Syria's Secret Library
Syria's Secret Library: Reading and Redemption in a Town Under Siege | Mike Thomson
6 posts | 4 read | 24 to read
The remarkable, improbable story of a small, makeshift library in the Syrian town of Darayya, and the people who found hope and humanity in its books during the four-year siege they endured. At the height of the Syrian Civil War, deep beneath the shattered streets of rebel-held Darayya was a secret library. This basement room filled with thousands of books, rescued under constant sniper fire from gutted buildings, was an oasis of normality in a country at war with itself. Here, despite a devastating four-year siege, people risked their lives to read. Over a period of more than a year, Mike Thomson heard their extraordinary stories via tenuous Skype calls, emails, social media messages and audio diaries recorded on their mobile phones. Through the testaments of these clandestine readers, a portrait of a unique rebel enclave emerges, and with it, a richer understanding of their embattled country. Syria's rich literary history has been overshadowed by recent turmoil. But Darayya's hidden collection is a testament to the Syrian people's long, unbreakable pursuit of knowledge, enlightenment and beauty, even in their darkest hours. When Darayya fell in the summer of 2016, it was the end of the secret library but not the courageous spirit of those who built it. This is a story of hope amid the despair, a glimmer of light in a country long cloaked in darkness.

Syria‘s Secret Library is about the power of books, literature, education, and art to give people hope and purpose. It also describes the conflict in Syria and the effects it‘s had on residents, especially in Darayya. It‘s amazing that the author never visited the library because he describes it so vividly, thanks to the information received online from his contacts there.

Admittedly, I‘m not fully abreast of the tragedies taking place in Syria. This is a book that delves into those who face daily horrors living in a community under siege, and how those individuals find hope and perseverance while starving and facing death. Thomson interviews those who started a secret library. It‘s inspiring, though parts of this telling are graphic. I recommend this. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Cinfhen That‘s a powerful visual on the cover. Book sounds difficult to read but also very important. Thanks for sharing and posting 💙 5y

Hoping to finish this up soon, but #Xander is proving to be a fun distraction. I‘m teaching him early the importance of posing with books, as well as the joy of reading. #catsoflitsy

About the book: this goes beyond a secret library to discuss how people in horrible and tragic circumstances can find hope. An important read!

I‘m only on page 3, but this quote just took my breath away.

“Everyone is told to reveal its location only to those they trust. Otherwise...planes will destroy it. That, the teenager tells me...‘would be the end of hope for us all.‘”

This book about the siege of Daraya (outside of Damascus) and the secret library was the most inspiring books I‘ve read this year. It has so much pain and destruction, yet the BBC reporting of the founders of the underground library was so hopeful. Reading about how the citizens of Daraya banded together to endure a 4 year siege, establish schools, and cultivated knowledge, reinforced the belief that knowledge is resistance to oppression.
