Once a Midwife: A Hope River Novel | Patricia Harman
10 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 16 to read
Welcome back to Hope River in New York Times bestselling author Patricia Harmans newest novel as midwife Patience Hester, along with her family and friends, face the challenges of the home front during World War II. The women of Hope River trust midwife Patience Hester, whose skill in delivering babies is known for miles around. But though the Great Depression is behind them, troubles are not, for Europe is at warand it can only be a matter of time before the U.S. enters the fray. And while some are eager to join the fight, Patiences husband, Daniel, is not. Daniel is a patriotbut he saw too much bloodshed during the First World War, and has vowed never to take up arms again. His stance leaves Patience and their four children vulnerableto the neighbors who might judge them, and to the government, who imprison Daniel for his beliefs. Patience must support their family and fight for her husbands release despite her own misgivings. And with need greater than ever, she must also keep her practice running during this tumultuous timerelying on generous friends, like Bitsy, who has returned to Hope River, stalwart neighbors, and her own indomitable strength to see them all through.

I did it you guys! Through the magic of audiobooks and with the power of public transportation I was able to pass 24 hours on a work day. Plus I was in a bad mood about working today, but was rewarded with a gorgeous rainbow out my office window. The tagged book is okay, but not really readathon material if you know what I mean. I‘m going to put it aside for something more unputdownable. #24b42020 #elfies #wintergames

marleed Some people dream about winning the lottery! I dream about the day a publisher draws my name from goodreads for a free book! ...Okay, maybe I dream about a lottery win, too! 5y
RhianJMartin @marleed I hope you win soon (lottery, Goodreads, or both)! 🙂 I find the more consistently I enter on Goodreads, the more often I'm selected. I had to enter a ton of them at the start! Best of luck! ☘️📚 5y

Definately a TBR, my second favorite of the year. I totally give this story a 5⭐. Inspiring and upbeat story of a family during WWII. This should be a motion picture story, I hope to see it on screens one day!

Question... anyone has read the other 2 books of this series? Any thoughts? I am really enjoying this book and I'd like to know which of the 3 is the best😁📚

Crazeedi I Read the first 2, I enjoyed the first one the most, second one was Okay. Didnt read third. It's been a couple years. I have on my shelf, have you read? Ican send to you! 6y
mvegabec Hi Diane!! Sure, I am Open to any swaps! I hope you are enjoying the weekend!😁🤗💗 6y
arattyreads I read the first one and liked it a lot better, it was all about the births and went into more detail about what she would do when problems would come up during labor/ birth... with a little bit of her personal life on the side but I really liked the birth aspect of it and there wasn‘t so much of that in “once a midwife” 4y
mvegabec Oh wow @arattyreads I have to read it now!!! IT sounds very interesting!!😉👌👌👌 thanks for the info. 4y

Pickpick

Hope River Series #3. A standalone, but I‘d recommend reading the first two. West Virginia, 1941-42. There is less of the helpful community vibe that permeates the first two books. Daniel brings hardship on Patience and their family when he refuses to support the war effort and register for the draft. It hurts to see these characters that I love stressed and rejected by some community members that disagree with them. Great, painful perspective.

I started the third Hope River book as soon as I finished the second one earlier today. Newly published and IT IS SO GOOD.

Set in West Virginia, 1941, featuring the characters from the previous two books 🙌🏻 🙌🏻 🙌🏻

The information below is from the publisher.
