There‘s one particular section describing the breakdown in the chain of duties that leads to a disaster—it‘s one of the most powerful, brilliantly laid out scenarios I‘ve ever read.
Did it matter … which part of the corpse had been consumed by which type of maggot, by those who gorged themselves or by those who gave the food to other maggots? So long as living flesh was prey to be devoured, did it matter whose stomach it had gone to fill?
You see … people don‘t want to think. And the deeper they get into trouble, the less they want to think. But by some sort of instinct, they feel that they ought to and it makes them feel guilty. So they‘ll bless and follow anyone who gives them a justification for not thinking. Anyone who makes a virtue—a highly intellectual virtue—out of what they know to be their sin, their weakness and their guilt.

Her feeling for the railroad was the same: worship of the skill that had gone to make it, of the ingenuity of someone‘s clean, reasoning mind, worship with a secret smile that said she would know how to make it better some day. She hung around the tracks and the round-houses like a humble student, but the humility had a touch of future pride, a pride to be earned.

panI‘m used to the traditional “Tell them what you‘re going to tell them,” Tell them,” “Tell them what you‘ve told them” of instruction, because “Tell them,” “Tell them,” ad nauseam gets old. Any Rand beats you over the head with her philosophy. Okay, fine, I knew this before I began reading the book. I read it for the story, not the philosophy. Unfortunately, the story is predictable: boy meets girl, girl hates boy, girl loves “ideal” man. The end.
pickEpic! I have read this book twice in it‘s entirety and have reread passages countless times. This book has not only stood the test of time, it is arguably more relevant now than ever.

pickI waited too long to read this! I've heard so much about it over the years, positive and negative, and I've owned a copy of it for a long time. I was always intimidated by my paperback copy's girth, and on the shelf it sat. I ended up using an audible credit for the version read by Christopher Hurt. I'm glad I did. His performance was fantastic and I really liked the novel. I followed along and read some of it in my chunky paperback along the way.
I just picked this up at a local library sale, its a bit daunting if you ask me
pickYooouuuu guuuyysss!!! I‘m finally finished! This beast of a book is definitely an investment of time and energy, but it‘s no shrug. (Hehe get it?) This Book was definitely before its time. I loved the strong female lead and the statements about government regulation, socialism, beaurocracy and capitalism. Not to mention the exploration into the meaning of existence. Light read: no. Good read: yes

This is the first book that came to mind when I saw the planes, trains and automobiles prompt. This book has so much about trains in it. I once also saw a train car in Boston that had been named "Dagny Taggart" after the character in this book. There is also a scene in the book where Dagny flies a plane, so that's two of the three. #planestrainsautomobiles #photoadaynov16
