Mrs Tim of the Regiment
Mrs Tim of the Regiment: The Bloomsbury Group | D.E Stevenson
6 posts | 7 read | 11 to read
Vivacious, young Hester Christie tries to run her home like clockwork, as would befit the wife of British Army officer, Tim Christie. However hard Mrs Tim strives for seamless living amidst the other army wives, she is always moving flat-out to remember groceries, rule lively children, side-step village gossip and placate her husband with bacon, eggs, toast and marmalade. Left alone for months at a time whilst her husband is with his regiment, Mrs Tim resolves to keep a diary of events large and small in her family life. Once pen is set to paper no affairs of the head or heart are overlooked. When a move to a new regiment in Scotland uproots the Christie family, Mrs Tim is hurled into a whole new drama of dilemmas; from settling in with a new set whilst her husband is away, to disentangling a dear friend from an unsuitable match. Against the wild landscape of surging rivers, sheer rocks and rolling mists, who should stride into Mrs Tim's life one day but the dashing Major Morley, hellbent on pursuit of our charming heroine. And Hester will soon find that life holds unexpected crossroads... Mrs Tim of the Regiment is part of The Bloomsbury Group, a new library of books from the early twentieth-century chosen by readers for readers.

A total delight from start to finish. Being the diary of Hester Christie, wife of a mid-ranking army officer between the wars, as she navigates the politics of the Regiment & her neighbours, then enjoys a summer holiday in the Scottish Highlands. I‘m so glad there are 3 more in the series, I need more Hester in my life. Shall I download the other books immediately and look for vintage hardbacks or just order the Furrowed Middlebrow editions?

LeahBergen I loved this one, too! I bought a vintage copy of Mrs Tim but then just bought the others in the Furrowed Middlebrow editions. I‘ve read the first two now. 👍 2y

“But it does seem to me that the people I used to know were more human and wise-like. There was surely less struggle for money and less running after the great ones-who aren‘t so very great after all‘s said and done. There was less vulgarity and we were content with simpler pleasures.”

The timeless nostalgia of debating old days vs. new days. I adore this book and it makes me want some old days right now. Stevenson is such a comfort read. ❤️

LeahBergen I adore these books! Lovely photo. ❤️❤️ 4y

Next up!

I‘m just starting this witty 1932 novel, told in diary form, about the domestic “ups and downs” of a British military wife. Even better? My husband‘s name is Tim. 😂😂

In the words of Winnie-The-Pooh, “it‘s a rather blustery day”. The wind has been whistling through the eaves, and raindrops have been lashing the windows since 8AM. We‘ve had a very mild winter, so this sudden storm has caused quite the excitement. All I want to do is curl up under layers of cosy blankets, with a hot latte (extra froth) and my current read. (...continued in comments)

catebutler I‘m reading, ‘Mrs Tim of the Regiment‘, for a readalong. I‘m nearing the end, and I highly recommend, if you‘re in need of a good laugh, lifting of spirits and/or enjoy the writing of Elizabeth von Arnim or E. M. Delafield. The book is written as journal entries and follows the hilarious antics of Hester Christie, the wife of a British Army officer. 6y
catebutler Determined to keep a diary of events both large and small in her family life, Hester allows the reader to follow along as each new drama of dilemmas occurs. Stevenson is such a fabulous writer, intelligent, funny with beautiful imagery sprinkled throughout. According to the author‘s foreword, the novel was written as a request of a friend. 6y
catebutler Who borrowed Stevenson‘s personal diary, so her daughter who was engaged to be married to an officer in a Highland Regiment, would know what to expect. When the journal was handed back, Stevenson‘s friend said she must write a book based upon her diary, it was that entertaining. After much thought, D. E. Stevenson decided to give it a go. This reader is delighted she did! 6y
