Jean-Baptiste Baratte, an engineer of modest origin, arrives in the city in 1785, charged by the Kings minister with emptying the overflowing cemetery of Les Innocents, a ancient site whose stench is poisoning the neighborhoods air and water and leaving a vile taste in its inhabitants food. At first the ambitious Baratte sees his work as a chance to clear the burden of history, a fitting task for a modern man of reason. But before long he begins to suspect that the destruction of the cemetery might be a prelude to both his own demise and that of the monarchy. Baratte expects the task to be unpleasant but cannot foresee the dramas and calamities it will trigger, or the incident that will transform his life. As unrest against the court of Louis XVI mounts, the engineer realizes that the future he had planned may no longer be the one he wants. His assignment becomes a year of relentless work, exhuming of mummified corpses and listening to the chants of priests, a year of assault and sudden death. A year of friendship, too, and of desire and love. A year unlike any other he has lived.

Definitely a slow reading week here. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I finished Three Little Words. I started and finished Pure. I‘m almost done with The Only Plane in the Sky. I‘ve just started Bridget Cleary and I‘m not convinced I‘ll stick with it so we‘ll see. #bookreport

Cinfhen I see @Mdargusch read it!!! Hi, Mariann!!! Miss you and the gang. Hope all is well xxx 4y

Reviewsbylola Ha! Totally not surprised! The Irish superstition and folklore was a bit much at first but the author has touched on the psychology of why the idea of fairies was clung to so hard and it makes a lot of sense. @Cinfhen 4y

Les Innocents was a cemetery in Paris that opened in the Middle Ages and was excavated and removed in the 19th century after a subterranean wall was breached and flooded local homes with corpses. This is the fictional account of the removal. I would have preferred more focus on the decaying bodies and the like (for instance, my research tells me that the “grave wax”, a remnant of decaying bodies, was removed during the excavation and used to ⬇️

Reviewsbylola make candles and soap. Even so, it was a fascinating, character driven novel that temporarily satiated my need for a creepy, grotesque story. 4y
Ruthiella Great review! I read this a few years ago and liked it a lot and I JUST finished Ingenious Pain by the same author and am less enthused. But I‘ll keep reading Miller. I think he‘s a good writer. 4y
KatieB This book opened up a part of Parisian history I had no idea about! 4y

Here is the response I got from Book Depository regarding the book I ordered from them. They sent me one with a completely different cover.

I wasn‘t so nice in my reply and I probably won‘t be ordering from them again. I‘m not willing to chance it as they apparently don‘t see anything wrong with a good ole bait and switch. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Chrys I will consider this a warning and not order from them either. Readers buy specific covers, as a bookseller they should realize that 5y
Emily92Bibliophile Something similar happened with me with ThriftBooks. They offered a paperback copy of a new book, and I bought it, and they sent me an ARC. I told them those aren‘t supposed to be sold, and their book options were misleading and untruthful 😳They reimbursed me but when I asked if they are going to continue to sell ARCS they didn‘t reply. 5y
ValerieAndBooks That is a bummer. It's been a while since I've ordered from book depository, but almost every time I did was because I wanted a specific cover that wasn't USA. Looks like they're slipping 😪. Also -- I've gotten the switcheroo from bookoutlet a few times, but they now state that their covers may be different than pictured (maybe they always said that?) and they're cheap anyways. Hopefully they'll all catch on that covers are important to us!! 5y

Kalalalatja That‘s a shit answer, but the same as I got. I don‘t know why they lessen the importance of covers 🙄 5y
Reviewsbylola It‘s such bullshit. @Kalalalatja At least they made it very clear not to buy from them if I want a specific item. Now I know and it will def curb my BD buying habits! 5y
Reviewsbylola I‘ve never had that problem from BO but that‘s good to know. With the bad luck I‘ve had recently I‘ll def be keeping it in mind. @ValerieAndBooks 5y
Reviewsbylola 😆😆 That‘s pretty wild they would sell ARCs. @Emily92Bibliophile 5y
Reviewsbylola I had this issue twice this weekend (the other one was a bookseller on Abe Books) and both of them spun it around on me that I should be cross checking ISBNs. No effing way. Just display the correct cover image. It‘s not that difficult. @Chrys 5y
Lizpixie Both BD & AbeBooks have gone downhill since they were bought by amazon. I had no issues with them before that, since the sale I‘ve had twice the wrong covers by BD & abebooks sent me a pretty banged up paperback when the listing was for a great condition one.😡 5y
BookwormM I am always careful on EBay as a lot of sellers say you might not get the book in the image my real issue was when buying a translated book I emailed to ask if the book was the English translation they came back that they couldn‘t confirm that needless to say I purchased elsewhere 5y
Redwritinghood I‘ve stopped buying from them too. They don‘t seem to be well organized or have a good inventory tracking system. I had a big issue with them a few months ago and now I‘m done. 5y
Mdargusch That‘s so disappointing. 😠 5y

WtaFFFF Book Depository! I ordered the copy on the left and received the one on the right. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ So not cool. Probably not a big deal to some but it is a big deal to me. The one I received is ugly. #sorrynotsorry

Has this happened to anyone else?! It makes me nervous to order from them.

TrishB Haven‘t had with BD but have had with others! 5y
Kalalalatja I have experienced the same. The reason I got was something like, they can‘t be sure which copy they send because of their suppliers. I think I got the option to return it cost free, and get my money back 5y
Sace Ugh! So sorry! That is an ugly cover. 5y

MamaGina Yes, I had it happen once. Annoying but I didn‘t pursue a refund that time. I did get a refund when I received a book that had the correct cover but the pages were from a completely different title! They did quickly issue the credit. It‘s frustrating though, booksellers should understand the importance of wanting a specific edition! 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes!! I would be annoyed!! 5y
LeahBergen Grrrrr! 😡😡😡 5y
BarbaraBB Yes it has happened to me more than once and it can be frustrating (it turned out better than expected too sometimes). You could try their customer service, they are very generous and understanding! 5y
Lizpixie It‘s happened to me from them as well. I ordered a SE of Valley Of The Dolls with pink edges & got a plain paperback instead. Since Amazon bought them they‘ve gone downhill😠 5y
batsy Yes, I've had that issue with Book Depository (because it's literally the only place I order most of my books from) and they've always been quite accommodating with questions. But usually it's for the reasons @Kalalalatja mentioned. Also I think sometimes an edition is reprinted with a new cover and this info is not conveyed to booksellers? So they don't update their database. 5y
Susannah That‘s never happened to me with Book Depository, but I would be furious if it did. I had no idea they had a history of sending incorrect editions. 😒 5y
Mdargusch Bait and switch! They obviously don‘t understand how many of us order books for their covers. 5y

So good! I am loving the voice and tone of this thoughtful cataloguing of the carryings-on of an 18th-century French engineer digging up a cemetery..,

The writing is quite good and the underlying true event is interesting, but the story sprawled a bit so I lost focus occasionally. It‘s really character development with not much of a plot line to drive it forward. (I‘m okay with that in general, but in this case it seemed to meander.)

MrsMalaprop I pretty much agree with you on this one. Read it a couple of years ago. A so-so to a pick for me. 😊 6y

It‘s dawned on me why I audio-book so much. 💡 Missing is the dirty sheet pan on the other side and full dishwasher. 🙃

#reallife

Burghbookaddict Every Sunday I tell myself "ok, I'm gonna have the kitchen cleaned up every night before I go to bed this week" and then its Thursday and there's a plate/bowl tower in my sink and I don't have any clean spoons. ? 6y
Tamra @BurghBookAddict oh yes, exactly. I‘m pulling silverware out of the dishwasher for breakfast. 😜 6y
Cathythoughts Great stuff.. the audio is great for this 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 6y

TheBookAddict It still looks like a lovely kitchen. I‘m jelly 😆. I also love audiobooks for that reason, makes chores enjoyable and a breeze. 6y
Thousand-Lives Ha yes! I was just thinking the same thing earlier today when I was putting away a huge pile of laundry. Can‘t imagine doing chores without an audiobook! 6y
CouronneDhiver Looks like a big kitchen! In ours, if you cook one meal for one person, you have to do the dishes... no counter space! Lol 6y
Tamra @CouronneDhiver the bigger the space, the bigger the mess. 😑 I lived with 2 ft of counter space for decades and honestly I still use just 2 ft to prep in. The rest of the space is for dirty dishes! 6y
Tamra @Thousand-Lives I am amazed how long it took me to discover the beauty of audio! 6y
Tamra @TheBookAddict thank you, and totally yes! 6y
Tamra @Cathythoughts 🙌🏾 6y
Tamra By the way, it‘s not any better now because I have dinner prep mess in it. 6y

I read this book a few years ago and I think it really deserves a re read as I don't think I fully absorbed it when I read it. I also gave a copy to a friend as I found myself with 2, and while she was in Paris she went to the site the book is based on. She sent me a few photos and they're all horrifically fascinating. Our relationship with our dead is a strange one.

BethM That sounds awesome. 7y

A great quick read about the removal of the cemetery 'Les Innocents' and transfer of the bones to the Catacombs of Paris at the end of the 18th century. Nala particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the cat, Ragoût! ? #catsoflitsy

Trying out vanillapen 😊. This quote resonated with me, I'm trying to figure out how to explain why, but it won't fit in 451 characters! In short: We're all shaped by our pasts, but more so by our own versions of our pasts. Not just what you experienced, but how you experienced it and how you think about it now. If you could erase the memory or forget it, does it change who you are?

KVanRead So true. 8y
