I Am Not Your Final Girl
I Am Not Your Final Girl: Poems | Claire Holland
11 posts | 9 read | 18 to read
From Claire C. Holland, a timely collection of poetry that follows the final girl of slasher cinema - the girl who survives until the end - on a journey of retribution and reclamation. From the white picket fences of 1970s Haddonfield to the apocalyptic end of the world, Holland confronts the role of women in relation to subjects including feminism, violence, motherhood, sexuality, and assault in the world of Trump and the MeToo movement. Each poem centers on a fictional character from horror cinema, and explores the many ways in which women find empowerment through their own perceived monstrousness.

I need more feminist poetry inspired by horror movies in my life. The premise behind this collection is brilliant and the execution is excellent. Holland uses the inherent darkness from her source material like a mag light, both as a light to lend perspective and as a weapon to fight the things that are trying to smother us. Definitely Recommend.

Anybody have book suggestions for any of the #readharder categories? The ones pictured and the ones that aren‘t pictured. #readharder #booksuggestions

Aimeesue Every time I see “AOC” these days, I think of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Made this list a little confusing. 😂 6y
Aimeesue The Poet X, Woman AOC, ; Fox 8, George Saunders, animal POV (and short!); Why I Jump, neurodiverse; (edited) 6y
Vexingcircumstance @Aimeesue I actually own Why I Jump. I‘ve had it for years. It was a gift from a friend and I haven‘t read it. 6y
Vexingcircumstance @Aimeesue someone on Instagram said the same thing about AOC and they also said they wanted to read a book about Ocasio-Cortez in Space. And as soon as I read that I was like “damn now so do i” 6y
Aimeesue @Vexingcircumstance Now so do I! I say we put AOC in charge of the “Space Force.” Then we‘ve got a shot at having such a force be able to accomplish anything worthwhile. 😄 6y

A feminist poetry collection inspired by horror films? Yes please! Some of the poems I really liked & others were okay, so overall the rating is between so-so & a pick, but I really appreciated the subject matter. It also made me realize that there are quite a few horror movies that i have yet to watch/rewatch!

It is available to read on Kindle Unlimited, otherwise the Kindle edition is only $1.99.

MaleficentBookDragon Stacked and bought. Thanks for the heads up. 6y
Reggie Have you watched the new Halloween? I swear it‘s a feminist movie and I‘m not being sarcastic. This poem totally took me back to the night I watched it. 6y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @Reggie No I haven't watched it yet, once I can rent it i will though! I love the Halloween movies! 6y

Feminist poems inspired by horror movies. I read horror but I haven't watched that many horror films nor do I read a good deal of poetry. These were striking even without the background -- I was able to appreciate the feelings behind them even missing that last layer. I imagine horror film aficionados would derive even greater pleasure from this. I read this on #kindleunlimited but plan to buy the paperback. Highly recommended.
