WELCOME TO THE DARK HEART OF CORNWALL . . . 'Waites brings all his storytelling talent and experience to this chilling tale' Lee Child 'One of the very best crime writers we have' Mark Billingham He was running from his past. She was running from her future. Sometimes helping a stranger is the last thing you should do . . . The Cornish village of St Petroc is the sort of place where people come to hide. Tom Killgannon is one such person. An ex-undercover cop, Tom is in the Witness Protection Programme hiding from some very violent people and St Petroc's offers him a chance to live a safe and quiet life. Until he meets Lila. Lila is a seventeen-year-old runaway. When she breaks into Tom's house she takes more than just his money. His wallet holds everything about his new identity. He also knows that Lila is in danger from the travellers' commune she's been living at. Something sinister has been going on there and Lila knows more than she realises. But to find her he risks not only giving away his location to the gangs he's in hiding from, but also becoming a target for whoever is hunting Lila. 'A chilling slice of country noir. Great stuff' Mick Herron 'A superbly atmospheric book full of menace andsecrets' Tom Wood 'Martyn Waites is already crime fiction royalty . . . Tom Killgannon is one of the best new characters in modern fiction. I bloody loved this book' Steve Cavanagh

I believe this series has potential. The book was an easy, fast read, but a bit all over the place, and too many characters. It was like Peter May meets Enid Blyton meets Ann Cleeves, but not quite as good as the aforementioned authors. Based on what I‘ve read the next book is a lot better, and I will definitely read it! An ex-copper works as a bartender in a village, and lots of sinister things are going on. Modern vs tradition. 3+ stars

TrishB I have this one but not been tempted to start as yet! 5y

There I was innocently walking by some shelves at the library, and suddenly saw this orange circle with some text in it. Well, couldn‘t really leave the book there, right? This is how someone could easily kidnap me! Anyone read it?

TrishB I have on the tbr, win in a competition- I‘ll await your review 😁 5y
EadieB No have not read it but I have this book by this author 5y
MySharonaK Sounds interesting! Let us know 🌷 5y

Andrew65 No, not know it. Looks like he start of a new series. The second book has a much higher rating than this one, 4.08 v 3.46. The cover is pulling me in though. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 We usually forgive an author if the first one in a series is not really as good as it should be 😅 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Most definitely! 5y
eanderson 🤣 Yep, I would be that easy to kidnap as well! 5y
julesG I might have it on #MountTBR. Will investigate in the morning. 5y
Crazeedi I haven't seen this, but as @Andrew65 says the cover is intriguing! Interested in your thoughts, and the first of a series usually isn't as good, I agree 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi There seems to be two routes for series. Sometimes a great first book but not able to keep to that standard or weaker first book but series improves as it develops. (edited) 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads I haven‘t read it, but I‘d give it a go if you like it. Looks good, if we go by covers, right? And, most of us like Peter May, soooo...we should certainly give it a spin. Good eye! ♥️ 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 I think you‘re exactly right about the first books of authors. ‘Tis a pity, that, no? 😂 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I think you may be right in some instances, but thinking about the series that have kept me coming back for more, are the ones where the first was sorta good and got better and better. There have been some series that got better and better, and then just died for me also... 5y
Andrew65 Yes there are also those series @Crazeedi 5y

Pickpick

My easter weekend off work has begun with finishing this enjoyable thriller which has the horror and feel of 'the wicker man' but at times i worried could have drifted towards the comedy of 'hot fuzz'. In the end i think it stayed the right side of the divide for a crime novel and ill definitely look out for more and also now try the authors other pen name tania carver. To summarise hiding undercover cop battles pagan religion baddies - good fun.

batsy Ooh, sounds good! Been in my TBR for awhile. 6y

Mehso-so

The opening chapter to this book drew me in immediately. It is not even a full page but it was enough to grab my attention. The story was good. It was well written. I think there was some missed potential. I think they could have gone more in to the religion and practices used.
The book is quite long and it was quite drawn out. There was more action at the end. . I would recommend his book but I think it had some missed opportunities.

This is the first chapter of my current read. I was literally drawn in from the get to. I‘m enjoying it so far! Blurb: The Cornish village of St Petroc is the sort of place where people come to hide.
