A terrifying series about a young boy training to be an exorcist. Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and has been apprenticed to the local Spook. The job is hard, the Spook is distant and many apprentices have failed before Thomas. Somehow Thomas must learn how to exorcise ghosts, contain witches and bind boggarts. But when he is tricked into freeing Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the County, the horror begins . . .

I received this as a birthday present. Quick read and utterly enjoyable, just what I needed after recent non fiction. I think one would call this teen fiction. In some ways it reads younger but then some of the events and themes would certainly affect those too young. Really loved this world and tale, will be looking for more of the series now. Books as gifts always appreciated here!

Well, Tom made me mad. He was told not to do something and he immediately went and did it.😔🤦🏽‍♀️
It was still a great read full of ghosts, ghasts, boggarts, and witches. Tom, being the seventh son of a seventh son, is to become the apprentice of the Spook (kind of like a wizard who‘s a witch and ghost hunter🤷🏽‍♀️). So I‘m obviously going to read the next book in the series even though I‘m mad at Tom. 😆

So...one of the first things you‘re warned about is: beware of girls with pointy shoes.
So...one of the first things you do is talk to a girl with pointy shoes and make her a promise to help her if she ever needs help. No specifics, just an open ended promise of help. 😔 🤦🏽‍♀️
You were also told don‘t go to that part of the woods in the dark and especially by yourself. So, obviously 🙄 you are lured into that part of the woods at midnight to👇🏽

TheBookAddict do something you‘re clearest not supposed to and while the person who can help you isn‘t there. Arrgh!!! 🤦🏽‍♀️ you can just see the cluster-fuck coming. 4y
Sweetkokoro This boy is told EXACTLY what not to do, and STILL does it!! I just sat back and was like “you stupid, stupid, little boy” and shook my head at him. The fact that as a reader I can see what was going to happen but this kid is so dense he can‘t just honestly made me laugh. 4y
TheBookAddict @Sweetkokoro lol I literally said, “stupid, stupid, stupid. Boys are so stupid.” I didn‘t really mean all boys, but he just made me so mad. My husband just replied, “I know, right. So stupid.” 😆 🤦🏽‍♀️ 4y

Finished this a few days ago, I really like the lore and how it focuses on the 7th son, it‘s always usually the 1st born in stories so this was a nice change. I enjoyed the spooky aspects the job of a Spook deals with. I‘m also interested in Mam and how she connects to everything. I will continue with the series.

Sweetkokoro @UnidragonFrag So I watched the movie for this today and holy crap did they change so much!!! It‘s like they just plucked ideas they wanted and then wrote their own story. I now really want to finish reading the books to see how much more was changed. Also I hated the movie hahah it was so bad! 4y
night_shift @Sweetkokoro 😂 yeah, seriously! I watched it some time ago, but while reading this I was like wtf is going on haha .. I put the second one on hold @ the library, so soon I will continue. They're quick reads and I have a few questions I'm curious enough to get answered (mam for one, deff). Such a bad movie lol 4y

Sweetkokoro @UnidragonFrag The minute the first scene played and it was so incredibly different I knew the movie was gonna be terrible. They even changed the role certain characters where in (Tusk and Will soooo different from their book versions) I have the 2nd on hold at my library too. They do go quickly and I really want to know what‘s up with Mam, thats the most driving point for me story wise. 4y
night_shift I'm just going to have to rewatch it. That's all there is to it 🤷‍♀️ I'm not remembering specifics. Ok yeah I turned it on. The beginning with where Gregory puts the witch and how she gets out isn't even correct. Like not at all. 🙄😂 ah, and they made him a drunk. Forgot about that. Bummer. Idk if I can watch this lol 4y
night_shift It was nice to see Kit Harington for a hot second though lol hot. Hah. 4y
Sweetkokoro @UnidragonFrag Okay I‘m so glad I‘m not the only one who thought Gregory came off as a drunk and I have no idea where that came from! But then again they Aged up Tom. Like I said they picked and pulled and then just made a whole new story. It took me a minute to realize that was Kit Harrington lol. I was like “I know that guy.. where have I seen him” haha 4y
night_shift Yeah, seriously! And I can't see that later in the books he becomes a drunk as they're borderline MG books. They aged up everyone. I did finish watching it, not great. Not great at all lol .. I had the same reaction at first too about Kit. Had to squint 😅 4y

This was OK. The lore was interesting, but it seemed like everyone's motivations were all over the place. I'm interested enough to see where this goes that I put the next book on hold. I'm hoping it's a different narrator though!
I watched this movie, Seventh Son, and arguably it is a bad movie, but I enjoy bad sword & sorcery type things so maybe I'm biased.

Sweetkokoro I just finished reading this one as well! I liked the lore and that it was pretty interesting. Is the Seventh Son movie based on this book or was it just a similar element between the two? 4y
night_shift @Sweetkokoro I think the movie is a mash of all the books or maybe a reinvention? Hardly anything from this book happened in the movie, so I don't know lol 4y
Sweetkokoro Okay, I looked it up and your right it sounds like they Mashed the whole series into one movie possibly. I‘m gonna hunt it down and watch it now lol. I too enjoy a bad sword and sorcery movie haha. 4y

night_shift @Sweetkokoro it looks like it's on Netflix, maybe I'll give it a rewatch today... though I wonder if it'll be spoilers for the rest of the books then? Probably haha - let me know if you hate it! 4y
Sweetkokoro If it‘s a mash up of all the books the spoilers might not be that obvious though and who knows what else could potentially be left out. I‘ll check my Netflix and if it‘s there I‘ll totally give it watch and let you know if I hate it haha. 4y
night_shift @Sweetkokoro i think it's probably tough making movies for book series as you don't know if folks will like it.. so it's risky to just tell em book for book because then you're just kinda leaving a cliffhanger if it doesn't surpass it's budget. I always feel like a TV show is the way to go with series as it gives you the time to develop/hook ppl in more. 4y
Sweetkokoro I agree, but I feel a lot of that is because Hollywood puts the bare minimum into making movies based off of books (unless they are already huge). They want a quick cash grab so it really effects the out come. But I would definitely be down for more tv series based on book series, there is a lot of potential with that, if Hollywood would just realize people react stronger to material that follows its original source we could have more! 4y
night_shift @Sweetkokoro great point! They treat books with a someone big enough following to make a little profit on so poorly :( like, I doubt we'll ever get a decent adaption for Wrinkle in Time. I'm scared for the Chaos Walking trilogy (though I haven't heard anything about its development since shutdown). Look how crazy profitable GoT was.. tv is where it's at. 4y
Sweetkokoro Oh yah GOT was huge, and I personally think it really helped show people like fantasy stories on tv! I haven‘t read that series but I understand the fear! A few series I like were bought this year for tv production so I‘m both excited and scared, Hollywood takes way to many liberties with adaptations sometimes, so it really is hard to have faith in them. 4y
night_shift @Sweetkokoro yes! The ending was just ugh though. The first season is very, very close to the first book which was crazy. Chaos Walking was so, so good. I'm afraid what they'll do to it. I've heard a few that I'm worried about too. You know, an awesome adaption was Good Omens! Tv show! It is hard to have faith in that machine, which is unfortunate. They could make some badass things if they'd just stick to the source. 4y
Sweetkokoro I actually never watched but i know many who did lol. I feel if the authors are involved they have a higher chance of sticking to the main source. I still need to get around to watching Good Omens. 4y
night_shift @Sweetkokoro yeah, the author was involved but the show ended up going beyond the books and then 🤷‍♀️ I think as an author it would be so cool to be involved in the making of a movie of your book. I think Good Omens is on prime? I'm wanting to reread the book eventually! 4y

“It made me nervous though, because it was a scary job. I was going to learn how to protect farms and villages from things that go bump in the night. Dealing with ghouls, boggarts, and all manner of wicked beasties would be all in a day‘s work. That‘s what the Spook did, and I was going to be his #apprentice.” #QuotsyOct19 #AllHallowsRead #GiveAScaryBook

This series started off a little slow, then ended up being wonderful👍 But does anyone else get annoyed when they change the cover style half way through a series? 😡

scripturient-ink I read the first book years ago when I was a kid and loved it, but I didn't realise there were so many of them!! Maybe it's time to get back to them 🤔 5y
Rambo_Reads @scripturient-ink yeah they're great kids books - I thought the story developed well. I think there's a spin-off series too but i haven't read those ones 5y

I listened to this audiobook and I really enjoyed this creepy tale. Tom is the seventh son of a seventh son and is sent to apprentice with the Spook. His job is to contain the witches, ghouls beasties and boggarts. I actually held my breath a couple times. A great introduction to scary stories.

What a fun story! I was hooked right away and spent the next few hours in front of the fire until I was finished. A darkly enjoyable tale of monsters, witches, and other supernatural beings. Perfect for middle schoolers or upper elementary.

CouronneDhiver Yessss! This picture is perfect 👌🏽So cozy 6y

A good start to a series about a boy training to hunt all kinds of supernatural creatures and ghosts. This #24in48 marathon is really helping clear my TBR pile from the library @24in48

This was a very quick read. An interesting fantasy book involving the old-school bad fictional creatures: witches, boggarts, ghosts and ghouls. This is a book series I‘ll continue and have recommended to my students!

With all the hoopla about the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter this week, my son and I were talking about some of the books I found for him to read in between the HP books when he was growing up. This one is the first of a series that we both grew to love and anticipated new entries as eagerly as we did HP. If you have not read the Last Apprentice series, do it. You'll be glad you did!

minkyb Thanks for the recommendation! 7y

I picked this book up to be my New Year's Eve read and powered right through it! It is a 9-12 yr old novel. I found it a very satisfying read as an adult. I liked the dark feel of the story, it definitely had some creepy, creepy moments, it has excellent character building and moved at a fast pace. I enjoyed the main character, Tom, despite his questionable choices, and I want to see more of Alice. I will pursue the next book in this series!

This one is up next. I decided another kids book would be perfect - I love dark fantasy, but don't have the headspace for intricate world building right now. I've heard great things about this series, so I am hoping to enjoy it 😊

I liked it 3.5 stars. I got it free from B&N readouts. I have to admit it was scary at times but I pushed through it and really enjoyed the character build up. It's part of a series so of course there are a lot of unanswered situations at the end of the book.

For years, Old Gregory has been the Spook for the county, ridding the local villages of evil. Now his time is coming to an end. But who will take over for him? Twenty-nine apprentices have tried–some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.
Only Thomas Ward is left. He's the last hope; the last apprentice.

🌟🌟🌟3/5. I loved this series so much when I was a kid, never managed to complete the series, wouldn't read it now at 19 yrs old.

Readingrobin Just had a library patron, a man in his 60s tell me how he loves this series! 8y
HiddenGemBooks Brilliant ! That just might be the sweetest thing ever. 😊👏 8y
Martyn_J_Pass I'm 34 and read the first few of these simply because they're set in and around the town where I live. Intended for YA, they're pretty good until about book 7-8 where Old Gregory gets put on the back burner and turns into a bit of a wimp. It's a shame - the guy was a legend. Some confusing moral lessons in there too lol. Still, love the author and his work regardless. 8y

I really enjoyed this book! It's actually pretty scary! I was a bit disappointed with the very very young age of the MC tho. The character was fine, just SOOO young. That's the main reason I haven't continued the series, tho I'd like to finish it at some point.
