like? Based on candid interviews from many of the stars themselves, as well as those in their immediate orbit, including directors John Landis, Carl Reiner, and Amy Heckerling, Wild and Crazy Guys is a fantastic insider account of the friendships, feuds, triumphs, and disasters experienced by these iconic funnymen. Hilarious and revealing, it is both a hidden history of the most fertile period ever for screen comedy and a celebration of some of the most popular films of all time.

I can‘t remember ever reading a non-fiction book that was this funny and engaging. I had a great time reading about the exploits of Bill Murray, Steve Martin, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and Eddie Murphy. This book definitely made me want to look up some of their sketches from the early days of SNL and watch some of their movies (Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, The Three Amigos, The Jerk, Trading Places, The Blue Brothers)

OrangeMooseReads The Jerk is hilarious 5y
AsYouWish The Man with Two Brains is really good too. And have you ever seen Nothing But Trouble? (Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, John Candy and Dan Aykroyd) It is another one of my favorites!! 5y
Beatlefan129 @OrangeMooseReads The Jerk is hilarious! @AsYouWish I haven‘t seen either of those, but they‘re both mentioned in the book. Apparently “Nothing But Trouble” is the only movie Dan Akroyd ever directed 5y

OrangeMooseReads @Beatlefan129 Nothing but Trouble is great 5y
Apostcardlife Steve Martin spent 9 years writing L.A. Story and it has been my favorite movie since I first saw it. His movie Housesitter with Goldie Hawn is underrated! And of course, his John Hughes film Planes, Trains, & Automobiles, with John Candy. 💗 #fangirling 4y
Apostcardlife Oh, one more (apologies, just had my ☕️😉), All of Me, with Lily Tomlin. 4y

I grew up on 80s comedies. Steve Martin‘s SNL skits were performed by a twelve year old me in the hallways of my church for a captive audience of my peers who were less educated on comedy of years gone by. Nick de Semlyen reminded me of all the comics, skits, and movies I grew up loving in Wild and Crazy Guys, an exploration of a decade of comedy that changed everything.

This was not as funny as I was expecting it to be, much of it is down right sad, especially concerning John Belushi and John Candy. However that said, it's very entertaining and an insightful look at comedy movie making in the 80s and early 90s. It's a good 80s nostalgia fix. Curtis Armstrong (aka Booger from the Revenge of the Nerds movies) was the perfect narrator for this book 4 💥💥💥💥 out of 5.

RainyDayReading I loved Wagons East when I was a kid! Still one of my favorite movies, John Candy was great. 6y
RamsFan1963 @RainyDayReading Everyone knew John Belushi's lifestyle was going to kill him, but John Candy's death was so unexpected, dying in his sleep from a massive heart attack. So tragic, such a loss of an amazing talent. 6y
