3) I don't really have a favourite trope. Locked Room is good. I also like when there's a "team" of "detectives" where each member brings a unique POV and set of skills.

I really enjoyed this book, set in England in 1781. It revolves around slavery. Tad Archer is an abolitionist and is missing. Captain Harry Corsham tries to find him and is then involved in the British slaving industry and its nastiness. I learnt a lot about slavery through this book.

Couldn't put it down!

Tad Archer was investigating in the slaving port of Deptford. He was certain his findings could end the British slave trade. He dug too deep and now his best friend Harry has to pick up not only Tad's investigation, but also find out who killed and mutilated Tad.

A historical crime novel with subplots that are all intertwined. Hard to believe it's a debut novel.

Went to the Deptford Literature Festival yesterday and picked up 2 books. One was Tales from the City and is a collection of short stories from Londoners on themes of Food, Climate and Nature and was free from the festival 🥰 The second is Blood & Sugar, an historical crime fiction set in Deptford in the 1700s 🥰 Looking forward to tucking into both at some point! 📚

I've struggled with this book for a couple of weeks now and finally have given up. A Captain's friend is murdered and as no one else is investigating the Captain decides to investigate himself. Full of descriptive text to hide the fact that there is not much of a story, it is far to similar to other books that I have read. No matter where the Captain visits he manages to gain lots of information from people who miraculously have fantastic memories

#MarvellousMay @Andrew65 Just squeezed in 3 books to the challenge with this historical crime novel. Certainly the history was interesting as set in 1781 it centres around the slave trade, abolition, and the profits that mean lives of the poor victims are little more than cargo borrowing from a real sea borne atrocity. A former soldier investigates his friends death in the Deptford docks. A few stutters prose + plotwise but a page turner.

A well written historical murder mystery set in Deptford being one of the English terminus of the Triangle Trade (goods to Africa, Slaves to the Americas, Sugar to Europe) where a reforming lawyer has been murdered. Our protagonist is an old friend of the reformer and hero of the revolutionary war who finds a conspiracy stretching to the heights of society and a murderer determined to ensure details will never come to light.

A page turning murder mystery that vividly brings to life 18th century London docks & the horror of the slave trade. It lays bare the political involvement in human trafficking, the hypocrisy of the establishment and the deep scares that are left by such barbaric exploits. What irked me - was the absence of women taking agency of their lives, having read this book you might think all London women at that time were devoid of independence & action.

Rainy Friday afternoon, tucked up in my favourite chair with socks and a fleece on ( it‘s summer soon, right?!) Loving the pace of this book - is a real page turner... but where are all the strong women??

I have an hour that is all mine... I‘m going to spend it amongst the dirt strewn cobbles and tattooed sailors of 18th Century Depford. 👏🏼

I‘m only a few chapters in - but this feels like the perfect book for my currently unsettled brain! It‘s swift moving and chapters end with those little sentences of intrigue which keeping reading just one more page!

Haven‘t even got as far as Chapter 1 and there‘s been three maps already - that‘s a good sign! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

#unpopularopinion I honestly can‘t quite understand all those great reviews this book has. I was convinced I found an incredible story, I was wrong. While the story is interesting, well-researched, and deals with a tough subject, the writing (quite jarring), some authorial choices (don‘t get me started), and some plot holes left me puzzled and irritated. Not to mention the ending, which is trite and doesn‘t make much sense.

‘Light‘ reading on the tube. 🤓 Seems interesting so far, though the writing seems a bit off at times (or maybe it was just me reading it on the tube). Let‘s see how it goes. 😊

Set in 1781 Deptford, where a body hangs on the dock, tortured & branded with a slavers mark.Captain Harry Corsham is begged by the sister of his abolitionist friend to find out what‘s happened after he disappeared while investigating a slavers ring. Has great reviews so fingers crossed!
