Why I Write
Why I Write | George Orwell
21 posts | 21 read | 28 to read
Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization, and helped make us who we are.

“I have not written a novel for seven years, but I hope to write another fairly soon. It is bound to be a failure...”

His next novel was 1984.

Personally speaking, it gets too much after a certain point. Some aspects and parts of the book are good and relatable but it mostly is a book of moaning!

RaimeyGallant Nice review. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you're interested. :)

"Patriotism is usually stronger than class-hatred, and always stronger than any kind of internationalism"

I'm not sure what I think about that, Orwell writes about how the whole of England came together to fight in the war despite internal divisions. It's interesting how some of what he says can be applied to current goings on. It's sad to think that it takes the horrors of war to unite people.

So behind on my reading but enjoying it when I can

Just to show my ignorance I had thought that "Stormtrooper" was an invention by George Lucas and not an actual designation for a specialized group of German soldiers ? I need to read more history.

The_Old_Astronomer Don't worry about it. I grew up watching Star Wars and I just learned that storm troopers were a real thing a few years ago 8y

[DELETED] 3323341091 groovy! Orwell is one of my favorites. that be a tasty beer 🙂 8y
Faibka @fern I'm seriously loving that man, I'm ashamed to say I've only read Animal Farm but it was enough to recognize his genius, so insightful and witty, can't wait to read 1984 and his other works. And yes the beer was good 😁 8y

Tsubame I haven't read Orwell yet, but I saw 1984 as a play once, it was really intense! 8y
Faibka @Tsubame Cool! I've only read Animal Farm and it was fantastic. In this essay he explains how living in tumultuous times made him write with a concern for society and to expose injustices. I think intense is a perfect word to describe both his writing and him as a person 😬 8y

It wasn't what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it - and the last essay made me giggle aloud on the train. I admit that I was hoping it would rejuvenate the writing urge in me. It didn't do that, but it did renew my desire to keep fighting politically.

Whether puncturing the lies of politicians or telling unpalatable truths about wars, Orwell's uncompromising essays are more relevant and essential than ever in today's era of spin.

This is only of the essays that was a treat to read.
