Brave, Not Perfect
Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder | Reshma Saujani
In a book inspired by her popular TED talk, New York Times bestselling author Reshma Saujani empowers women and girls to embrace imperfection and bravery. Imagine if you lived without the fear of not being good enough. If you didn't care how your life looked on Instagram, or worry about what total strangers thought of you. Imagine if you could let go of the guilt, and stop beating yourself up for tiny mistakes. What if, in every decision you faced, you took the bolder path? Too many of us feel crushed under the weight of our own expectations. We run ourselves ragged trying to please everyone, all the time. We lose sleep ruminating about whether we may have offended someone, pass up opportunities that take us out of our comfort zones, and avoid rejection at all costs. There's a reason we act this way, Reshma says. As girls, we were taught to play it safe. Well-meaning parents and teachers praised us for being quiet and polite, urged us to be careful so we didn't get hurt, and steered us to activities at which we could shine. The problem is that perfect girls grow up to be women who are afraid to fail. It's time to stop letting our fears drown out our dreams and narrow our world, along with our chance at happiness. By choosing bravery over perfection, we can find the power to claim our voice, to leave behind what makes us unhappy, and go for the things we genuinely, passionately want. Perfection may set us on a path that feels safe, but bravery leads us to the one we're authentically meant to follow. In Brave, Not Perfect, Reshma shares powerful insights and practices to help us override our perfect girl training and make bravery a lifelong habit. By being brave, not perfect, we can all become the authors of our biggest, boldest, and most joyful life.

This book‘s heart is in the right place. But the message is one we‘ve heard many times before. (Did you know that boys & girls are socialized differently?!) The phrase “brave not perfect” is a great rallying cry. But, there isn‘t anything else that is new here.

This was good and I found the message extremely applicable. However, as I have found with all self help books I‘ve read, it was just too repetitive. I think if this were an essay it would have been more effective.

I found it repetitive with some broad unscientific claims. I understand the obsession for perfection that many people have but it‘s not just females. There is a fine line between being the best you can be and striving for perfection. There is bravery everywhere that underlies doing the right thing. Just my opinion even though it may be an unpopular one.

This was good. Nothing earth shattering. I do see how women do fall prey to the need to be perfect, and in some respects I fall victim to it myself, but maybe not to the extent of some. I had a rough year with a lot of rejection and it is hard to keep putting myself out there again and again. This was definitely motivational.

Reading this after Melinda Gates's Moment of Lift has got me all kinds of inspired. Whew!

Many good takeaways depending on your perspective. The long-lasting damage of sheltering girls from failure and allowing them to feel pressured into perfection is something we need to change ASAP. And women have got to stop nitpicking and comparing ourselves to each other. Support, uplift, go do that terrifying risky thing.

Great audiobook for exercise!

Do you ever see another person reading nearby and wonder, “What are they reading?” I‘m at a show, and a nearby woman is reading the tagged book. It‘s the only book in view. #ThisIsSpinalTap #35thAnniversary #TribecaFilmFestival #BeaconTheater

Today‘s read should be quick but enjoyable, and beneficial. (This is totally a mantra I need to adopt, because I am SUCH a perfectionist, and get really stressed out about not being up-to-snuff.) #bravenotperfect #fearlessfailmorelivebolder #reshmasaujani

I really liked that this book was short and hard hitting. It's as if the author knows her audience don't want to spend a few hours reading all the extra fluff it would take to make the book 300 pages, and I appreciated that (not all books are as considerate).
I'm sure this book will resonate with lots of women and I hope the message gets through to all people that it's better to be brave than perfect.

The author's Ted Talk and Girls Who Code movement are awesome. I struggled with the book a bit because I'm not convinced everyone struggles with the need to be perfect. The book did give perspective on how many boys and girls are raised and expected to behave. The best take away was flexing your brave muscle. A quick read if you need a kick in the pants.

I just finished this and want to tell everyone about it. I highly recommend it. It‘s short - the audio was only 5 hours. It talks a lot about raising girls and perfectionism etc. also tips to overcome some of the stuff we‘ve been programmed to accept. It was simple things but also 🤯 and so relatable. #readwomen #diverseauthor #librarybook
