This is a tough one, to read or discuss. Here‘s an auto-fiction which likely aligns with the author‘s own youth leading up to/following a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Brief, raw chapters capture the pain & confusion surrounding turbulent months and years where she partied hard with her friends, alienated her parents, regularly hallucinated, and attempted suicide over & over before she‘s medicated and sent away to a school for difficult kids.

It wasn‘t exactly what I expected. I didn‘t realize this was largely autobiographical, Which made some of the graphic self harm and suicidal imagery especially tough, though honest.

This follows the journey of a teenage girl struggling to control and work with her mental health issues and various troubles that come with it and make her feel out of control through much of the story.

This book is intense. I find it easiest to read it a little at a time, rather than to binge it - it helps with digesting the heaviness of the author's experiences.

Is this an easy read? No.

Is it an important one? Absolutely.

I had a hard time with this book at first, simply because the author/main character and I had wildly different high school experiences. But as the book went on, we got to know each other and became friends. The blurred line between author and narrator worked really well, reflecting the speaker‘s fractured and scattered mindset. I can‘t speak to the bipolar rep, but the book seemed honest. #netgalley ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m not sure enjoy is the right word, but it was well written and explored the issues well.

Finished an hour or so ago and just had to have a think. The Plath bookmark very intentionally matches.
I got to about 70 pages and thought there‘s no way this isn‘t personal. Checked out the author and it is a novel based on her own experiences.
It‘s brutal and intense and lots of times you feel like shouting no! There isn‘t really any way a novel about coping with mental illness can be nice is there. But I found it a compelling read and brave.

I wouldn‘t say I‘m enjoying this read because it‘s quite brutal. But it‘s compelling and I can‘t put it down.

Book 1/12 is done! Got my cardio is at the same time! This one was a flat liner, but I think brilliantly written. It reads like a memoir almost, or like you‘re reading Juliet‘s diary the whole time. It‘s choppy, but shows a decent portrayal of a bipolar girls thoughts. Possibly comparable to Girl, Interrupted.. #bfc2 #bookfitnesschallenge

First one to say they‘d like the spare one- it‘s yours!

This was...fine but a little underwhelming. While it‘s a raw and candid account of an adolescent in the throes of mental illness, there lacked a sense of freshness or novelty about this often written about subject. Most compelling to me was not the redundant progression of Juliet‘s life (get high, self-harm, repeat), but the more introspective insights on the horrors of mental illness: that claustrophobia of being unable to escape your own mind.

YESSSSSSSSS. This is one of my most anticipated books of 2019! I loved BLACK CLOUD. Can‘t wait to start reading this tonight. (Note: bedazzled razor blade is mine, not part of the cover. ☺️) 🤘🏻📚❤️
