Vampires have always lived in Eastern Europe. But with the fall of the Soviet Union, they began to spread across the continent, then the world, turning whole populations into vampires--or human cattle. Having overrun India, the far East, and the great cities of North and South America, the forces of Night are now spreading into the countryside to consolidate their conquest. In a town on the New Jersey shore, the vampires have just arrived, along with their human henchmen, the cowboys, who round up human cattle for the overlords in return for the promise of eternal life---later. For the vampires wish only a few of their own kind to rule, and feed. The rest of humanity are to be helpless herds, the source of the blood of life. Falsely accused of abuse, Father Dan is drunk in a basement waiting for the end. His superior has betrayed the local Catholic congregation and become a vampire. Sister Carolyn has become a formidable killer of cowboys and vampires. Dan's niece, escaped from the conquest of New York, has made her way south to find him. Brought together by Rabbi Zev Wolpin, who is shaken by the vampires' fear of the cross and holy water, they plan their resistance. Against all odds, they discover that there just might be a way for humanity to really fight back. But first they will have to kill the vampire king of New York.

This committed the mortal sin of not being half as clever as it thought it was 😬 if you‘re gonna open with a prologue about how no one else does vampires in an interesting way, I really expect you to come up with something better than completely unexamined themes, a Mary Sue priest MC, a lot of gratuitous sexual assault but no actual scares or scary atmosphere, and completely unprompted Islamophobia and antisemitism

A priest, a rabbi, a nun, and an atheist lesbian walk into a.... fantastic book. I thought it was the inspiration for the Netflix series of the same name, but it's not. An excellent old school vampire story. Reminiscent of OG Stephen King. The first half was perfection, the second half was good.

I listened to this on Audible. The narrator was FANTASTIC- one of the best I‘ve heard. The book, however, is a different story. The 1st part was great- the plot & characters kept me going. Super heavy on Catholicism, but had an amazing Rabbi character. The second half felt like it was an excuse to be misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, and when they got to NYC SUPER islamophobic. There‘s also a graphic gangr*pe not imperative to the plot. 2.25/5

Lin3han I also read this because I loved the show. It is literally NOTHING like it so don‘t even bother to give it a try 2y

I did watch all 7 episodes of Midnight Mass on Netflix while settling bub the last ten days so that‘s an extra 35pts for #TeamSlaughter in #Scarathlon2021

Clwojick This looks so creepy! 3y
Lizpixie @Clwojick it is, I very much enjoyed it. It‘s like a cross between The Exorcist with its religious overtones and Salem‘s Lot. 3y

Finally watched all 7 episodes of Midnight Mass on Netflix. While I did enjoy it I definitely don‘t think it was as good as The Haunting of Hill house or The Haunting of Bly Manor (same director and lots of the same actors). Still enjoyable though! 36 points for #teamslaughter #scarathlon2021

This is definitely challenging because I can't resist vampire anything and there are SO many great books and movies out there but I'll give it a go.
1. It's a two way tie between the tagged book and Salem's Lot
2. Interview with the Vampire & John Carpenters Vampires
3. 📚Let the Right one in by John Ajvide Lindqvist
🎬 Bram Stokers Dracula
@TheNeverendingTBR #spookysaturday

KathyWheeler I love Let the Right One In! 4y
Reggie I have not heard of Midnight Mass, thanks! 4y
TheNeverendingTBR Stacked! 📚 I agree with John Carpenter's Vampires, that was excellent! Thanks for playing along! 🧛‍♀️ 4y
HeathHof @KathyWheeler I did too! Definitely preferred the book over the movie though. @Reggie if you get a chance to read it, let me know what you think! @TheNeverendingTBR Thanks for hosting! Looking forward to more #spookysaturdays 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received this book as a Christmas gift from my brother years ago. It is entertaining and scary as hell. Still read it every year about Christmastime. This was written when Vampires were still terrifying monsters before the Douche Vamp culture was born.

winemom "Douche Vamp culture" omg, yes. You put it into words. ? 9y
