The Woman who Went to Bed for a Year
The Woman who Went to Bed for a Year | Sue Townsend
The day her twins leave home, Eva climbs into bed and stays there. For seventeen years she's wanted to yell at the world, 'Stop! I want to get off'. Finally, this is her chance. Her husband Brian, an astronomer having an unsatisfactory affair, is upset. Who will cook his dinner? Eva, he complains, is attention seeking. But word of Eva's defiance spreads. Legions of fans, believing she is protesting, gather in the street. While Alexander the white van man brings tea, toast and sympathy. And from this odd but comforting place Eva begins to see both herself and the world very, very differently. . .

Guess I reached the point where I could start to cry. It's so sad how her mum and husband have been treating Eva 😢 It's the part where both of them are shopping the food from Eva's list. She was a smart girl, loved to live and everyone just mocked her, her dreams, her way of living and everything she did.

Picked this up at Heathrow Airport in London when we were traveling because the title intrigued me. The title turned out to be the best thing about the book, which is about a woman who hits her breaking point one day after 17 years of taking care of husband, kids and parents and decides to go to bed and stay there. 2 stars.

OrangeMooseReads That doesn‘t sound nearly as interesting as it could be. 6y

Discovered #AbbaInAugust in the nick of time! Timeless music I can relate to ;p

This #MammaMia in the tagged book finally shoves her way, following own whims 🤣🤣

RadicalReader @BookishMe I certainly wouldn‘t object to sleeping for a year because we certainly should make up or discover some serious rain checks for all the Naps we refused to take as a child 6y
BookishMe @RadicalReader absolutely... ZERO sleep debt! 😄 😄 6y

Well that was different. At first it made me laugh, but by the end it took a darker turn. Not sure how I feel about it. I will give it a pick because it did keep me reading until the end.
On a side note...I really disliked the main character‘s kids and their “friend” from University. Brats!
And that concludes my middle of the night review...got to love insomnia!

Saw this one on my way out of the library and had to get it. Loving it...I can totally relate with this woman. Just going to lie down and deciding to stay in bed....for a year! 😂

JacqMac That sounds good! Staying in bed for a year might be something that I dream about. 😂 7y
CouronneDhiver Sounds like a plan to me. Lol I‘ve never been this much of a homebody in all my life... 7y
Jaimelire @JacqMac @CouronneDhiver there really is something appealing about a year in bed! Glad I am not the only one who thinks so😂 7y

Fun comforting read, a much needed companion during the afflicted day of lethargy and more.

Quirky characters and incredulous idiosyncrasies kept me glued. While the character development was not to my liking, it was mostly a satisfying story.

This book has kept me giggling and smiling on my commute... Grateful for that!
I especially like raging outbursts without the swearing - plonkers /dingbats /pond life! Haha

I also enjoy scribbling my bookish journo entries... I'll be surprised if I can make out my own handwriting! 😅🤣😆

I needed a light funny read amidst the fabulously fascinating reads I have been busy with, and planned for.

Townsend came to mind while I was at the library earlier... Oh boy! Perfect choice... Especially when I just received work-related text to drag me away from my reading universe. I so need the laughs

Has anyone ever read Sue Townsend? I started this book last night and found myself laughing out loud a lot. Never read any books by her, but if all her books are this funny, she just earned herself another fan ☺️

BookishMe Only the Adrian Mole diaries and yes, I have fond memories of chuckling through the pages! This is the first title in the series and I need to catch up with the rest 7y
huntersmom1977 @BookishMe I just reserved the Adrian Mole series. Looking forward to it 7y

Curiouser_and_curiouser Loved Adrian Mole, I still have them on my shelf from when I was a teen and yes, I remember many LOL moments! I'd love to experience her at an adult too. 5y
huntersmom1977 @Curiouser_and_curiouser OMG!! Lol, when I first started reading this, it was like my guardian angels were watching over me. I was going through a depressive state and this book helped lift my mood immensely. Love this author!! 5y

Sadly I was a little disappointed by this book as despite reviews about its hilarity I found it pretty bland. There were some good parts but for me it all felt a bit disjointed and like the ending was rushed together.

This is definitely a book I wanted to throw across the room! I disliked almost every character in it and forced myself to hate-read it to the end! #photoadaynov16

TrishB 😀 hate read, I'm loving that statement! 8y
LeeRHarry I felt the same way, so infuriating! 8y
SealedWithInk I listened to it on audiobook format but ended up DNFing it. The characters were so annoying, especially that needy attention seeking flat mate 8y

What an interesting and strange read. Some parts were a little absurd and confusing, and it was dragged out a bit. Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quick stop at the bookstore today - look at all those beautiful German classics 😍 I've been in a little bit of a reading slump these past few days. I either feel too tired to read after a long day of work or can't focus when I do pick up a book 😕 any tips on how to beat this?

Notafraidofwords Pick up a brand new book. Something completely different. 8y
BottledBlue Try reading early in the morning. Before you start your day. Works for me♥️ 8y
