No Talking | Andrew Clements
8 posts | 16 read | 11 to read
In No Talking, Andrew Clements portrays a battle of wills between some spunky kids and a creative teacher with the perfect pitch for elementary school life that made Frindle an instant classic. Its boys vs. girls when the noisiest, most talkative, and most competitive fifth graders in history challenge one another to see who can go longer without talking. Teachers and school administrators are in an uproar, until an innovative teacher sees how the kids experiment can provide a terrific and unique lesson in communication.

Can the entire infamous 5th grade at Laketon Elementary School stay quiet for 48 hours? Lessons in cooperation, respect, and communication abound in this book. Clements does well in using Gandhi‘s silence as an agent to change and making the lessons understandable for kids. This is a recognized PA School Librarian‘s Association Young Readers Choice Award winner, for the 2008-2009 school year. #BBRC #YourStateAwardWinner

The fifth-grade girls and boys at Laketon Elementary don't get along very well. But the real problem is that these kids are loud and disorderly.

Then one day Dave, a certified loudmouth, bumps into an idea -- a big one that makes him try to keep quiet for a whole day. It quickly becomes@a contest. Which team can say the fewest words during two whole days? And it's the boys against the girls.

There are so many ways to communicate. Is talking overrated? The kids in my daughters class, as they read this book with me, practiced not talking or only using three words at a time. I think it made them more thoughtful when choosing their words. Cute, fast and easy.

#battleofthesexes and this challenge is almost complete. Just tomorrow to go. 🤓. bTW LOVE this BOOK. The kids decide who can go the longest without talking. Even the story game they play is awesome. Read it. You deserve it.

jmtrivera I read this to a class I had once and they decided to play that game all day. It was amazing! I love this author! 7y

I have read a LOT of Andrew Clements. But this is by far my absolutely favorite. I give it to all new teachers I know their first year, and if I am lucky enough to work with kids book clubs, I do this book every time.

jmtrivera Frindle is my favorite, but I love this one too. Read it to a class once and they actually did this - just because! 8y
LibrarianRyan @jmtrivera that would be awesome. 🤓 8y

I'm an introverted teacher. When I get home after 8 hours of teaching, all I want us to sit in the quiet and read. My hubs comes home an hour later and wants to chat all night. #booknerdproblems #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

Dear husband and sons ... I love you, but this is the first time I've had a moment to read all day. 🤐

That-Bookish-Hiker I'm always getting interrupted while I wait for my train during the work week. I guess headphones and a book says "I want a conversation." Lol 8y
britt_brooke @That-Bookish-Hiker People are so clueless! 8y
GlitteryOtters Ugh same! Only for me it is my husband, our housemate AND all 3 dogs trying to interrupt! Good luck getting some reading time in. 8y

TheNextBook Or @That-Bookish-Hiker they read the blog "how to talk to a girl wearing headphones" It's written by a guy who thinks he is a relationship expert so he told men it's okay to disrupt a woman who seems content wearing headphones...? if I have a book, leave me alone. 8y
TheLondonBookworm Hahaha I definitely know that feeling! 8y
britt_brooke @GlitteryOtters Hubby is the worst one today, haha! 8y
That-Bookish-Hiker @TheNextBook what?! There is actually someone with a blog about hat?! That's crazy! 8y

Zelma 😂 I don't get too upset since he puts up with me interrupting his tv shows. 😳 8y
britt_brooke @Zelma I'm not too upset since he is cooking me dinner right now. 🙌🏻 #spoiled 8y
Floresj So true!!!! I can't tell you how many times this conversation has happened at my home: husband: "What do you want to do now?" Me: "I AM doing something now....I'm reading." 8y
britt_brooke @Floresj Right?!!! 😁😁😁 8y
MemoirsForMe 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 8y
That-Bookish-Hiker @TheNextBook there is so many things wrong with that article and it's was lovely how he put quotes from women who support it 🙄. I especially love the part where he says a majority of women are nice and friendly so it's ok to stand there and start a conversation despite the headphone. Yeesh that guys is delusional. 8y
