Mrs. Bridge encapsulates the ennui of a 1930‘s-40‘s upper middle class housewife in Kansas City. There are some really laugh out loud moments, like when she finds a nude magazine in her son‘s dresser drawer and thinks it can‘t be because those have been legislated against. 😂

Mrs. Bridge‘s primary concern in life is what other people will think or say. Tip: Don‘t leave home without a purse!

Tamra Don‘t expect a plot in this novel, it‘s really a series of vignettes. It is also surprising Connell does not grow the character much - Mrs. Bridge is who she is, which is a product of her time & place. (edited) 9mo

Ruthiella “What will other people think” is also definitely a concept that I was raised with. 9mo
Tamra @Ruthiella it can be a difficult attitude to overcome. It gets easier with age! 9mo
BarbaraBB Yes I did and it‘s as good! 9mo
LeahBergen Great review! I‘ve had a copy of this (and Mr) on my shelves for ages. 9mo

Completed for #AxeTheStacks & #AwesomeApril.

The title character is almost vapid but it‘s the details around her that tell the story. She is a lonely, often bored housewife in 1930s-40s Kanas City. There are occasional bright spots of comedy, particularly in her relationship with her son. But ultimately, the tone is rather sad. And I don‘t think just because times have changed that we no longer foster Mrs. Bridges in the real world.

Told in a series of vignettes, this book paints a vivid portrait of an upper-middle class, Midwestern housewife in the 1940s. It illuminates the unabashed racism and sexism of the age, the attention to petty details that sustained everyday life, and the resulting frustration and ennui of the typical housewife of that time. I will be moving on to the second book in the series for sure. 4⭐️ #hoopla

This was either utterly pointless or the most brilliant book I‘ve read all year. Still not sure which it is.

I read this after a mention in a piece on Meg Wolitzer in NY mag, and I was not disappointed. Despite living a very different life than this WWII era housewife, many of the stories about her interactions with her son we were relatable and hilarious. The quiet desperation of this woman was heartbreaking, and I felt the vignette about the tornado at the country club was incredibly poignant. Excited to explore more from this author.

WOW. I picked this up after Meg Wolitzer recommended it in the NYT and it‘s incredible. A sweet, wistful, sometimes sad novel that is also a sharp social commentary. It reminded me of a few women in my family. Now I‘m off to pick up the sequel, Mr. Bridge.

I was inspired to read Mrs. Bridge by a recent article in The NY Times by Meg Wolitzer. So far, so good!

Mrs Bridge is a wife, a mother of three, well-to-do (thanks to her ever hard working husband) and living in Kansas City. In 71 beautiful short chapters her life is recorded. All chapters mainly consist of her contacts with others - her husband, children, neighbours. She doesn't judge others but is hard on herself.
Without ever getting enotional, the book touched me deeply. Read it slowly but do read it! #favourite
