No Flying in the House (Turtleback School & Library)
No Flying in the House (Turtleback School & Library) | Betty Brock
11 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
Most little girls have parents to take care of them, but not Annabel Tippens. She has Gloria, a tiny white dog who talks and wears a gold collar. Annabel never thought it was strange that she had Gloria instead of real parents. Until one day a wicked, wicked cat named Belinda comes to tell her the truth -- she's not just a little girl, she's a half-fairy!And she can do lots of things that other kids can't do, such as kiss her own elbow and fly around the house. But being a fairy isn't all fun and games, and soon Annabel must make a choice. If she chooses to be a fairy, she'll have to say good-bye to Gloria forever. How can she decide between her newly found magic and her dearest friend?

Last month my dad brought 7 boxes of my old books to our new house, and I spent time unpacking them and deciding what to keep. For my #readathon today I‘m revisiting some of my favorite forgotten books from my childhood - ones that I haven‘t opened since I was young, starting with No Flying in the House by Betty Brock. (I‘ve re-read many books from my childhood before - Little House, Anne of Green Gables, etc. Today I‘m focusing on the others.)

Last bit of #bookmail for this week/month! If you‘re wanting a copy, it was $1.99 on Amazon Prime.

#kidlit

catebutler I read this a couple of years ago, very cute! 7y
Lola This was my absolute favorite as a kid. I spent a lot of time trying to kiss my elbow and watching for little china animals to come to life 😍 7y
EvieBee @catebutler I‘m so glad! I‘ve been wanting to read it for sometime now. 7y
EvieBee @Lola Ah! Lol! I actually broke my elbow when I was 5 attempting to fly so this sounded right up my alley. 7y

After kind of a junk day-having the blahs & a headache, I was excited to get this lovely #bookmail from @BarbaraJean who after seeing a comment that I was looking for the original cover of this childhood favorite book, offered to send me one of the two she had. The kindness of Littens!❤️The treasured book came with a note & a bookmark from her wedding. (I need bookish friends with fun wedding favors!)😆Thank you so much Barbara--you made my day!😘

merelybookish So sweet! Littens are the best! 7y

Jinjer OMGGGGGG!!!! This was a childhood favorite of mine and I couldn‘t remember the title and did all kinds of Internet plot searches until I found it and then grabbed one off eBay several years back. Now if I could just get the title of sisters who go to camp and there‘s an adventure to find the lady of the loons... So glad someone had a copy for you!!!! 7y
BarbaraJean You are so welcome! I‘m sorry you had a junk day, but glad this arrived just at the right time to brighten it! Hope today is better. 😊💗📚 7y

#FierceFeb #GirlsJustWannaHaveFun Another favorite childhood book I had forgotten about until @Laalaleighh posted about it several months ago. I kept an eye out at the library bookstore & snagged a 25 cent copy. The cover is like the lower left so I still want to find the edition I had on the upper right. I was fascinated by Annabel & her tiny talking dog, Gloria & that Annabel is half-fairy & learns to fly which sounded like so much fun to me.💕

Cinfhen I don‘t remember this one...but looks like a sweet, fun read💕 7y
LeahBergen I would‘ve loved this as a kid. How did I miss it?? 7y
AWahle I love this story! Will keep an eye out for the old cover. I have a copy and understand the love for the cover you originally read the book with. 7y

BarbaraJean Ohhhh... I loved this one, too! And I actually have two copies of the edition with the old cover—they‘re both old paperbacks and not in pristine condition or anything, but if you‘d like to have one of them, I‘d love to send you my duplicate copy! Just let me know. 😊 7y
batsy I don't know this one and that certainly looks like she's having fun! :) Hope you're able to find a copy with the sweet older cover. 7y
Laalaleighh Ah I love this so much!!! 7y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen @LeahBergen @batsy It's such a sweet and fun children's book. 📚💕 @AWahle Thank you! Such a fun story. 😆👍 @Laalaleighh Thank you for reminding me about it! 😆💜 7y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraJean Oh wow! That is so nice of you. 🤗💜I would love to have it. Can I trade you for it or send something in return? 7y
Cinfhen That soooo awesome @BarbaraJean ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ 7y
BarbaraJean No need unless you want to! Call it a get well gift. 😊 I‘m not sure when I acquired the second copy, and I haven‘t wanted to just donate it to a library sale or used book store. I‘d love to be able to give it to someone who loves the book! Email me your info at barbarajanettewood@gmail.com and I‘ll send it your way! 7y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraJean You are so sweet. I will email you with my address. Thank you! 💕🤗💕 7y

This F novel by Betty Brock about a young girl who finds out she can fly is my favorite children‘s literature novel of all time! I would use it as an IR book in my classroom. Tie it in to science with these lessons on flying!

#eclecticreadathon I think this counts as joke for adults in a children's book. It certainly made me laugh in agreement haha.

#ERMadlibs verb book, attempt to check off #eclecticreadathon 's children's book scavenger hunt item.

I loved this book as a kid and then spent half my life trying to find its title so I could read it again.

DebinHawaii Oh my gosh! I loved this book so much as a child and I completely forgot about it until now! Thank you for that trip down memory lane! 💜💜💜 7y
Laalaleighh @DebinHawaii you're welcome! My teacher read it in first grade and then I spent years looking for "the fairy book with an emerald cat and the girl who could kiss her elbow". 7y

Pickpick

Not quite how I remembered it. Yes there was an evil cat with jeweled eyes, but as I started to read it I remembered the thing that upset me the most (no spoilers). It still makes me sad. Overall though, I'm glad I reread it and I do remember trying to kiss my elbow and being disappointed that I couldn't do it! Still can't, alas.

The edition in the left is the one I just dug out of my TBR; the one in the right is the edition I had as a kid. I bought the current edition a few years ago because I remembered being freaked the hell out by the book (something about a cat with jeweled eyes). So not necessarily a #favouritechildrensbook, but one I think I will now go reread to see if my memory is right! #riotgrams

Wanted something comforting to read as I fall asleep tonight. Decided to go with these two faves from when I was a little girl. It's like a reading security blanket and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Hopefully by the time I finish these, my sleepy-time tea will have kicked in and I can sleep. Have a lovely night, Littens. 💙💙💙

MrBook I made @BookBabe and me loose-leafed chamomile lemon with honey tonight 😊👍🏻. 8y

Lola One of my favorite books EVER!!! Oh, the hours I spent trying to kiss my elbows...😛 8y
akfreeborn If I had to pick only two books from my childhood, these would be the two I would pick. Thanks for the post! I think I will read them again. 8y
Laalaleighh @MrBook it's the best, isn't it?? ☕️@dragon I know this is a late response but thank you!! 😊 @teainthelibrary I had this gorgeous illustrated copy as a kid! I was obsessed! @lola you and I are kindred spirits. I think that book started my love of everything - faeries, fantasy, the idea I might secretly be a fairy princess in disguise 👸🏼 I got so close to kissing my elbows, never made it. 8y
Laalaleighh @akfreeborn 😊😊😊 they're the best! I had no idea so many people also read them! Enjoy the reread!!! 8y

Two generations, on book! My mother and daughter are completely engrossed in the adventures of Annabel Tippins, an ordinary girl who turns out to be half fairy. A wry, dreamy perfect read for my second grader.
