Green Mill Murder: A Phryne Fisher Mystery
Green Mill Murder: A Phryne Fisher Mystery | Kerry Greenwood
33 posts | 51 read | 25 to read
Phryne Fisher is doing one of her favorite things dancing to the music of Tintagel Stone s Jazzmakers at the Green Mill, Melbourne s premier dance hall. And she s wearing a sparkling lobelia-colored georgette dress. Nothing can flap the unflappable Phryne especially on a dance floor with so many delectable partners. Nothing but death, that is. The dance competition is trailing into its last hours when suddenly a figure slumps to the ground. Phryne, conscious of how narrowly the weapon missed her own bare shoulder, back, and dress, investigates. Phryne follows the deadly trail into the dark smoky jazz clubs of Fitzroy, into the arms of eloquent strangers, and finally into the sky, as she uncovers a complicated family tragedy from the Great War and the damaged men who came back from ANZAC cove. Greenwood s series, thanks to its sparkling evocation of how the 1920s roared Down Under, manages to stand apart from the crowd. Anyone who hasn t discovered Phryne Fisher by now should start making up for lost time.

Phryne sets out to solve a disappearance and a murder and in the process takes her plane out to the mountains in Australia (near Talbotville). I enjoy the series mainly because of the historical setting e.g. the Green Mill was an actual dance hall in Melbourne.

My third finish for #SuperSeptember. The fifth book in the Phryne Fisher series and we have a murder in a jazz club to start the action. There is also a plane flight to the Australian Alps and a visit to a hermit in the mountains.

As always Phryne is tenacious, courageous and full of lust. I enjoy these romps and look forward to the next in the series.

Andrew65 Great 👏👏👏 I need to get back to this series. 2y
Mollyanna @Andrew65 Thanks. They are quick reads, usually around 200 pages. 2y

Bk26 of June & Bk8 of #LittenListen is done! A reread of the 5th Phryne novel on audiobook. I love the audio versions, it gives the books that Aussie flavour, the narrator is perfect. Phryne is dancing with Charles Freeman when a marathon dancer drops dead at her feet. When Charles goes missing, she‘s hired by his mother to find him, which leads to flying her Gypsy Moth into the Victorian Alps looking for his brother. #phryneappreciationclub

JazzFeathers The first l read and still one of my favourite. 3y

This time Phryne‘s witnessing of a murder during a dance marathon leads her to investigate the blackmailing of gay men and to hunt for a missing shellshocked son/brother who doesn‘t wish to be found.

Another winner in my #PhryneMarathon This is one of my favourites, the descriptions of the Australian Alps is just so beautiful. I could definitely live in Vic‘s hut, out there in the great silence. As long as I had my books & tea, I could live in solitude quite happily. The depiction of Vic‘s shell shock also rang true, my uncle is a Vietnam Vet who has PTSD which I witnessed as a child. So sad what they all went through. All up another 5⭐️ read.

Up next in my #PhryneMarathon is The Green Mill Murder. Phryne is at the Green Mill dancing with Charles Freeman when a man drops dead on the dance floor. When Charles goes missing before the cops get there, it turns out the dead man has been blackmailing him & now he‘s a prime suspect in the murder. Phryne is hired by his mother to find him and prove him innocent, but the Freeman‘s are not as clean as they appear. #phryneappreciationclub

Book 2 completed for #24b4monday

Not much to say about Phryne that I haven't already! I feel like I have to read one for every readathon. She's fun, modern, and gets into lots of trouble. This one did seem a bit more tame than usual, but it was still a good read.

I love Phryne Fisher. I don‘t know what to say about these books anymore except they are delightful. Phryne is working on solving a murder while also searching for a missing army veteran, and does it with F.L.A.I.R.

I need a good book recommendation! I just abandoned Ngaio Marsh's Overture to Death because I could not relate to any of the characters. Before. I finished Kerry #Greenwood's The Green Mill Murder, Michelle #MacNamara's I'll be gone in the dark, and binge read Rhys #Bowen's Lady Georgiana Rannoch series.

I'm open for mysteries, but could also switch genres again to a good YA (does not have to be new!) or something else completely #recommendsday

CaitZ Have you read Jacqueline Winspear's 6y
CaitZ Or Amy Stewart's 6y
stackednpainted @CaitZ I tried Jacqueline Wi spear years ago and did not get into the book at all. Maybe I should give it a try again... I'll check into Girl Waits With Gun as I haven't heard of it even:O 6y

#BookMail Pt1 I now have the whole series in the Art Deco covers finally. They‘re all so beautiful, it‘s hard to pick a favourite but Blood And Circuses & Murder And Mendelssohn are two that I really love. Story wise though, this one, Murder In Montparnesse & Dead Mans Chest are my favourites to read. Highly recommended, the books are so much better than the tv series📺👎📖👍 #phryneappreciationclub

Texreader Gorgeous cover. I can understand why you wanted a complete set! 6y
LauraBytheBook Hmmm I‘ve only read the first 2-3 so far. I will admit I love the Jack and Phryne storyline from the show so I‘ve found the books a bit disappointing. Maybe I should read a few more and give them another shot. 6y
Lizpixie @KnitNread definitely keep reading! Once you get to Ruddy Gore she has a new lover that I think is better than Jack. And I do love Phryne & Jack in the show, I just think Phryne & Lin Chung are a great couple.👍 6y

Continuing to make my way through the Phryne Fisher books this year. Very much enjoyed this one, about a murder in a dance hall, which ended up with a hermit and some very temperamental musicians.

I‘m on book 5 in my reread of the Phryne Fisher series via audiobook and loving every minute of it! I encourage you to give the audiobooks a go, as the narrator Stephanie Daniel is amazing. This was more enjoyable this time around as well. The audiobook makes you feel like you are right there with all of the wonderful characters. I highly recommend this series. 4.5⭐️

LegosAndPajamas @Pamwurtzler I have! Its a little different from the books. But its tons of fun and the outfits Miss Fisher wears are fantastic! 7y
Lynnsoprano Love the shows, and I really want Phryne‘s wardrobe (also the figure to wear it😂) But It‘s true, there‘s a difference between the books and the show. Both good, just different. (edited) 7y

#FallIntoBooks #day21 #SetInFaveEra I love the Jazz Age,that period in between the wars with its fashion, Art Deco, music and the celebration of being alive after the horrendous death toll of WWI & the Spanish Flu Epidemic. I adore books set in this era, which is why I'm in the #phryneappreciationclub & #christiecrimeclub plus some newer authors like Nicola Upson,Carola Dunn & Sulari Gentill.Give me a cloche hat, a string of beads & a trumpet solo.

JazzFeathers Lol! I'm in those clubs too 😁 l've been resesrching the 1920s (both American and European, such similar and yet such different experience) gor years, for my own stories. It's an era that, in many respects, reminds ne of our own times 7y

BellaBookNook I want to read this. I absolutely adore the series. Have you watched the series? If so, are they similar? 8y
JazzFeathers @BellaBookNook l've watched only part of the series so far, and l'm loving it. Incidently, l've also watched the episode of the Green Mill Murder. The book is deeper in scope and character study, but the TV episode is very faithful overall. These are good stories any medium you chose to enjoy them ;) 8y
BellaBookNook I discovered the series in Netflix and binged watch them all except for last episode. I wish they would make another season but the lead actress has been talking up so many other offers so I'm unsure if they will continue. I definitely will get some of the books. Thanks. 8y

I have never really listened to jazz apart from when my dad's shuffle happens to come across some. But darn, I want to hear Nerine from this book.

I think I liked Tintagel more the first time I read it. This time I found him almost creepy. Dedication to art is all well and good, but not to the extent of concealing murder.

Finished Bk2 of this anthology,The Green Mill Murder. I have to say that Charles in the book version is very much a nastier piece of work than naive Charles in the tv series. I really loved this, Phryne is always amazing but the level of research the author put into Bert & Cec's WWI experiences to make them feel real has to be applauded, you could see the Gallipoli/ANZAC experience as they were talking, it was so clear. Well done. Lest We Forget

JazzFeathers Just finished this book myself, the first l've read of his series. Beautifully researched and written. All the characters are fantastic 8y

Onto book 2 in this anthology, The Green Mill Murder. Phryne Fisher is dancing at The Green Mill, a speakeasy in Melbourne, when a fellow dancer drops dead at her feet. When her dance partner, and a member of the band she becomes involved with, come to the polices attention as suspects, she whips out her detecting skills to find the real killer. Love Phryne, love the Jazz Age & love that this is Australian fiction.🇦🇺
