Sydney Noir | John Dale

Australia can no longer be held back from the Akashic Noir Series; herein, Sydney reveals itself to be a world-class hub of noir. From John Dale's introduction to the book: Nothing lasts in Sydney, especially good fortune: lives are upturned, shops are sold, roads dug up, trees and houses knocked down, premiers discarded, and entire communities relocated in the name of that economic mantra - growth and progress. Just when you think the traffic can't get any worse and the screech of the 747s descending over your roof can't get any louder and the pavements can't get any dirtier, along comes a wild electrical storm that batters the buildings and shakes the power lines and washes the garbage off the streets and you stand, sheltered under your broken brolly in the center of Sydney, admiring this big beautiful city... What never changes, though, is the hustle on the street. My father was a detective in the vice squad shortly after the Second World War, and he told stories of busting SP bookies in Paddington and Surry Hills, collaring cockatoos stationed in the laneways of South Sydney, and arresting sly-groggers. Policing back then was hands-on for the poor and hands-off for the rich. Crime and Sydney have always been inseparable: a deep vein of corruption runs beneath the surface of even its most respectable suburbs. Includes brand-new stories by: Kirsten Tranter, Mandy Sayer, John Dale, Eleanor Limprecht, Mark Dapin, Leigh Redhead, Julie Koh, Peter Polites, Robert Drewe, Tom Gilling, Gabrielle Lord, Philip McLaren, P.M. Newton, and Peter Doyle

Mehso-so

I love this series, but like any short story anthology not all of the stories in each one resonate with me. This one was a little more miss than hit for me personally, but there were still some really great stories. Finished this one up during a power outage today thanks to the ice storm. We made a blanket pile on the couch lol.

#BookMail Pt21 This is yet another #blameitonlitsy purchase, one of many. So, thank you @DGRachel for giving me another series to obsess over. All 70+ books in the series👍I love Noir, but most is set in places like LA, NYC or Chicago, and there are books set in those cities in the Akashic Noir series, so it‘s amazing to have a book of Noir set in my hometown. With short stories by Mandy Sayer, Jim Dale, Gabrielle Lord & more.

DGRachel I hope you enjoy it! 6y
Cathythoughts Sounds perfect 👍🏻. Look forward to your thoughts 6y

#decemberwrapup I finished 21 books in December, ending my year on a really high note with the tagged book. Goodreads year in review isn‘t updating correctly, I guess because I finished so close to midnight, so I won‘t share that graphic, but these are my December reads. Favs for the month are both the Akashic Noir collections and Holy Ghost by John Sandford. Happy New Year, Litsy!

Lizpixie How was the Sydney Noir? I‘m really gonna have to find a copy🇦🇺 6y
DGRachel @Lizpixie I really enjoyed it. It was dark and twisty. 6y

Pickpick

I did it! Finished my 179th read for 2018 just before midnight and what a way to finish the year! Five-stars for this diverse collection of brilliant short stories. Trigger warnings for all the things except animal cruelty, but if you‘re a fan of dark, gritty crime stories, then you should know this is not going to be a feel-good collection. DGRachel @LauraBeth Happy New Year to you, Bitsy, and the rest of your family! (Bailey‘s snoring, otherwise I‘m sure she would send kisses, too) 🥳🥳 6y
CrowCAH Happy New Year! I‘m going to follow your lead and record the temps and then crochet something based on the color thread per ten degrees. I just wanted to verify that you record each days temp? 6y
DGRachel @CrowCAH Happy New Year! Yes! I set up a bullet journal spread with a box for each day of the year and recorded that day‘s high temperature and then I colored in the square once I crocheted that row, so I didn‘t lose my place. I used weatherunderground.com for each day‘s high temperature. Good luck! Please share your progress!! 6y
CrowCAH @DGRachel great, thanks so much; I‘m looking forward to this project!!! 🧶 6y

I *might* have squealed when I saw the package from Akashic Press in my mailbox today. Oh, who am I kidding? I flapped my arms and ran into the house from the mailbox squealing the entire way. 😂🤣😂🤣 I‘ve been dying to try the Akashic Noir series and am so excited to get this through LibraryThing‘s Early Reviewers program.

Freespirit I have heard good reviews of this book 😊 6y
