Liquid Rules
Liquid Rules: The Delightful and Dangerous Substances That Flow Through Our Lives | Mark Miodownik
3 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Sometimes explosive, often delicious, occasionally poisonous, but always interesting: the New York Times-bestselling author of Stuff Matters shows us the secret lives of liquids: the shadow counterpart of our solid stuff. We all know that without water we couldnt survive, and that sometimes a cup of coffee or a glass of wine feels just as vital. But do we really understand how much we rely on liquids, or the destructive power they hold? Set over the course of a flight from London to San Francisco, Liquid Rules offers readers a fascinating tour of these formless substances, told through the language of molecules, droplets, heartbeats, and ocean waves. Throughout the trip, we encounter fluids within the planefrom a seemingly ordinary cup of tea to a liquid crystal display screenand without, in the volcanoes of Iceland, the frozen expanse of Greenland, and the marvelous California coastline. We come to see liquids as substances of wonder and fascination, and to understand their potential for death and destruction. Just as in Stuff Matters, Mark Miodowniks unique brand of scientific storytelling brings liquids and their mysterious properties to life in a captivating new way.

This is delightful! The best nonfiction listen I‘ve enjoyed in a long time. The writing is both informative and entertaining. If you‘re a hard core science person, there won‘t be anything new here for you, but for the general reader it‘s a treat. Caveat—if you have a serious fear of flying, this might not be for you as it‘s structured as a trans-Atlantic flight. All the ⭐️⭐️⭐️s.

Not as enjoyable as his book Stuff Matters but very good though. He injected a little too much of his own personality into it, which is fine of course but not interesting to me. His scientific insights are incredible and that's what makes this an amazing read.

Science geekery at its best. Really enjoyed this look at liquids, told during the course of an airplane flight. An engaging tour of liquid substances in the droplets, molecules, heartbeats, and waves that make up the fuel, beverages, liquid-crystal display screen, the ocean...and of course, the tiny bottles in the carry-on‘s. Very conversational tone, simple layman‘s terms. Approachable and engaging read 🤗
