Long Life
Long Life: Essays and Other Writings | Mary Oliver
12 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
Poets must read and study, but also they must learn to tilt and whisper, shout, or dance, each in his or her own way, or we might just as well copy the old books. But, no, that would never do, for always the new self swimming around in the old world feels itself uniquely verbal. And that is just the point: how the world, moist and bountiful, calls to each of us to make a new and serious response. That's the big question, the one the world throws at you every morning. 'Here you are, alive. Would you like to make a comment?' This book is my comment.--from the Foreword.

#AcrossApril Day 22: For the #EarthDay prompt, I was reminded of Mary Oliver‘s from the tagged collection. I find this message to be infinitely comforting: the notion that while there are multiple houses or thresholds that we “walk out from” or “go back to” in this lifetime, there is one that would forever remain constant. It is a good reminder that we are, all of us, earth‘s inhabitants. My Poetry Friday feature here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-lIz

I am reading Mary Oliver and my heart is once more in my throat with just these lines. I continue to mourn that there will be no more new words from this lover of the universe, this mistress of mother earth.

I apparently made it home just in time for the start of the marathon. I didn‘t plan anything this time so I‘m just going to pick books based on what I‘m in the mood for at the moment. #24in48

After my mom died, I discovered that throughout the years, her sister had been writing out Mary Oliver poems and sending them to her via snail mail with little notes. “This poem reminds me of your dog.”, said one. “I read this today and it reminded me of you.”, said another. Oliver was a lifeline between two sisters who would periodically lose one another, the way that sisters sometimes can.

May poetry be a lifeline for you and someone you ❤️
