She stood at danger?s threshold-- then love beckoned her in. In the shelter of her country cottage, Sara Feilding puts pen to paper to create dreams. But curiosity has enticed the prim, well-bred gentlewoman out of her safe haven--and into Derek Craven?s dangerous world. A handsome, tough and tenacious Cockney, he rose from, poverty to become lord of London?s most exclusive gambling house--a struggle that has left Derek Craven fabulously wealthy, but hardened and suspicious. And now duty demands he allow Sara Fielding into his world--with her impeccable manners and her infuriating innocence. But here, in a perilous shadow-realm of ever-shifting fortunes, even a proper "mouse" can be transformed into a breathtaking enchantress--and a world-weary gambler can be shaken to his cynical core by the power of passion. . .and the promise of love. "A Real Joy . . . Hard To Put Down" -- Kathleen E. Woodiwiss "Wonderfully Refreshing . . . I Enjoyed It From Beggining To End." -- Johanna Lindsey "Lisa Kleypas is more than just a fine writer of rich and passionate historical romances, she?s a genuine phenomenon." -- Heart to Heart

Another Kleypas. Another rec from well, every person I know who reads historical romance. There is a Derek Craven day and when I said I hadn‘t read it. My friend said go buy it now! 🤣 here we are. I‘ll read hopefully soon.
I‘m trying to reacquaint myself with my TBR while on a book buying ban for the month.

Not a bad book, but Not For Me. Forever grateful I came to romance in the same lackadaisical way I come to most things. If I had googled the "classics" of the genre I probably wouldn't have stayed.

But seriously, they spend SO MUCH of the book either not interacting or apart??? I like it when the leads interact in a romance?????

In the interest of fairness, I will say that I no longer think this book dislikes -just- poor people, though to be fair nothing with the rich has quite approached the widespread contempt the book had for the poor person riot. However, no one knows when a book is fiction!! Fools across all classes!

Truly, I don't come to books people love trying to be a contrarian asshole (and I'm not even halfway through this one yet), but... this is just not working for me. I'll keep going, but MAN. Some notes:
1) is Craven getting old timey pegged or what??
2) I am endlessly irritated by narratives that just discard people's glasses
3) does this book hate poor people??? Waiting to see how this develops, but some of it feels reaaal condescending

I think this was a reread for me but it wasn‘t in Goodreads so I‘m not sure. Either way this was a delightful regency romance with the perfect “Hero who would steal your F*%#+*^% spectacles”. In fact he actually steals her spectacles. Both protagonists are great, this is part of a series but works fine as a standalone. #romantsy #FatedMatesReadingChallenge

Julsmarshall I‘m reading this right now! At work, because it is sooo good! 5y

#unpopularopinion time, but I didn‘t much care for this. The Lady Ashby storyline was just too much to believe, and while Derek Craven was smolderingly hot, the way Sara just accepts his previous horndog ways bugs me. Didn‘t help that my copy had some serious typos (every “c-l” became a “d”, so she ducked her tongue, and “it‘s” became “if s”) that were terribly distracting.

Started the first novel for #fatedmates second season this morning. Also, missing Litsy...I've just been too overwhelmed by life stuff for reviews.

Final also, cuddling a black cat while wearing a black tshirt makes for a rather uninteresting picture...

I am late to the Lisa Kleypas party - when I was getting back into romance she didn‘t pop onto my radar. But I‘ve been backtracking through her backlist very slowly - and YES, Derek Craven is a LOT. I can see why Sarah MacLean cites this book as a favorite and where her Scoundrels and Bastards come from. Sara is pretty fun and it was nice to see her decide that she‘s not going to be a “good girl” and confine herself to a predefined role.

balletbookworm Now I need to read Lily and Alex‘s book. 5y
bunny I'll have to check this one out! I just read (and loved) my first Lisa Kleypas too. 5y

This book is an excellent example of everything a regency romance should be. A self made hero and an enterprising heroine. This book is older, but you‘d never know it wasn‘t written last year. Kleypas does a great job.

Somehow, this was the first time I read this classic and it holds up. Derek Craven, self-made mogul and London casino owner, finds love with a small town writer. The Derek Craven fanclub knows what‘s up.

I hate this cover, but I loved this book! I think because it‘s so plain and not your typical romance cover.

I absolutely loved this story. I am officially obsessed with Sara and Derek. It was so hard for Sara to break through Derek‘s walls, that it was a great love story.

I am now in love with Lisa Kleypas and understand why this was one of Sarah MacLean‘s favorite romance novels!

Bookzombie This is one of my favorites! Derek is one of the most memorable characters. 6y

#AGameOfFavorites - Romance Author

Sarah MacLean is my all time favorite Romance author! It was really tough to choose my favorite book of hers. (Also, I haven‘t read her latest book yet).

I picked Never Judge A Lady by Her Cover. The last book in the Rule of Scoundrel series. I love Chase‘s story 💕

Her favorite romance novel and the novel she recommends first is the tagged book. I immediately put it on my TBR!

I saw that the romance community was asked what the best Kleypas book was and it was torn down the middle between Dreaming Of You and my personal favorite Devil in Winter so of course I had to pick this one up and check out this Derek Craven fellow for myself. I admit this was a great book and Craven was very swoon worthy😍 he‘s still no St Vincent but probably a close second😏😉⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CoverToCoverGirl I loved both of those books! And just about everything she‘s written 😊 7y

This is one of my favorites of Lisa Kleypas (there are many) and what can I say about Derek Craven? He can melt the panties off of any woman and I loved Sara, she really wanted to know more about Derek, even though he thought Sara was too good for him. Definitely a really good read. He is one of my favorite male characters of Lisa Kleypas books.

This book features the innocent love between a difficult cockney and a lovable country maid, which is special in a way that there are no dukes to be thrown into the equation like other HR does. Dramatic plot but it is all well done under LK's hands. God, Derek's confession was so d'awwww.

LukewarmSiren I finished this last night. What a hottie!!! Great romance! 8y

My very first romance... personally recommended to me by a bestselling romance author as we waited in line to have Margaret Atwood sign our copies of The Handmaid's Tale. Wish me luck!

jpmcwisemorgan I've read romances probably before I should have. My mom disliked them and I wasn't supposed to read them but in a small town there weren't always a lot of options at the library. They are certainly more sophisticated now and there's generally a genre for everyone. Enjoy! 8y

Another great story from Lisa Kleypas. Derek Craven is starved for love and Sara Fielding is yearning for it as well. Their dynamic together shouldn't work but it just fits perfectly. Sparks fly. Not my fav of hers but def worth reading.

Otherworld_Library I started reading Lisa because of you! Even though only one book in her new series has come out, it feels a lot like the Hathaways. Which makes me happy. The Gambler series was okay, but not my favorite either. 9y
