In a land of lost wonders, the past is stirring once more Gene's life resembles a debutante's dream. Yet she hides a secret that would see her shunned by the nobility. Gene is both male and female. Then she displays unwanted magical abilities - last seen in mysterious beings from an almost-forgotten age. Matters escalate further when her parents plan a devastating betrayal, so she flees home, dressed as a boy. The city beyond contains glowing glass relics from a lost civilization. They call to her, but she wants freedom not mysteries. So, reinvented as 'Micah Grey', Gene joins the circus. As an aerialist, she discovers the joy of flight - but the circus has a dark side. She's also plagued by visions foretelling danger. A storm is howling in from the past, but will she heed its roar? Praise for Pantomime 'Pantomime by Laura Lam took me to an exotic and detailed world, peopled by characters that I'd love to be friends with . . . and some I'd never want to cross paths with' - Robin Hobb 'Pantomime is a fantastical, richly drawn, poignant take on a classic coming-of-age story . . . a vibrant tale told with surety and grace' - Leigh Bardugo 'Set in a vividly imagined world with wonderful steampunk touches, Pantomimeis a fable-like story as beautifully unique as its main character' - Malinda Lo 'Welcome to a world of shills and showmen, fading tech and circus freaks, where nothing and no-one is what it appears. An absorbing, accomplished debut - Elspeth Cooper

#WyrdAndWonder day 21: beyond the binary

Good/evil. Black/white. Male/female. Fantasy/scifi. Why limit ourselves to binaries?

I‘ve picked Pantomime by Laura Lam - a YA fantasy in which a young intersex person runs away and joins the circus, but they‘re plagued by visions of danger. I haven‘t read this yet, but I‘m very excited to dive in and meet Micah Grey!

#BookMail Pt7 In non-Star Wars mail,we have this pretty little book about circuses, love, magic & being different in a world that prizes sameness. Gene is born with magic inside her & another secret, she‘s both boy & girl. Fleeing her home after a betrayal, she reinvents herself in the circus as Micah Grey, aerialist extraordinaire. But she‘s beset by dark visions foretelling danger, will she heed them before it‘s too late? Had me at Circus & Magic.

Soubhiville Had me at “both boy and girl”, but circus helps! 6y

Pickpick

Yaaay finally got to finish it. I have somewhat mixed feelings about the ending -- I didn't want things to turn out like that with Aenea, and I need to know a heckuva lot more about Drystan to judge what he does. Still, I was riveted.

I have to take a moment to recommend this book it is brilliant and I haven't even finished it yet 😯 pantomime follows the tale of Gene/Micah a sixteen year old born with both male and female genitals in a fantasy world, who struggles with her family's and societies expectations before running away to the circus - a place if magic and wonder, to escape the past and deal with feelings for both men and women.

I almost forgot to do #riotgram Challenge Day 3, #onewordtitle 😰 There are a lot to choose from, but I'm going with these, first released by Strange Chemistry, then repurchased by TOR. TOR re-released them recently, and the third book, MASQUERADE, will be out soon! It's on NetGalley now, for those of you who use it.

Sometimes I really struggle with themes because I don't keep books after reading them unless I really love them. This was one of those times, I couldn't find any #LGBT+ #UKYA books that I'd actually read. So instead, here's one I've been meaning to read for absolutely ages and that everyone I know raves about. It's now back in print too (the original imprint closed down) so let me know if you want to read along with me! #UKYANov #LGBTQIA #YA

yayeahyeah Soooo amazing!! Can't wait for book 3, Masquerade, early next year. :) 8y
overflowingklc I'm not a fantasy fan or a circuses fan but read this because Strange Chemistry's editor raved about it from moment she found it on slush pile (before SC even existed). It was well worth the raving. 8y
