“The story of a librarian who brought her culture to life through words.“
This lyrical biography honors Pura Belpré, the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City, whose storytelling planted seeds of culture, diversity, and inspiration in the hearts of countless children.
A beautifully illustrated #PictureBook biography that tells the story of Pura Belpre, the first Puerto Rican librarian at the NYPL. I loved the incorporation of Spanish into the English narrative. She sounds like she was a remarkable woman who brought her stories and culture to children around the world. #BBRC #LetterP
I haven‘t even started this yet, but look at these endpages!
Pula Belpre was New York City‘s first Puerto Rican librarian, who championed bilingual literature. When she came to America in 1921, Pura Belpré carried the cuentos folklóricos of her Puerto Rican homeland. Finding a new home at the New York Public Library as a bilingual assistant, she turned her popular retellings into libros and spread story seeds across the land. Beautiful story/illustrationsâ£ï¸

#SleighTheShelves Day 29: Known for her storyteller‘s #Candle, Pura‘s story is one rooted in a sense of community coupled with a fierce sense of pride for one‘s origins and the overwhelming desire to plant seeds of stories fostering love, compassion, and our shared humanity. This book seems timely as I plant my herb garden. #childrensbook #truestory
Planting Stories is a B picture book that would be great as an AS or SR. It is written by Anika Aldamuy Denise and illustrated by Paola Escobar. It about the very first Puerto Rican Librarian. Awards include the 2020 Pura Belpré Author Honor Book, 2020 Orbis Pictus Honor Book for Outstanding Nonfiction, Smithsonian Ten Best Children‘s Books of 2019 and it is a 2020 ALA Notable Book. A great book for promoting diversity! #UCFLAE3414SU20
Donations keep coming in to my library for our students who need to see themselves in literature. I'm so grateful.
Babysitting your nephew- is also a great time for Read Alouds! This picture book biography beautifully illustrates the life of Pura Belpré, Puerto Rico‘s first Librarian and is a honorable 2019 Pura Belpre Award Recipient. #UCFLAE3414SPC20
A #picturebook biography of the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City: Pura Belpré. At library storytimes & outreach visits, she shared the folktales she had learned through her family‘s oral tradition. These stories weren‘t in books, so she wrote them down & they were published. Art by Paola Escobar captures the feel of the early 20th c by using muted shades of deep colours. Flowers burst forth to symbolize magical elements of story. ?
Pretty #endpapers. 😊
“The seeds she has planted, the roots that grew shoots into the open air of possibility, have become a lush landscape into which she steps, as though she has never left.â€
I believe the children would really enjoy this to learn about Puerto Rican homeland tales.
“Planting Stories†was written by Anika Denise in 2019. This story describes a girl who becomes a librarian and shares stories from her homeland to them. This story was very interesting and I really enjoyed it!
Did I read this while I was on the reference desk and the library was momentarily quiet? Yes. Did the ending make me tear up and almost cry while at said desk? I'm not telling. I love this book, and Pura Belpré is absolutely someone all aspiring librarians should know and keep her spirit in your work! 💖📚
Pura Belpré is one of my librarian heroes. In 1921 she came from Puerto Rico to New York where she got a job at the library as a bilingual assistant. But the library doesn‘t have stories from Puerto Rico, or even books in Spanish, so Pura creates storytimes, puppet theaters and even has her own stories published.
This beautiful story illustrates the legacy of Pura Belpré and how she forever changed libraries.
