Book of Dead Philosophers
Book of Dead Philosophers | Simon Critchley
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
In this collection of brief lives (and deaths) of nearly two hundred of the world's greatest thinkers, noted philosopher Simon Critchley creates a register of mortality that is tragic, amusing, absurd, and exemplary. From the self-mocking haikus of Zen masters on their deathbeds to the last words of Christian saints and modern-day sages, this irresistible book contains much to inspire both amusement and reflection.Informed by Critchley's acute insight, scholarly intelligence, and sprightly wit, each entry tells its own tale, but collected together they add up to a profound and moving investigation of meaning and the possibility of happiness for us all.

So I fully meant to get a schedule out for this one this weekend. I‘ve really lost track of time with my strange self discovery adventure, and then I‘ve slept most of this weekend. Anyway, is everyone up for starting this in September? Maybe on the 10th? I think the 3rd would be cutting it close at this point.
Thoughts?

GingerAntics I need to add someone to this list for this book, hopefully someone reminds me of who that was… I think I know how to find it if not. #Philosophy #AdventuresInPhilosophy #DeadPhilosophersSociety

THE WHEEL HAS SPOKEN!!! Well, sort of. I couldn‘t figure out why I didn‘t get “best out of 3” until just now, it was on “fair” mode. So here is what we‘re going to do. Since we suck at voting, I want everyone to rank these three books in the order you would like to read them in. Give me the order you would like to read them in. We will read them all, but in what order?! You let me know what you think…

GingerAntics No idea what it‘s beef with @thebookhippie is after all this time. 2y
TheBookHippie 1. Jewish 2. Islam 3. Virtues and I‘m a problem wherever I go 👀😘 2y

ravenlee What‘s The Virtues? Who‘s the author? 2y
ravenlee I admit to some trepidation at the thought of committing to 500+ pages of Islamic philosophy 😬- life never wants to cooperate on those longer reads! 2y
Chrissyreadit Smallest to biggest 2y
kspenmoll Is it the virtues by John Garvey? Can you tell me who the authors of the text are so I can look them up?There are so many books with similar names. Help! (edited) 2y
GingerAntics @ravenlee oh that is definitely not happening. We have done well with some longer-ish reads, but I think we would all fall apart on that one. Maybe if we could break it into chunks and put other things in between. 1y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I kind of like this order. It‘s somewhat chronological as to the origins of each. 1y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll Craig Boyd. I made individual posts for each so I can easily tag everyone and each of the books. 1y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit Islamic and Virtues are both going to be about 150-200 pages per book. Jewish is about 136. 1y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit smallest to biggest appears to be @TheBookHippie‘s preferred order. Jewish, Islamic, Virtues. 1y
ravenlee @GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll I like the sound of this plan (and the shorter version of the Islamic one). 1y
Chrissyreadit It sounds doable to me. My menopausal brain is foggy after five pages these days. 1y
TheBookHippie Yes! This works!!! 1y
TheBookHippie hoopla has the Jewish one!! 1y
kspenmoll Jewish, Islamic, virtues- like @TheBookHippie idea 1y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit does chocolate or ice cream or anything help, or is it just all over the place? 1y
Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics literally no rhyme or reason it‘s very frustrating 1y
Chrissyreadit Jewish, Islamic Virtues 1y

@TheBookHippie @ravenlee how about this? I don‘t have a hat, but I can create a random-ish outcome.

GingerAntics One spin or best of three? 3y
TheBookHippie 😂😂😂 oh the decisions 😬 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie right? I like best of three, because it gives both books a real chance. If there were more than two books it would be easier to just go with one. 3y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie this is totally how we‘re picking books from now on. 🤣😂🤣 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I‘m for that best of three and yes. This IS the way! 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie the wheel of wisdom has spoken… 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics as I go get my bowl of Cheerios …. The anticipation 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics opens cupboard remembers the baby aka my almost 8 year old grandson left a box of frosted flakes 😂😂 guess what I‘m eating 😬 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie FROSTED FLAKES!!! Gotta love that baby!!! 💙💙💙 3y

Since we are skipping Piglet now, we need to choose our next read(s). Originally, we were going to read How the World Thinks after Piglet. We‘ve also discovered Every Time I Find the Meaning of Life, They Change It which is about past philosophers. We‘ve also found This Life (which some of us are quite excited about) that is more modern philosophy. Some argue it‘s Marxist, but they also seem very conservative, so we may not find that problem.

GingerAntics Plato at the Googleplex was also suggested. It‘s more a defence of philosophy and why it‘s important. What are everyone‘s thoughts on our next read (to begin in the new year) and the reads after that? Voting open now. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I have no idea what it‘s beef is. 3y

Chrissyreadit I am not sure. But I have lots of philosophical thoughts in general I‘m desperate to discuss…. 3y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit lol maybe you should write them all down, send out this magical document and THAT will be our next read. 3y
Chrissyreadit 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 3y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit we can give you some time to gather your thoughts if you‘d like and make it the read after next. 😂🤣😂 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics lord. I‘m banned literally everywhere 😂😵‍💫 3y
TheBookHippie This Life is calling me but I‘ll read anything, clearly. And take notes 😂😅 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie you‘re definitely not banned here! Of course you‘ll take notes. What else would we all be doing. This Life is calling me as well. Of nothing else, it should produce interesting conversations and give us the opportunity to articulate our own spiritual lives which I‘m always game for. Sadly, neither of my libraries have it. I‘m going to have to buy it which is less of a problem if I get this job next week (but I doubt it‘s happening). 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie clearly a new book would make me feel better about that. 🤣😂🤣 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh it‘s dirt cheap on Apple Books. Obviously I deserve this book for going to a job interview last week. 3y
Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics we have a massive teacher shortage here. You could get a job tomorrow. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 😂I‘ve had a week so … 😂 new book it is 😂😂 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics sorry about the job 😝 3y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I don‘t have a teaching certificate, just my masters. That‘s why I worked at a junior college. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I have no real logical reason to say it went badly. It‘s just a feeling. I don‘t know why. Maybe I‘m reading too much into things. I guess we‘ll see if I ever hear from them again. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Me after every interview...... OY 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie at least it‘s not just me… it was the perfect job for me. It was the one job I‘ve applied for since September that I was absolutely confident I had all the qualifications before. There are a lot of life insurance companies looking for Sales people around here, but most of them require a car, even for working from home. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics the job market is just strange right now, in general, everywhere. 3y
ravenlee I‘ve already got the Baggini, so I‘m ready for that one. I can track down whatever else I need to, though. 3y
GingerAntics @ravenlee same. I got everything after we decided because I knew I could lose my job at any point. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie there is all this “”we need people to take jobs,” but then all the jobs are so specific. 3y
TheBookHippie @ravenlee that‘s good with me too. 3y
kspenmoll I will read anything- I have This Life because my son has it, but I can go with whatever works best for all! 3y
kspenmoll @GingerAntics So so sorry about the job hunting- I am thinking the interview might have gone better than you thought… I hope so! Looking for work is such a roller coaster. 3y
kspenmoll @Chrissyreadit I am a newbie at philosophy, so love the idea of your own thinking… a magical document for us! @gingerantics 3y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll it really is such a rollercoaster. It just feels all over the place. The phone interview seemed to go well. I was told they would make an appointment for an in person interview by the next day. I didn‘t hear anything for a week. So of course, in that week I figured I was out of the running. Now I‘m supposed to hear something next week about a decision from the in person interview… we‘ll see. (edited) 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics good grief 😝waiting is awful 3y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie well, the wait is over. It‘s officially official, I did NOT get the job. I fear I‘m going to be selling life insurance very soon. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics ACK. I am so very sorry!!! UGH. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie no biggie. At least they had the courtesy to let me know so I wasn‘t sitting around waiting and wondering. 3y
kspenmoll @GingerAntics I am so so sorry! I was really hoping this would be your job…💜 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @ravenlee @kspenmoll @Chrissyreadit okay just wondering… between This Life and How the World Thinks, is one of the books easier to obtain and are they similarly priced or is one more expensive than the other where you prefer to get your books? (edited) 3y
JaclynW @GingerAntics So sorry to hear you didn't get the job. Keep trying! Hopefully a good fit is coming your way soon! As far as the new books, I will try....my libraries don't currently have any of them. And sorry to be MIA lately! I've had kid stuff, holiday stuff and I was in charge of a big event that just wrapped up. No time for me lately.🙃 Hope to get on track again. 3y
GingerAntics @JaclynW that‘s fine. This is a crazy time of year for everyone. I think that‘s why waiting until the new year will be a good move, especially for something like philosophy. There is so much to think about with it. 3y
GingerAntics @JaclynW I have access to two libraries (and possibly soon three) and seriously neither has ANY of these books. I guess philosophy just isn‘t of enough interest, which is unfortunate. Maybe when I have a job again, I should get a copy of Plato at the Googleplex for each library (and maybe the little free library near here). 3y
GingerAntics @JaclynW @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie okay, so I have a phone interview with one company and an in person interview with another company tomorrow. There is also another phone interview that still needs to be scheduled with a third company. The in person job, I can literally see from my front window, so 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 for that one for sure. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 3y
JaclynW @GingerAntics Best of luck to you! 3y
JaclynW @GingerAntics Agreed. It's unfortunate that these books are difficult to come by. I will have to ask if my library will order them. 3y
GingerAntics @JaclynW that‘s a good idea. What better way to get more people into philosophy than to try and get the library to buy them. Once it‘s more consistently safe, I wonder if I could convince the library to start a philosophy reading group. There could be one for jr high and high school kids and another for adults. Heck, if they ordered the right books, there could be a group for elementary age kids, too. 3y
GingerAntics @JaclynW @TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I HAVE OFFICIALLY BEEN HIRED FOR THE OVERNIGHT SHIFT AT THE ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY TWO BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE!!! 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics OH YAY A HOLIDAY GIFT!!!! I‘m so very happy for you. Plus so much writing material to be had!!! ✍🏼 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie right?! I can get all the philosophy books!!! So many philosophy books!!! 😂🤣😂 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 3y
kspenmoll @GingerAntics So sooo thrilled for your new job!!!!!!!!! And right in your neighborhood!!! 💃💃🎉🎉 3y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll isn‘t it great!!! 3y

I know we‘ve already chosen our next few reads, but I rediscovered the philosophy and pop culture series last night. It might be a fun way to explore philosophy in the things we already enjoy, plus they are collections of articles written by living philosophers, so that would be a little different, too. Just a thought. You can explore the entire series at the website https://andphilosophy.com/books/

GingerAntics Not sure living philosophers fits the whole Dead Philosophers Society idea, but they could certainly be interesting. #AdventuresInPhilosophy #DeadPhilosophersSociety
