The Mayor of Castro Street
The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk | Randy Shilts
14 posts | 9 read | 13 to read
The Mayor of Castro Street is Shilts's acclaimed story of Harvey Milk, the man whose personal life, public career, and tragic assassination mirrored the dramatic and unprecedented emergence of the gay community in America during the 1970s. His is a story of personal tragedies and political intrigues, assassination in City Hall and massive riots in the streets, the miscarriage of justice and the consolidation of gay power and gay hope.

I read Shilts‘s account of the AIDS epidemic during the epidemic, but hadn‘t read this one till now. I was 13 when Milk was murdered, but some details from the 1970s still jolted me, despite my age. 1) Cops were allowed to drink on the job 2) Cleaning up after your dog in most cities was the exception, rather than the rule (Milk pushed hard for dog poo laws too!). Happy Pride, everyone 🏳️‍🌈❤️🏳️‍🌈

This was a re-read for me. Harvey Milk is one of my biggest heroes. He was able to lead so many and accomplish so much in such a short period, and his legacy lives on in the figures of people like Cleve Jones. I only wish Mr. Milk could have lived to write his own memoir and continue his positive influence.

Not a lot of Litsy or reading time yesterday, but putting words into action on a beautiful, unprecedented and historic day. So proud to have been a part of it with my two daughters. Thanks to all who came out to support inclusiveness, kindness and equality for all in such a peaceful and positive way! #womensmarch #womensmarchsf

BooksForEmpathy I was there too! Love knowing other Littens were there. 8y

Post 11 hour work day, spending the evening with takeout, my puppy, and one of my favorite movies. While not a direct adaptation of The Mayor of Castro Street, Milk draws greatly from the material in the book (in addition to the involvement of many of Milk's surviving friends and colleagues). A friend who worked on the No on 6 campaign said that the film was shockingly accurate. It's not a feel good movie per se, but still inspirational.

Nebklvr A great movie 8y

I was going to do a photo collage, but how do you choose? Who do you choose? So on this bright blue day, Harvey Milk says it best. Happy NYC Pride/Pride Month/Pride Weekend! ❤️💛💚💙💜
