An interesting story about Langston who has moved from Alabama to Chicago, Illinois during the Great Migration. I loved the father-son relationship in this one. There are lots of great storylines, especially all the time spent in his local library. The only downside is the book was too short.

pickCline-Ransome does an excellent job of capturing the trapped, powerless feeling of dread so common during the middle school years, even without the specific challenges Langston faces, and the experience of finding relief and freedom through literature. The main downside is that the ending is somewhat abrupt. I listened to this with my son and we both felt like the story was just picking up steam when it ended.

I utilized Epic! and selected this book for my students to read. Langston and his father moved from Alabama to Chicago during the Great Migration. Langston struggles to adjust but finds solace in the library and especially, the poetry of Langston Hughes.

I enjoyed this book a lot! This could be used for multiple things in a classroom. I would specifically focus on the great migration!

Both the great migration and Idea of segregation are well presented throughout the book. This is a great story as it tells of a younger g man who was named after the great poet, Langston Hughes and intertwines his life as well.

It‘s better to read in the library. Sitting at my favorite table by the window reading and listening to the sound of other folks turning pages makes me feel like I‘m in a house full of company I don‘t have to talk to.
I think this is such a neat way to incorporate a poet and the Great Migration into one story. It‘s like a self discovery but also a discovery of literature and poetry.
