In the days that followed, as the fires continued to burn through the area, Brian hastily pulled together A Fire Story and posted it onlineit immediately went viral. He is now expanding his original webcomic to include environmental insight and the fire stories of his neighbors and others in his community. Remarkable. Delicate balance of facts, sentiment and humour.
Unenviable first hand insight into an experience which is understood as unique to each individual, but becoming far too commonplace, that is, house destroyed by natural disaster fire. Such a touching rallying of human beings, community.
Inclusion of other people's lost home stories, also helps draw attention to how emergency response might be improved, in future.
Read Afterword!

This graphic memoir includes Brian Fies' own experience of losing his house to the 2017 Northern California wildfires, but also other people's stories.

It's a moving read. With every page, you empathize with him, and every person hit by this tragedy. A life worth of things lost, the stress of losing your home, of having to deal with insurances, but also with Internet services, electric/gas services, etc. Brian Fies conveys all these very well.

Amazing graphic memoir of the tragic 2017 fire that ravaged a large swath of Santa Rosa ,Ca.6200 homes.Emergency systems seemed not to send out appropriate signals , most people woke up to flee with little thru the smoke & fire. This sunday the Bay Area will suffer with too much rain & wind .An atmospheric River is coming thru that may cause flooding & debris flows in the 2020 fire burn scars.Climate change is here to stay , unfortunately.

As I write this review fires are one again burning in California. So this book, while a memoir of one group's experience, is once again being lived by hundreds if not thousands of people. This story is poignant. I love how the author tells not just his story, but that of neighbors, friends, and other people he knew, some of which didn‘t live to see the current blazes.

LibrarianRyan I think this was the perfect format to tell this story. The author mixed his visual medium with his storytelling in a way that was compelling and kept the pages turning. A modern masterpiece of graphic novels that I think will be read for years to come, and maybe even be on future lists of best of best.

Great pick @cwarnier !!

This is a gripping graphic memoir from an artist who lost everything in a wildfire. It is heartbreaking, but he manages to find some moments of humor and hope.

It will be on its way tomorrow @LibrarianRyan

And @REPollock you are so sweet to send bookmarks and stickers each month. It‘s such a nice touch 😊

#LMPBC

REPollock I found this one particularly moving, given the terrible fires on the west coast of the US and in Australia this year. 4y

A guy and his wife fled the 2017 CA wildfires which consumed their entire town, lost everything, & had to negotiate where their lives went from there. He's a cartoonist & drew a quick 18-frame strip 2 days after they evacuated, about their flight & losing their home. That went hugely viral, & he's developed it into a full length graphic novel which includes the stories of other people who lost their homes in the fires. On to you, @mklong #LMPBC

Reading this book during the pandemic is wild. I identify with a lot of things these survivors of the California fires experienced. Their disaster was so focused though and the pandemic has affected the whole planet.

I have really come to love nonfiction graphic novels, and this one is just as good. The stories of what is lost, and how little some of them had after their homes were lost. It really makes me think about everything I have, and could do with out.

My selected book for #ReadHarder2020 “Read a book about a natural disaster”. I lived in Chicago all my life and never really had to deal with natural disasters. This is scary stuff but the author‘s resilience is evident in the graphic novel. He also incorporates other folks stories of that night through interviews.

TW: images of destruction caused by fire

"A Fire Story" is Brian Fies' firsthand account of his experiences after one of the many devastating northern California wildfires that took place in 2017.

Expanded from an original webcomic shared in the first few days after the event, it gives an unflinching look, from evacuation to the mental and emotional processing of the loss of their home...

(Continued in comments ⬇️)

Librariana (1 of 1) at how he and his wife coped with the aftermath of the tragedy.

In addition to crucial environmental insight, it includes personal stories from other victims, friends and members of the community, eager to move forward and rebuild.

I teared up a couple of times because humanity is strange, and life is dangerous, and I lost my home once, and now I work in the business of helping people recover from hard times. It‘s a VERY good book if you want to think about any of those things.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

From afar, I know that these fires cause great tragedy as they consume homes & lives. This book helped me comprehend the depth of trauma each individual faces when this type of devastation strikes.

It‘s a beautifully written story of loss with a glimmer of new beginnings. The author captured the emotional impact so vividly & I am thoroughly impressed with his work.
