Luther
Luther: The Calling | Neil Cross
9 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
A brilliant standalone novel hailed as some of the best crime fiction to hit bookstores this year (Hollywood Reporter) and a prequel to the hit BBC America TV show Luther, by the Edgar Awardwinning creator and sole writer of the show. Is Luther a force for good or a man hell-bent on self-destruction? Meet Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. Hes a homicide detective with an extraordinary case-clearance rate. Hes obsessive, instinctive, and intense. Nobody who ever stood at his side has a bad word to say about him. And yet there are rumors that Luther is badnot corrupt, but tormented. After years of chasing the most depraved criminals in Londons gritty underworld, he seethes with a hidden fury he can barely control, making him do things any other detective wouldnt and shouldnt do. Luther: The Calling is the story of the serial killer case that tore Luthers personal and professional relationships apart and propelled him over the precipicebeyond fury, beyond vengeance, all the way to the other side of the law. Luther: The Calling, the first in a new series of novels featuring DCI John Luther, takes us into Luthers past and into his mind. It is the story of the serial killer case that tore his personal and professional relationships apart and propelled him over the precipicebeyond fury, beyond vengeance, all the way to the other side of the law. Is Luther a force for good or a man hell-bent on self-destruction? Edgar Awardwinning writer Neil Cross has created one of the most compelling characters in modern crime fiction. Luther: The Calling is a compulsively readable novel by the writer hailed by The Guardian as Britains own Stephen King.

Mitch @Crazeedi not sure Diane. We watched all the series of Luther on the BBC. They were filmed on our old neighbourhood which also happens to be Idris Elba‘s old neighbourhood! 2y
Crazeedi @Mitch that's so cool! I'll be looking for it, it may be available sometime. Thanks!! 2y

My Hackney boy has made it onto a postcard! If you‘ve never seen Luther - this is one instance where the TV show is 1,000x better that the book!

julesG Could I ask you to get one of these cards for me? Pretty please with sugar on top? 5y

Mehso-so

I found the book much more darker then the TV show and was very uneasy while I read it. The author was way to good at setting the scene. This would be a book for those of us who like nasty side of human nature.

Pickpick

Hard to decide quite who's the most damaged, tormented and haunted: the brutal killer or the detective. Skilfully narrated, my audiobook version was gripping. If you know the TV version, you won‘t be disappointed with this. It‘s brutal though so tread carefully. There are also a couple of incidents of animal cruelty which made me want to fast forward. Definitely worth a read though.

So - they‘re filming Luther in my neighbourhood today. Sadly there‘s an Idris body double for the shootout scene. #waitingforTHEmantoappear

Chelleo 🤩 7y
Mitch I‘m walking around the block, trying to be inconspicuous until he appears! 7y
BookNAround @Mitch I‘d get the full compliment of 10,000 steps plus some if I was walking around the block until Idris Elba appeared. That man is yummy! 7y

julesG Why didn't you tell me any earlier. I would have joined you. 😎 7y
julesG And which neighbourhood? Just so I can invite myself over for tea, next time I'm in Hackney. 7y
Mitch Hackney! @julesG you‘re MOST welcome, although I can‘t always promise our homegrown neighbourhood bad boy will be in town! 7y
GidgetsTreasures75 Wow!!! I hope you get to see Idris!!! 😍 7y
julesG We could go stalking any other baddie or goodie 😁 a friend of mine spotted Idris, the real one, about 25min ago. 7y
Mitch 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 @julesG are we neighbours?? 7y
AmyG I hope you get to see him, too. ❤️ 7y
julesG @Mitch My friend, the one I often visit in London, lives near Homerton Overground Station, she used to live near Clapton Pond. I don't know where she was and what she was doing. It's not like her to even notice celebrities, let alone knowing their names. 😀 7y
Mitch Small world @julesG I live just near Homerton Overground ! 7y
Christine11 I ❤️ Idris Elba 😍😍😍 7y
EvieBee Lol what a treat! That double looks a lot like Idris though. 7y
CouronneDhiver Start a protest ... maybe they‘ll bring out the real Idris. 😂 7y
Mitch I was giddy just being close to the coat and tie @CouronneDhiver 🤩🤩🤩 7y

Doing a re-watch of Luther, leading up to the just-released-on-Netflix two episode fourth series. One day I'll read The Calling, Neil Cross' Luther novel set before the first series.
