pickI completely understand why Llosa won the Nobel prize! This was just amazing. The prose, the characters, the story and the translation were just *chef‘s kiss*
This mixes the sweet, naive, nostalgic love story of a male student and a woman who is called his aunt but is NOT his blood aunt (he has to explain that a lot), mixed in with the dramatic radio stories that surround them in Peru. It reminded me of Jane the virgin in some ways!

so-soIt was so easy to fall in love the characters especially Aunt Julia and Pedro Camacho. Aunt Julia was adorable, optimistic and very lovable. I wouldn't be surprised that Marito fell in love with her. I cannot say the same for Pedro Camacho. He is very talented and very hard-working but a bit crazy even before he really got crazy. He's just like one of the characters in his serials. I would love to read more Llosa. He's a really great storyteller.
pickAbsolutely loved the mix between the radio series and the story about Mario. Really enjoyed this book and found it clever how he managed to follow the style of Pedro Camacho as his mind faltered. Amazing!
Holy bifocals Batman!! Smallest. Print. Ever. You can't really tell in the photo, but trust me, it's the smallest print I have ever seen in a mass market paperback.

so-soMixed feelings about this one. Aside from the rampant racism and misogyny (it's set in the 50s so attitudes of the times prevail I guess) it was kind of a fun read. Like a South American "How I Met Your Mother", but the ending left me a little flat -not horribly bad - just dull. Bob was not impressed.

Loved this and appreciated Sudden Death. Another favourite which is back in Adelaide is The Informers by Juan Gabriel Vasquez, & I'm keen to read Reputations by him.
