Camden, North London. A tangled, mangled junction of train lines, roads and waterways. Where minor celebrities hang out with minor criminals and where tourists and moody teenagers mingle. In the heart of Camden, where rail meets road meets leyline, you might find the Arcana Emporium, run by one Alex Verus. He won't sell you a wand or mix you a potion, but if you know what you're looking for, he might just be able to help. That's if he's not too busy avoiding his would-be apprentice, foiling the Dark, outwitting the Light, and investigating a mysterious relic that has just turned up at the British Museum.

From #MountTBR

First book of the Alex Verus series.

Eventually got to this Urban Fantasy about the diviner Alex Verus who has to make sure he's the one to unlock/find an ancient and very powerful magical artifact.

Predictable plot. The secondary characters kept me going.

Low pick.

HeyT It gets better as it goes on because the author has more of a focus. On his blog he also has a series of behind the scenes posts for each book in the series that he wrote after finishing the last installment. 2y
julesG @HeyT Thanks. That's really good to know. 2y

#TBRPile 📚 “It was a slow day, so I was reading a book at my desk and seeing into the future.”

RayHallucinogen I've never used an e-reader. Would you recommend? 4y
Lucy_Anywhere @RayHallucinogen I love my e-reader and would totally recommend it! I live abroad and English books are expensive here. Also it makes travelling much easier as I can take all my books with me wherever I go 4y
RayHallucinogen That's true. I'm only worried if it's eye damaging, so that you can't enjoy reading carelessly. 4y

#BookReport
I managed to do a lot of reading this week. I restarted the Alex Verus series which I think I enjoy even more this time around as well as knocking out another installment of The Expanse. I also finished up my doublespin selection so it was a very productive week. I enjoyed everything I read this week so there were no stinkers in the bunch which was nice.

I love Alex Verus. He‘s not the most powerful mage and his magic type is not combative but he is resourceful. This provides a nice introduction to the world and magic system that I find interesting and want to know more about.

Sierra and I are spending a lazy Sunday reading in bed. I had forgotten so much about this series that I‘m glad I decided to start over from the beginning. My records show I originally read this in 2013 and isn‘t it a scary thought that it‘s been a little over seven years since then?

Christmas #BookHaul gift card edition. My online gift card purchases finally arrived and I‘m so excited. The Earthsea collection has been on my wishlist forever and I read the first six Alex Verus books from the library a few years ago but got distracted by availability. Now I can start over and catch up this year.

Lucy_Anywhere Earthsea is a firm favourite of mine - hope you enjoy them! 4y

Finished this audiobook yesterday. It‘s a fun urban fantasy. The greatest strength is Jacka‘s writing voice; that‘s in spite of the reader not doing the best with the female characters‘ voices (I think he did the best he could with his voice, but I still found it distracting). Definite shades of “Harry Dresden” here. Sadly, that includes a certain amount of misogyny, which is the only reason I‘m on the fence about adding the next book to my TBR.

Nute That‘s awesome cover art! 4y
BillBlume @Nute I‘d be lying if I didn‘t admit the cover was part of what drew me to this book. The covers for the entire series are just gorgeous. 4y

Sunny October day and I decided to go for a little walk to clean out the cobwebs in my head. Stopped by the large book store to have a look at the English books. It's always a disappointment as the selection isn't very broad. Still, I found on interesting book that I'm going to put on my TBR/queue/wallpaper roll/wishlist.

Bought some books for the kids at the thrift shop. A Euro each, and they are mint condition.

London mages, and a giant magic spider— was excited to discover this series. Important caveat: later books in the series have sexual violence. I stopped reading after book 7 because of that.
Image here is another giant magic spider, this one from the Kung Fu Panda series. Now I hear all talking spiders in this voice when reading 😀

Good, but not great. Something dark happened in his past (no details) and now the Council thinks he‘s a problem (because something bad happened to him and he pointed it out to them.) Foresees the future, picks most likely future, good guys and bad guys all want his services. Decent read, but it‘s not inspiring me to continue the series either. There are some interesting nonhuman characters though, which I liked.

This was good without being great. Think "plucky hero against impossible odds" but the odds here are so heavily stacked against him that it's almost distracting. I do love a series though so I will probably read the rest when I need something to snack on. I do hope they get a little stronger and the female characters get a little less patronised as we go.

Started this one this morning. Another Litsy recommendation. Only on page 26, but pretty interesting so far. Cannot wait for this 3 day weekend so I can get non-stop reading time📚

Recommended for people who like urban fantasy of the Jim Butcher type. I'll definitely be looking for the rest of the series!

BookishFeminist Been meaning to try these for a while, I'm glad you like the first one! 8y
ScientistSam @BookishFeminist My brother gave this to me awhile ago and it's been sitting on my tbr pile. I'm really glad I picked it to come on my 4.5 hour bus ride with me! 8y

Enjoying this urban fantasy on the bus. I can see why it's recommended for people who like Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.

Magic and mages in London Town- but a London where magic is out in the open. A loner living in Camden Town (an area I know and love) He's just so damn relatable!!! And the best thing- there's a whole series 😍😍😍🐧

LauraBrook Damn, this sounds good! You sure know how to find awesome books. 😊 8y
drokka I prefer the cover you have than the one on offer here. 8y
Elisa I second @LauraBrook! I'm adding this to my TBR 😃 8y

A So-So leaning towards Pick. This had been on my To Read pile for a while, but I was more intrigued by the Alex Versus character when I though he was female (which probably says a lot more about me!). The plot kept me interested to the end, some of the character stuff annoyed me, but overall I'm interested enough to want to read the next installment.
