That sure was a book I listened to. I don‘t really have anything to say about it. I was so excited to read this because of the premise but then the book as a whole just didn‘t do anything for me. It held my interest enough that I got through it but that‘s about it.

Starting this one, it has a very 'Bioshock' vibe. Looks really cool and sounds like a page turner!

We aren‘t untethered from existence. The universe still acknowledges us, wraps us in it‘s glittering, expanding embrace. The moon still tugs away. The sun rises and sets as ever, sustaining us even now. They didn‘t abandon us down here. We abandoned ourselves. But enough.

Oh my gosh. I was expecting a fun race sort of book, but what I got was so much better. A lying government? Mysterious beings? Fear induced sickness? Unlawful arrest - though the secret police said it was for the better good. This world seems so real, like it will become our future if we don‘t stop trying to hold up the past. We need to look to the future, not letting fear hold us down. Love both Leyla and Ari‘s growth so much-one hope, one fear

“So you see, all this time the government has been lying to us. Can you believe that? They‘re meant to look out for us. They are meant to serve us.” Ari nods, his expression suddenly studious. “We should always question everything,” he says quietly, his eyes burning into me, “everything, Leyla.”

The waters can‘t halt human connections. The desire-the sheer will, to reach out, to anchor one another, it too stellar. People will always find a way to keep from losing one another- from losing themselves. The human spirit didn‘t drown. It was swept up and carried along; it flows still, the stream coursing its way through everyone‘s lives.

I'm terrified of deep ocean, but this cover and the premise of a female submersible racer caught my attention. I hope it doesn't terrify me too bad! 😬😬

LauraBrook I‘m terrified of deep water as well, but this sounds really good. #stacked 5y
mangokittty I just finished it and I really enjoyed it! It was less scary than I thought, but the idea of the fear was there if that makes sense? I'm definitely going to read the second one whenever it comes out. 5y

"?????'? ???? ???? ????? ?? ??????? ????."⁣

London Shah creates an immersive, underwater world that feels real, and imminent, right from the start of the book. I was afraid this would be another mediocre SFF read but I was wrong, and extremely pleased. The characters have a real depth to them and a goal you can sympathize with. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series one day.

I‘ve been remiss in posting about The Light at the Bottom of the World. Loved this book! London Shah has created something special with this story. The setting is great, the plot is well-constructed, and the characters are authentic. The subject matter is timely, and while Shah gets a little heavy-handed with it, I think she balances it well. There‘s also a cliffhanger at the end that feels unnecessary, but it‘s an obvious setup for the next book.

Nute I really like the title. The pull of the story starts there for me! 5y
BillBlume @Nute I enjoyed the book a lot. Shah really won me over as a reader with that book. If you read it, I hope you‘ll enjoy it, too. 5y

Loving the buildup to the race and the character of Leyla. London Shah has done an excellent job with The Light at the Bottom of the World, introducing this submerged world and all its many dangers and stakes. Just a really well done book, so far. She also scored points with me by sneaking in a reference to London by its older name of Londinium.

The world has flooded and London now lies beneath the sea. Our MC Leyla McQueen is a submersible racer whose father has been taken by the Blackwatch. Leyla sets out to find and rescue him. Problem is, in doing so she's stumbled upon a massive state secret which threatens to upend her entire world. Battling human engineered Anthropoids, government thugs, and the dark abyss of the ocean itself, Leyla has quite the road ahead. Fun new YA series.

Leyla lives in the depths of the ocean: London. After rising sea levels flooded the Earth, humanity was forced to adapt. Submersible racing and Anthropoid attacks are all Leyla has ever known. But as she searches for answers about her father--arrested on false charges--she begins to realize the government has been lying to them about almost everything. A bit predictable at times, but a fun, imaginative YA sci-fi novel.

Okay so I was expecting the submarine race to be a lot more of this book but it's done like in the first 1/3. I didn't realize how much government conspiracy was going to be in this. Lots of elements that I enjoy. The mc was really likable and strong and not a stupid damsel. I loved that the conflict with the world pulls in some things from climate change, the discussion about mental health and that its own voices.

This cover intrigues me enough to want to read this book. London underwater??? Has it sank? Is this a mirror world? I want to know. I do wish the title was not so squished and it was easier to read from a distance. or from a small image (like your phone).
