Far From You
Far From You | Tess Sharpe
Sophie Winters nearly died. Twice. The first time, she's fourteen, and escapes a near-fatal car accident with scars, a bum leg, and an addiction to Oxy that'll take years to kick. The second time, she's seventeen, and it's no accident. Sophie and her best friend Mina are confronted by a masked man in the woods. Sophie survives, but Mina is not so lucky. When the cops deem Mina's murder a drug deal gone wrong, casting partial blame on Sophie, no one will believe the truth: Sophie has been clean for months, and it was Mina who led her into the woods that night for a meeting shrouded in mystery. After a forced stint in rehab, Sophie returns home to a chilly new reality. Mina's brother won't speak to her, her parents fear she'll relapse, old friends have become enemies, and Sophie has to learn how to live without her other half. To make matters worse, no one is looking in the right places and Sophie must search for Mina's murderer on her own. But with every step, Sophie comes closer to revealing all: about herself, about Mina...and about the secret they shared.

Going Pitchfork style with my ratings from now on. FFY fuses many genres together, but I wouldn‘t recommend this as a mystery/thriller. I recommend this because it has great characters and pure raw emotion. It explores through the struggle of dealing with grief, loss, and substance abuse in an intense way that makes me understand Sophie‘s motives, even though they‘re wrong. 1/5

jeannasser When writing contemporary books with teenagers in a similar situation, it‘s so easy to make the narrator unlikeable or flat (like Mickey from Heroine. I‘m so sorry Mindy fans but i enjoyed this a lot more 😔) However, I LOVED Sophie. She‘s strong and straightforward, and you see her growth not only in the present, but throughout several flashback chapters. 2/5 2y
jeannasser This is not your typical coming of age book. It‘s heartbreaking, romantic, and intense. Going deep into her personal struggles and her dedication to finding out the truth behind her best friend‘s murder, is what kept my hands glued to my physical copy. I wanna call this my read of the year so far, but the only thing that kept me from enjoying this more than Female of the Species is the ending. 3/5 2y
jeannasser The mystery reveal. What was that? It was so out of pocket and it left me scratching my head for a long time in a negative way. Didn‘t feel exciting to finally solve the mystery. It just left a bitter taste in my mouth, but overall I loved how Sophie‘s emotional and physical journey concluded, and THAT‘S what I feel people should focus on when going into this book. 4/5 2y

jeannasser If you‘re looking for a fast-paced coming of age book with sapphic romance and large hints of mystery/thriller, then look no further than Far From You. I will read anything Tess Sharpe writes from now on. 5/5 2y
jeannasser Okay now a spoiler rant…of ALL characters that could‘ve been responsible for the murder and Jackie‘s disappearance…ADAM???? THE COACH??? Those characters didn‘t even have a quarter of page time in the book! I only suspected Adam when they introduced him but I quickly shrugged it off. The whole Coach sleeping with Jackie situation felt so out of pocket. It could‘ve done better in a different book much like Female of the Species, not here 2y
jeannasser Also Aunt Macy was SOOOOOO LIKEABLE and I loved her every time she opened her mouth. There was a perfect balance between her sass and the way she cared so much about Sophie. Why did she only show up for like a quarter of the book? 😭 I feel like she could‘ve done a great job as part of the team and trying to find the killer but oh well 😒 2y

Literally just finished this. I stared at the wall for a solid 10 minutes before getting up to post this. I‘ve read a ton of sad books, but this one made me feel emotions I‘ve never felt after reading a book. I‘m going to get some sleep and write a review tomorrow with a fresh mind. Love you all and please give this a read if you haven‘t yet ❤️

Okay.

I only glanced at the first page because I was looking to grab an LGBT read from my shelf. How do you expect me to put it down after making those the first few sentences?? 😭 59 pages in. Haven‘t been able to put it down.

This one was okay, it's a great book on addiction and overcoming a lot of different things, and living with it. But there were major plot holes that I felt like couldn't be over looked. Also I just didn't think the who done it made a lot of sense in the end, there was no hints or anything through out the book, so it felt like an after thought. Also very young adult, so if you don't like YA, I wouldn't pick this one up. 2 5/5

The book “far from you” by Tess Sharpe is about a girl named Sophie who is a disabled, bisexual, recovering drug addict who had lost her best friend to a shooting. She got into an accident at the age of 14 and left not to injured but was caused by Oxy. After the loss of her friend and drugs being planted on her at the scene Sophie is sent back to rehab after already beating the addiction. This book is very interesting and an easier read.

Nevaehh Sophie‘s bestfriend Mina died in her arms. After Sophie returned back home after rehab she was very motivated to find out what happened to Mina, and who framed her. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes somthing that pulls you in and is interesting. The book is also a noir murder mystery. 4y
MissYaremcio Oooo this sounds like a good one!! Thank you for the review Nevaeh! I was just missing the POV and how it is established! 4/6 4y

This one has all the feels! Pretty hard hitting for a YA book, tackling handicapping injury, addiction, same sex attraction, loss, and more all wrapped up in a double mystery. The mystery wasn't the most astounding, but when coupled with the rest this was a strong piece of fiction (IMO). Would definitely read more by this author.

GypsyKat Sounds really good! 5y

I didn‘t realize this was #YA and wondered why I wasn‘t enjoying it until I reread the description about 2 hours into it. Yeah...nope. Not a reflection on book or author. Just not my jam.

#DNF

IamIamIam Sometimes YA can be satisfying and sometimes it's a harsh reminder that we're not 15 anymore. 😂 6y
cathysaid @IamIamIam You know, now that you say it, I probably would have really enjoyed it at that age. 6y

So after reading the first few pages, I honestly was like wth have I gotten myself into with this book?!... in a good way! It‘s a whirlwind rollercoaster trying to figure out who murdered Sophie‘s best friend, while also diving into secrets revealed through flashbacks. I couldn‘t put this book down. It has some dark areas, but life can get dark at times. I would definitely recommend. 📚❤️✨

My #DiversityDecBingo TBR is all YA. I'm starting to feel like it's one of the only sections in publishing that has the majority of the small percentage of #ownvoices books being published.

I really enjoyed this one. But is it telling of the publishing industry in general that f/f romances in YA rarely either happen or end well?

Nine months. Two weeks. Six days.

That's how long recovering addict Sophie's been drug-free. Four months ago her best friend, Mina, died in what everyone believes was a drug deal gone wrong - a deal they think Sophie set up. Only Sophie knows the truth. She and Mina shared a secret, but there was no drug deal. Mina was deliberately murdered.

LOVED THIS. Absolute favorite LGBTQ YA I've read so far this year. This was an emotionally complex and intriguingly suspenseful murder mystery.
