In the heart of Calcutta lurks a dark mystery.... Set in Calcutta in the 1930s, The Midnight Palace begins on a dark night when an English lieutenant fights to save newborn twins Ben and Sheere from an unthinkable threat. Despite monsoon-force rains and terrible danger lurking around every street corner, the young lieutenant manages to get them to safety, but not without losing his own life. . . . Years later, on the eve of Ben and Sheere's sixteenth birthday, the mysterious threat reenters their lives. This time, it may be impossible to escape. With the help of their brave friends, the twins will have to take a stand against the terror that watches them in the shadows of the night--and face the most frightening creature in the history of the City of Palaces.

I liked this one a bit more than the first book. The ending was a bit too dramatic for me though.
The writing also felt more like the Cemetery of Forgotten Books in this one. 💕

This is one of CRZ's lesser-known books, a YA novel about a group of teenagers about to age out of their orphanage. Set in Calcutta in the 1930s, Ben & Sheere are fighting against an evil that has waited sixteen years to exact on their family. I like that their friends have distinct personalities, but the story isn't bogged down with more info than we need for an effective story.. This had a little less of the beautiful prose I expect from CRZ, ⬇️

I use Amazon sparingly when buying books but in preparation for November's #authoramonth I used a small gift card to buy these used from the marketplace. I had no clue one of them was an ARC. It is in less than very good condition, but I'm willing to overlook it for the probable rarity now in my possession.

Soubhiville Nice! I like the covers. 4y

I have really gotten into the works of Carlos Ruiz Zafón in the past year and this was another brilliant and emotional tale by him. While shorter than the others I have read, it was still a beautiful tale full of gothic touchstones and melancholy. The imagery it conjured in my head while reading was fantastic.

In his second novel Zafon's art of building misterious, lyrical and stunningly beautiful fictional worlds is beginning to blossom. It's not so elaborate yet, as it will be in The Shadow of the Wind, but such quotes make me feel the same light #melancholy and #nostalgia as my favorite #Zafon's works. #childhood #loneliness #Catalan

#QuotsyApril18 Day 9: That crying must be an extra eerie sound if it calls out to a #predator. I think I will have to get back to reading Zafon soon. I haven‘t read this series yet, apparently it is a trilogy.

Haven't posted on Litsy in 2 months because I haven't read in 2 months!!! 😭 It's been a crazy, busy time and I just haven't made reading a priority when I normally do. Trying to figure out what my problem is when I finally pick up Midnight Palace again, read a few pages, and come across this character description that almost perfectly describes my personality. I think it explains a lot! Will try to do better! 🙃

Zafon knows his craft: great to see him channeling Mary Shelley here. Quality description, so vivid!

BookswithTea Love him! Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorites! 9y
IndyHannaJones I love him! Read Marina! So good! So friggen creepy and sad. 9y
Zakia @Hyaeger @BooksTea Shadow of the Wind is def his masterpiece. Isn't Marina the one with the puppets? So creepy. 9y
BookswithTea @Hyaeger @Zakia I have Marina but haven't read it yet! I have read the other two in the "shadow" series (waiting for the supposed fourth book) and one of his other YA - Prince of Mist (I think that's the title) which was also good! 9y
