Lawyer Rob Sutherland's literary genius of a younger brother has the ability to "read out" or summon characters from the books he's reading. One such character, Uriah Heep, warns him that a rival summoner is afoot, determined to create a new world that threatens reality.
We have a heroine straight out of Famous Five, several Mr. Darcys, Heathcliff, Sherlock Holmes, Dorian Gray and a number of Dickensian figures. Fun.

A fun story with a cool premise! Charley is a summoner who can read characters out of books. He tries to control his ability until he finds himself the target of a mysterious villain who is also a summoner. It's an adventure, a love letter to literature readers, and a story about what constitutes family. The downside - it could have stood serious editing! A good 100 pgs could have been cut with nothing substantial lost. Still, I enjoyed it a lot!

I picked this up because someone or some site compared it to Mr. Penumbras 24 hour bookstore which I really loved. This book started with that same sense of fun. When it got to all the mythical battles I was bored but slogged on wanting to know what happened. I did enjoy the end. But the first 100 pages or so were the best for me, then the last 20 or so.

Who doesn‘t love a book with books on the cover?!? The story sounds fun too, but this cover caught my attention.

Fantastic read! I didn't know it, but Charley is exactly the hero I needed! I loved that he is exceptionally gifted with words, a phD in English Literature, not an action hero or scientist. His gift is to be able to read characters out of books and it gets him into all sorts of trouble, expecially when he asks his brother for help.
The setting in today's Wellington is also very refreshing.

All in all: 5/5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Robert‘s brother Charlie has a unique ability. He can read things and people out of books & make them real. What happens when someone else can do the same thing? If you guessed literary shenanigans in Wellington, New Zealand, cookie for you.

This was an absolute delight! Literary references by the dozen, family secrets, an intriguing mystery I only guessed part of, gorgeous NZ setting, & 5 Mr Darcys. I need to buy a copy now to share! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

So I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of literary characters running amok in Wellington, NZ! It may not work for everyone but I loved the literary aspect of this and the sly humour as well as the complicated sibling relationship that lay at the heart of it all. Really enjoyed this clever literary adventure that brings a lot of classic canon characters to life. Refreshing that the central relationship is a sibling one rather than a romance.

Starting a new book today! 💕📚 Also enjoying some holiday cheese (it has cranberries!) and pastries! 😋🧀🥐 It's rainy and cold outside, which makes for an even cozier reading day!

This is certainly a book for book lovers to read. Recognizing famous characters and seeing how they might be outside the pages of their books was part of the fun in reading this.

It was nice to see a sibling relationship at the forefront of an adult fantasy. There's an interesting question posed in the reading guide as to whose story this really is, considering whose perspective we get throughout the book. Analyzing that is also part of the fun.

I finally finished the Paper Girls series. I finally read The Blue Castle by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I loved The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep! I managed my 1 Brandon Sanderson a month goal reading Starsight.

On to March!

I am feeling a bit blah right now. Weather blues, I think.

I would like to finish The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep on audio, finish A Lesson in Secrets, and finish Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

For graphic novels, I want to concentrate on the Paper Girls series.

No pressure week!

This was a very clever, intricately written book. HG Parry sure did her homework! It‘s a book about books! You‘d be doing yourself a favor by brushing up on Victorian literature before reading this book (Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc). I felt a bit uninformed at times, not recognizing the names of many of the characters. Otherwise, this was a very imaginative read. I think one of my next book might be David Copperfied.

I went into this book with little to no knowledge of Charles Dickens‘ work but it doesn‘t matter. The author weaves such an engaging tale that kept me riveted until the very end. I highly recommend this one!

Happy February!! I couldn't resist sharing this little compilation of the 25 books I read during January 2020. Way more than expected as I didn't manage to read as much in the last two weeks or so... Although it does include a DNF and a lot of shorter reads. I had a total of FIVE new 5 star reads, which I don't think ever happened before. A new record! I also had a few more nearly perfect ratings too. 🥳

Someone else has Charley‘s talent and Rob and Charley need to put an end to nefarious plans and get various characters back in their books…

Along the way we meet Dorian Grey, Sherlock and so many more characters from classic literature. I loved their interactions and it really appealed to the book nerd in me.

I don‘t care what everyone says, damaging books is worse than damaging people. People heal up. Books never do. The marks always show.

Told from the perspective of a lawyer whose brother can pull fictional characters from the pages of books into the real world, this book was so much fun for a literature lover. I adored the book analyses and seeing what Victorian characters would do in modern situations. The Heathcliff personification was priceless.

#24B42020 #readathon progress so far. I finished my second book today and I am deep into the Uriah Heep book, which I am loving. If you like Victorian literature, I recommend it. If you hate Dickens like @Trashcanman does, then I'd skip this one. 😂

Highly enjoyable! What might happen if fictional characters could be “read” into life? We all have our own versions of those characters—some positive, some not so. How would the characters feel about being alive? What if one of them wanted to take over the world?

Imaginative, clever, fun, but way too dialogue-y. Characters a bit shallowly drawn. But a good read.

I‘m busy. There are a lot of books to read.

Picture from a walk earlier this week - the leaves are getting way prettier now. Still reading and enjoying the tagged book but life has been continuing to feel super hard and I‘m not finishing books really (except the last Paper Girls on my phone). But my phone informs me that my steps are up from last week, overall up from last year at this time, and if I can just stop crying randomly... 😕 I think I need a vacation.

Reading this with Edie (and really enjoying it despite never having read any Dickens!) It‘s been a weird weekend after a rough week so I made beef stew and oatmeal bread for dinner (comfort food) and took it really easy today. The cats approve of turning the heat on so early in the season, too!!

Rob‘s younger brother is able to read things out of books and into the real world. It is startling enough when it is a paperweight but when the Cat in the Hat is suddenly in your house it is even more alarming. When the two discover that there are characters in the world that Charles did not read out, they know something is amiss. This book was an absolute delight full of adventure, the love of literature, and a world with more than one Darcy.

August wrap up (I also got about 70% through Fleishman is in Trouble & 40% through the Fiery Cross).

Favorites: the Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep & Stay Sexy and Dont Get Murdered.

Least favorites: The Gone Dead & The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

An absolute delight from start to finish! A fun, satisfying read 🥰

If you like any of these things, you‘ll probably like this book: Charles Dickens, Sherlock Holmes, books about books, books where the characters in books are real, well crafted fiction, original plot, great pacing, interesting characters, plots with lots of twists and turns, family tension, humor, literary criticism critique, adventure, allusions, Dorian Gray, and more!

Hello, new followers! I'm sure a lot of you follow tons of people and haven't noticed, but I dont post frequently, and on top of that I've been having some trouble sticking to anything lately. In fact, I've only finished two prose books since 24 in 48. But you can see here what I'm reading now, and hopefully I'll finish it.
