On a hot summer day in Elkwood, Alabama, Claire Lambert staggers naked, wounded, and half-blind away from the nightmare that claimed her friends and left her the sole survivor. Even as she prays for rescue, the killers (a family of cannibalistic lunatics) are closing in. A soldier returns from Iraq to be told his brother was among those murdered. A waitress, trapped in an abusive relationship gets an unexpected visit that sends her back on the road to a past she has spent years trying to outrun. Together a dream of vengeance will be realized as grief and rage turn good people into cold-blooded murderers and force alliances among strangers.

A gruesome, Texas chainsaw massacre style story. All the trigger warnings. The ending wasn't quite as satisfying as I would have liked but still good.

Bookzombie I love your book sleeve!! 2y

Have you ever wondered what happens after the final girl escapes the backwards hillbilly clan. Kin is that book. There is still plenty of blood and guts and in between them are plenty of interesting and well written characters. My favorite scene in here is where a father of a boy who was killed asks the final girl in her hospital bed if his boy at least went down fighting. She says yes. But then it shows her memory and how the boy took off👇🏼

Reggie running without a backward glance once he saw them in trouble. She was being kind. Anyways, great book. #21DaysofHorror Day 6. 3y

The final section of the book was 5 star amazing. There is an epic confrontation and a satisfying ending
The middle section was a bit slow. More of getting to know the characters rather than any real action. Parts 1 and 3 had lots of violence and some pretty disturbing scenes. The story was most interesting when focusing on the Merrill clan. They are terrifying psychopathic cannibals who are remorseless killing machines.

Reggie I LOVED this book. He has a real nice writing style. 4y

I'd never thought I'd say this, but I actually prefer Burkes short stories. They have more atmosphere, more feeling for what scares us and makes us feel uncomfortable.

This book mainly works with blood and the ick factor. Not that I mind, the book entertained me and I've had my share of suspense. But the stories are more of what I'm relly looking for in the horror genre.

This falls between so-so and pick for me. His writing style is verbose to a point where it obfuscates and distracts from the story he is trying to tell (which is genuinely interesting.) I wish my library had loanable copies of his work, so I wasn‘t risking my own $. Have you read anything of his? What do you recommend I try next?

Godpants @LauraJ overall I enjoyed it. I‘ll definitely check out other work of his. 6y

Nope, I am not ok!! I really enjoyed this book but holy crap was it grim!!
I'm not a squeamish person, but there was some really brutal stuff in here. Show me monsters, ghosts, ghouls, and I'll laugh at them all. Show me true human horror and I'm gonna need somewhere to hide! Fast paced, terrifying, unflinchingly brutal, a must for horror fans!

Great horror book of the backwoods terror variety. Gory so proceed with caution.

Man this is fucked up. If you're a horror fan that can do a gory, Deliverance kind of thing, take a look. It *starts* with all cylinders firing.

#agameoffavorites tag today is local author

I picked Kealen Patrick Burke because he is a local horror author and he has some good books out there in the horror world I've read Blanky a novella and it was pretty creepy . Here are a few others I have of his I'm most excited to read KIN it sounds pretty twisted and I like dark and freaky lol.

It would have been so easy to take the premise for this story and make it a torture-porn gorefest with one-dimensional characters. Instead, Burke has written a horror novel about a bloodthirsty family and those who seek revenge against them, and made it touching and full of well-defined characters. It‘s a great horror novel.

Reggie Yes!!!!!!!!!! I finished this last week and felt the same way. 6y

WOW. A girl having escaped the local serial killer hillbilly family sets off a chain of events. What I was not expecting were the lessons on loss and how grief can come and sit on your chest until it burrows its way inside you where it can do all kinds of ugly things. This is easily top 5 for me so far this year. Just great in a sad, sad, way.

Reviewsbylola Your review makes me want to read this! 6y
night_shift Is this a full length novel? Because I just read one of his novellas and it was way too short for me and I didn't love it :/ 6y
Reggie @Reviewsbylola Give it a try. He just had a way with words that set a tone. I ate it up despite all the horrible things that happened. You read true crime, I think you could handle this. @UnidragonFrag it‘s 269 pgs. This book is the reason I went after that collection of short stories. Because one of his stories is in there. 6y
night_shift Hm. Maybe I'll give him another try. I just didn't think there was enough time to build up anything in 'Sour Candy' which I read a few days ago. Perhaps a longer story will let me get a better feel of him as an author. 6y

Earlier in the day, this man and his simple minded son, Pete, had picked up a girl who had escaped the killer hillbillies from down the road. They took her to the town doc but now wait the punishment for meddling in private affairs. I wasn‘t expecting a lot from this, but the writing is pretty decent. I actually care for a lot of the people in here. Even one of the hillbillies.

#TBRtemptation post 4! This book starts at the end of an atrocity: a naked, mutilated young woman escapes the murderous carnage of a cannibalistic Alabama family. Her mind is set on vengeance. So are others', like the soldier brother of one of the victims. Vigilantism swoops down on the Alabama countryside seeking revenge. What could possibly go wrong? Think "The Hills Have Eyes" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Sophoclessweetheart I hated this book but it was so good. 6y
TricksyTails @Sorceryandswords 😂 Your comment makes me want to read it even more now! 6y
Sophoclessweetheart @TricksyTails Kealan is SUCH a good writer and he keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time, I‘d recommend him. But this book is so gorey, twisted and terrifying that I literally hated it, whilst not being able to put it down. 😹 6y

One of the best horror novels I‘ve read in a while but it ended a chapter too early. I felt like some of the character arcs were unresolved.
