I enjoyed hearing/listening to Ibtihaj Muhammad‘s journey from HS athlete to Olympian. She did throw plenty of shade around but I‘m sure her frustration over years of micro & macro aggressions were stressful, hateful & difficult to endure. One of my huge pet peeves is not taking agency over your own life. While Ibtihaj has had great success, she spent the majority of this book complaining about how her teammates, coaches (both her chosen personal ones and various team ones), & her all-African-American fencing club treated her. She just seemed to take a backseat and not demand to be treated with respect.

But she did accomplish a lot, mostly on her own, so kudos, in the end. 2.5⭐️

Ibtihaj and I did not go to Duke at the same time, I‘ll say that. She‘s about 10 years younger than I am. But she just said she was the only hijabi on a campus of 6000 undergrads.

I had at least a dozen close female Muslim friends from my Arabic classes and at least 8 I can name 20 years later that wore hijabs, including my roommate sophomore year and the 4 other friends who lived in our apartment building.

Ah-mazing. This book makes me want to take on something like fencing. What a battle to fight for what you want at all costs. So sad to hear how many people in this day and ages caused road blocks for the author. America...we need to do better.

I liked this one. Good read about her experiences as a Muslim, African American woman and her road to becoming the first Muslim American woman in hijab to medal at the Olympics.

Very interesting read about Ibtihaj Muhammad and her path to Olympic greatness.

Finished my 2nd book for #24in48 and it was awesome! I listened to the audio book and my only critic is that the author was the narrator and that doesn't always work. Read this book! Now what's next???? 😄😄😄

Hour 12 challenge for #24in48 a book that's expanded your worldview. I picked this book because I don't normally read "sport" books, and her story sounded really interesting. I'm so glad I did! She is awesome and I love her passion and the support she's has from her family. So inspiring and entertaining! I want to be a fencer now! ???

Highly recommend read. Muhammad gives explicit detail to what her life has been like as a Muslim African American women who chooses to wear a hijab. She discusses representation and her struggles against discrimination as she competes in an elite majority white sport. I really enjoyed this book and thought she did a great job telling her story.
