Louisiana's Way Home
Louisiana's Way Home | Kate DiCamillo
38 posts | 50 read | 25 to read
From two-time Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo comes a story of discovering who you are and deciding who you want to be. When Louisiana Elefantes granny wakes her up in the middle of the night to tell her that the day of reckoning has arrived and they have to leave home immediately, Louisiana isnt overly worried. After all, Granny has many middle-of-the-night ideas. But this time, things are different. This time, Granny intends for them never to return. Separated from her best friends, Raymie and Beverly, Louisiana struggles to oppose the winds of fate (and Granny) and find a way home. But as Louisianas life becomes entwined with the lives of the people of a small Georgia town including a surly motel owner, a walrus-like minister, and a mysterious boy with a crow on his shoulder she starts to worry that she is destined only for good-byes. (Which could be due to the curse on Louisiana's and Grannys heads. But that is a story for another time.) Called one of DiCamillos most singular and arresting creations by The New York Times Book Review, the heartbreakingly irresistible Louisiana Elefante was introduced to readers in Raymie Nightingale and now, with humor and tenderness, Kate DiCamillo returns to tell her story.

March is done but was just ok for me. I am definitely in the minority but there was a major part of the plot that I didn't care for.

Back to Feb's pick now🙂

Had the house to myself for the first time in 2 months, so I did a lot of #audiocleaning today! This was such a sweet story - I loved it as much as, or maybe even more than, Raymie Nightingale.

Onceuponatime I really enjoy this whole series! ❤️ 5y
TrishB I can‘t even remember what having the house to yourself is like! 5y
Johanna414 @TrishB it was soooooooo nice! I couldn't believe how much I got done without a 2 and 4 year old under foot 5y
Johanna414 @Onceuponatime I cant wait to read Beverly's story! I'm going in to work today to get the library closed up for summer, so I plan on bringing it home with me 5y

#MagicalMay Day 16: Husband made a #feast of embutido (a carryover from Spanish tradition roughly translated to pork roll but maybe more like meat loaf of sorts) with my mother‘s recipe mostly, but with a slight twist that is uniquely his as well.

So. Amazing. DiCamillo‘s characters are so lifelike in their struggles, their fears, and their joys. It‘s what makes her stories so beautiful and unique. Did I cry? Most definitely. 2nd book out of the trilogy of The Three Rancheros. Put the 3rd on hold as an ebook with my library.

I got this ARC back in 2018 before I admitted to myself that I'm not great at keeping up with ARCs. Although it took me a while to finally read it, this sweet little middle-grade novel hit the spot today. It's a story of identity, trust, disappointment, and unwanted independence that reads like a short story. It was also a great way to start the month.

ImperfectCJ @BayouGirl85 Full disclosure: While there's a Louisiana connection, it takes place primarily in Georgia (and a tiny bit of Florida). Sweet story, though, and well worth the read. :-) 5y
TheAromaofBooks I'm definitely the same with ARCs! When I first start book blogging I thought that aspect sounded like fun, but it actually stresses me out! Now I only read maybe 3-4 a year and only if I truly think I'm going to enjoy the book! 5y

Bare-bones BuJo #bookspinbonanza list. ("Bare-bones" because I didn't do anything to prettify it.) I've already started The Office (17th on the list), but otherwise I'm going to try to stick with this order. So glad I have so many mg books on here.

@TheAromaofBooks Thanks so much for hosting!

This trilogy is growing on me. Louisiana‘s grandma takes her on a drive in the middle of night, with no expect to return. Now she must find her way home.

I decided to try this audiobook through OverDrive. I am so glad I did because I am loving it! I read some Kate DiCamillo books with my children when they were younger & I fell in love with her writing. Even though my kids are too old for me to read to them now, I thoroughly enjoy taking in her books on my own! This book is very sweet & I imagine it‘s likely to make me cry happy tears at some point.

Do you have a favorite children‘s book author?

JennyM My daughter is reading this now and loves it 💕 5y
Butterfinger I have several - Christopher Paul Curtis, Gary Paulsen, Katherine Applegate just to name a few... 5y
rretzler Did you read the first one? Raymie Nightingale? And the third one, Beverly Right Here is coming soon! I loved Raymie and Louisiana and am looking forward to hearing Beverly‘s story! 5y

Absolutely loved this book! Louisiana was my favourite character in the first book of this trilogy, RAYMIE NIGHTINGALE and she is equally delightful in her own story. Looking forward to the next book in the series about Beverly.

Louisiana is abandoned (again) and needs to con her way out of trouble (again). There is humor, southern-belle tendencies, and a lot of heart. The writing is pretty simplistic.

"I said, 'What is that smell?' ... He said, ' That's cake, darling.' I liked that answer very much. I think that 'cake' is a very good word in general and that people should use it as an answer to questions more often."

Cake is always the right answer ??

So excited to give this to my niece. 10 is the recommended age, but I feel Everleigh is mature for her age and will be able to handle this book.

I enjoyed this myself. Sad, yes, but very well written.

I bought this for my 8 year old niece, but I am reading it first. Hoping that if I read it first we can have something to bond over, she is incredibly shy.

AmyG My niece turns 8 in April. Can you post how this is? 6y
Rissa1 @AmyG Yes. My concern for Everleigh (my niece) is that the synopsis makes me believe the book may be too sad. 6y

Every time I finish a DiCamillo book, I sit and think about it. I do it because I‘m sure that‘s her point behind the book. And I do it because I can‘t not think about it. This book is stupendous - love it beyond expression. I preordered this book 4 months ago and it was worth the wait. DiCamillo is a master story-teller, master writer, and master heart-wrencher. Read it. It‘s for adults or kids. Read it now. #louisianaswayhome #katedicamillo

Another emotionally charged upcoming title by children's author Kate DiCamillo. Louisiana Elefante of the Flying Elefantes is abandoned by her eccentric grandmother in the south which leads her to find her own journey through the characters that she meets. Fans will embrace this sweet story that is a spin-off of Raymie Nightingale.
