Treasure Island!!!
Treasure Island!!! | Sara Levine
14 posts | 20 read | 25 to read
When a college graduate with a history of hapless jobs (ice cream scooper; gift wrapper; laziest ever part-time clerk at The Pet Library) reads Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island, she is dumbstruck by the timid design of her life. When had she ever dreamed a scheme? When had she ever done a foolish, overbold act? When had she ever, like Jim Hawkins, broke from her friends, raced for the beach, stolen a boat, killed a man, and eliminated an obstacle that stood in the way of her getting a hunk of gold? Convinced that Stevenson's book is cosmically intended for her, she redesigns her life according to its Core Values: boldness, resolution, independence and horn-blowing. Accompanied by her mother, her sister, and a hostile Amazon parrot that refuses to follow the script, our heroine embarks on a domestic adventure more frightening than anything she'd originally planned. Treasure Island!!! is the story of a ferocious obsession, told by an original voice-intelligent, perverse, relentlessly self- extricating, and funny.

Pretty good semi-humorous story of a twenty-something girl with a dysfunctional family and an obsession with the book, Treasure Island. Parts are kind of gritty for a funny book, but I mostly liked it.

This was outrageously hilarious but also pretty disturbing. A character study of a young woman who‘s had a break with reality and uses Robert Louis Stevenson‘s “Treasure Island” as a guidebook for her life which has gone off the rails. There‘s even a parrot. She‘s terrible to her parents, but especially awful to her sister, who all try to help her. I don‘t know what the lesson is here but I do know I enjoyed the ride. #BlameItOnTheKidUpstairs

TheBookgeekFrau This sounds similar to Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind, except it was The Great Gatsby instead of Treasure Island. 1y
Ruthiella I just read this too due to @TheKidUpstairs ! 😂 At first the protagonist so awful, I didn‘t get the humor but eventually I enjoyed it. 1y
TheKidUpstairs 🤣🤣🤣 I love your hashtag and your review. I kind of loved that there wasn't really a lesson learned, it was just an over the top portrait of a completely self absorbed woman. She didn't really learn and grow, and that was part of the enjoyment for me. 1y

I was no fan of A Confederacy of Dunces, but I also read it 30 years ago. I‘m not the same person I was then. At first this book annoyed me because like Ignatius J. Reilly, the narrator is a self absorbed sociopath. But it‘s a short book, I persevered and I was able to enjoy it, weird as it is. I laughed out loud a few times. A woman adopts Treasure Island as a self help book and proceeds to alienate everyone around her. TW for animal neglect.

Vansa I didn't like A confederacy of dunces either. I absolutely could not get it 1y
Ruthiella @Vansa I wonder if I would feel differently about it now? I might? 1y

They say a well read woman is a dangerous thing, but what about a narcissistic 20-something woman who decides to structure her life around her obsession with ONE book - Treasure Island? Our narrator's life choices are guided by her love for Jim Hawkins, and just may cause disaster to rain down on those around her. She is certain none of it is her fault, and everything would be fine if people would just listen to her and follow her whims cont'd

TheKidUpstairs ...the result is ridiculous, over the top, and too much fun. I laughed out loud so many times (slightly dangerous when you're reading at work!). Sometimes you just have to love a main character so absurdly unlikeable making such farcically horrible life choices.

High pick. Loved every page.

If you've ever wondered what would happen if an aimless sociopath were to become obsessed with Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, I have the book for you! 😜 This has been on my TBR list for years and it was completely bonkers. I can't think of a single person I would recommend it to, but I thought it was great.

Chrissyreadit I love your review. 3y

So... #ANationOfThieves is from a TV series inspired by Treasure Island (thanks @EadieB !) The tagged is a quite daft (so far) book about a woman who also becomes inspired (obsessed may be more accurate) by Treasure Island, after her sister accidentally leaves her library books on her sofa.

Favourite quote so far:
“Treasure Island,” Lars mused. “Ever worry that if you only read one book, you‘ll get scurvy of the brain?”

EadieB @RachelO This is the classic book that the show Black Sails is a prequel to (edited) 5y

I've had this on my TBR for years, thanks to Literary Disco, and it was worth the wait. A woman in her 20s reads Treasure Island and becomes obsessed, wanting to live her life by the core ideas found therein. This includes buying a very expensive parrot with whom she doesn't get along and who suffers an untimely end, so TW for that. There's friend drama, relationship drama, family drama. It's so darkly funny, I just loved it. 4.5⭐

Suddenly this main character reminds me of Anne Shirley. Doesn't this feel like something she would say while Marilla is chopping vegetables and trying not to roll her eyes?

Tanisha_A Yep, sounds like that! 😆 6y

This review is for “Slower” Sara Levine‘s short story and number 2 in the Short Story Advent Calendar. This one is a gut punch- mixed race couple with a child- mother is a paralegal and social climber, dad is a small time pot dealer and main caretaker of the child. Story is told from his POV- he is compassionate and a good man. Mother leaves him when her parents visit- says the baby made him slow- he slows down to rationalize what has happened.

I couldn't decide how to rate this but overall liked it; I just wanted a tad more with the ending. This is such a weird novel that reminded me of A Confederacy of Dunces. Similar unlikeable protagonist who does awful things that she can wholly justify; I couldn't decide for the most of the book if she was just awful or crazy. Quirky supporting characters, incl. an awesome parrot named Richard. Not a book for everyone but well-written and original.
