The Advertisement: A Victorian Romance | Mimi Matthews

She Wanted SanctuaryBattered, desperate, and afraid, Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means travelling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey is not at all the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill--though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome--is anything but a romantic hero.He Needed RedemptionBitter, brooding, and vengeful, Justin Thornhill has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison. Now, firmly established in the grandest house in King's Abbot, he needs someone to smooth the way for him with the villagers. Someone to manage his household--and warm his bed on occasion. What he needs, in short, is a wife and a matrimonial advertisement seems the perfect way to acquire one.Their marriage was meant to be a business arrangement and nothing more. A dispassionate union free from the entanglements of love and affection. But when Helena's past threatens to destroy all that she holds dear, will Justin's burgeoning feelings for his new wife compel him to come to her rescue? Or will dark secrets of his own force him to let her go?

I picked up the first in this series (tagged) on a whim from Hoopla, and quickly moved right onto the second book. I finished both of these in only a handful of days. I really enjoyed the characterization of the love interests and buildup of their romances. I didn‘t mind that they weren‘t particularly steamy, but I would have appreciated more description of their love scenes compared to the way the author “yadda yaddas” completely over the sex.

Bookzombie I have read one book and a novella by Matthews. I enjoyed them both but I think most of her books are considered “clean.” I read 3y

This my second book by this author, and I‘m enjoying her writing. Set in 1859 England, Helena (an earl‘s daughter) has been terribly abused by her uncle (the current earl). He wishes to gain her inheritance and is working to have her committed to an asylum. Desperate, she answers a matrimonial advertisement and escapes to Devon. She meets Justin, a guilt-ridden ex-soldier, who was held captive and tortured in India. The two marry, she for 🔻

robinb protection, he for companionship and a lady to take his abbey home in hand. However, when he discovers her place in society he begins to doubt their union.
This is a sweet romance with villains, a heroic and honorable hero and a frightened but determined heroine. I especially liked the chemistry between the leads. Heartwarming story. 4/5⭐️

BarbaraBB Thank you dear Robin for the lovely Christmas card. It‘s always such a pleasure to receive mail from you ❤️❤️ 4y
robinb @BarbaraBB Yay, it made it! I think international mail is definitely traveling faster than domestic. 😊 Merry Christmas, sweet friend! 💕 4y
BarbaraBB I think so too, I hope my Christmas cards will reach you before the end of the year but it seems like all mail slows down upon arriving in the US! 🤞🏽 4y
robinb @BarbaraBB That‘s OK...it can just be my new year‘s card. 😉 4y

This is a “proper romance” which has love and relationship but no sex scenes. In 1859 England, Helena answers an advertisement and marries Justin. Love isn‘t the reason they‘re marrying, but of course they fall for one another as the story progresses. I wish the story was a little bit longer because I‘d like a little more about Justin and Helena after it ends. I adore the details of this time period like clothes, balls, and societal norms.

Coming up next in my isolation list. Sadly I haven't been getting as much "me" time as I'm still putting in 40 hours from home. #aprilreads #romances

Helen answers an advertisement for a wife in the middle of nowhere. Justin is back from the war, where he was a prisoner and just wants a woman to help take care of his home and to be a companion, but Helena needs help and protection. I adored this book, great characters and the mystery and drama was well done. Really good book!

A sweet Victorian romance with a woman on the run who marries a scarred ex-army officer because she knows he will keep her safe. While there are a number of triggering situations, the book is overall positive and gentle in it‘s romance and it‘s treatment of these hard issues. #romantsy
