Have you ever wondered what happens after the final girl escapes the backwards hillbilly clan. Kin is that book. There is still plenty of blood and guts and in between them are plenty of interesting and well written characters. My favorite scene in here is where a father of a boy who was killed asks the final girl in her hospital bed if his boy at least went down fighting. She says yes. But then it shows her memory and how the boy took off👇🏼

The middle section was a bit slow. More of getting to know the characters rather than any real action. Parts 1 and 3 had lots of violence and some pretty disturbing scenes. The story was most interesting when focusing on the Merrill clan. They are terrifying psychopathic cannibals who are remorseless killing machines.
so-soI'd never thought I'd say this, but I actually prefer Burkes short stories. They have more atmosphere, more feeling for what scares us and makes us feel uncomfortable.
This book mainly works with blood and the ick factor. Not that I mind, the book entertained me and I've had my share of suspense. But the stories are more of what I'm relly looking for in the horror genre.

so-soThis falls between so-so and pick for me. His writing style is verbose to a point where it obfuscates and distracts from the story he is trying to tell (which is genuinely interesting.) I wish my library had loanable copies of his work, so I wasn‘t risking my own $. Have you read anything of his? What do you recommend I try next?

I'm not a squeamish person, but there was some really brutal stuff in here. Show me monsters, ghosts, ghouls, and I'll laugh at them all. Show me true human horror and I'm gonna need somewhere to hide! Fast paced, terrifying, unflinchingly brutal, a must for horror fans!

Man this is fucked up. If you're a horror fan that can do a gory, Deliverance kind of thing, take a look. It *starts* with all cylinders firing.

I picked Kealen Patrick Burke because he is a local horror author and he has some good books out there in the horror world I've read Blanky a novella and it was pretty creepy . Here are a few others I have of his I'm most excited to read KIN it sounds pretty twisted and I like dark and freaky lol.

pickIt would have been so easy to take the premise for this story and make it a torture-porn gorefest with one-dimensional characters. Instead, Burke has written a horror novel about a bloodthirsty family and those who seek revenge against them, and made it touching and full of well-defined characters. It‘s a great horror novel.
pickWOW. A girl having escaped the local serial killer hillbilly family sets off a chain of events. What I was not expecting were the lessons on loss and how grief can come and sit on your chest until it burrows its way inside you where it can do all kinds of ugly things. This is easily top 5 for me so far this year. Just great in a sad, sad, way.
Earlier in the day, this man and his simple minded son, Pete, had picked up a girl who had escaped the killer hillbillies from down the road. They took her to the town doc but now wait the punishment for meddling in private affairs. I wasn‘t expecting a lot from this, but the writing is pretty decent. I actually care for a lot of the people in here. Even one of the hillbillies.

pickOne of the best horror novels I‘ve read in a while but it ended a chapter too early. I felt like some of the character arcs were unresolved.
