My Last Duchess
My Last Duchess | Daisy Goodwin
Gorgeous, spirited and extravagantly rich, Cora Cash is the closest thing 1890s New York society has to a princess. Her masquerade ball is the prelude to a campaign that will see her mother whisk Cora to Europe, where Mrs Cash wants nothing less than a title for her daughter. In England, impoverished blue-bloods are queueing up for introductions to American heiresses, overlooking the sometimes lowly origins of their fortunes. Cora makes a dazzling impression, but the English aristocracy is a realm fraught with arcane rules and pitfalls, and there are those less than eager to welcome a wealthy outsider...

This was a fun, frothy read based on the Gilded Age trend of wealthy American heiresses marrying Englishmen with titles and huge estates that require an influx of new money for upkeep. The fictional heroine of this story Cora Cash faces some difficulties adjusting to her new life as a Duchess but it made for an entertaining read. This book received mixed reviews on Goodreads, but I just went along for the ride and enjoyed it.

Gotta love when you pick up a book 24 hours ago and you‘re already past page 100. The blurb on the cover says this is an “instant tonic for ‘Downton Abbey‘ withdrawals”. I‘m sold!

Ncostell I have this book in my towering TBR stack. I‘ll have to move it up, sounds great! 5y

It is absolutely #shocking that I mowed just last week and my yard was already so long I had to mow it again 😩. So now I‘m relaxing on my back deck trying to pick a book to read! #30junebooks @howjessreads

Hestapleton Ooo what‘s the middle book? 5y
PathfinderNicole @Hestapleton this one! It‘s to fulfill a “true crime” prompt for a reading challenge I‘m doing. She talks about 19th century murder and how the cases captivated the Victorians and gave rise to Detective fiction :) 5y
Hestapleton @PathfinderNicole I love true crime! Stacked! 5y

PathfinderNicole @Sweetkokoro thanks! I got it at Disney on Ice a few months ago and it came with a snow cone in it 😂. I mostly use it now for slushy alcoholic drinks 😬. 5y
Sweetkokoro That‘s such a cute idea, a snow cone in a cup, I‘m gonna have to do that. But your current use of it is pretty funny. 5y

This novel loosely based on the life of Consuelo Vanderbilt. Cora Cash is manipulated into marrying Ivo, the Duke of Wareham. Cora's inheritance will help the crumbling Lulworth Castle. She aims to please her husband, but scandal, betrayal, and distance threaten Cora's ability to run the Castle her way and come to terms with the secret all of England know about but her.

Reading while getting hair cut and colored. I had no idea about the magazine Titled Americans- a catalogue of English men with a legacy (but oftentimes poor) for nouveau Riche American girls to find a beau so they can have money and a title!! Crazy!

My God this book was boring. I kept reading because 1) I hate ditching books, hate it more when I'm more than half way through and 2) I still had hopes for it to pick up and 3) I love Daisy Goodwin. It's OK Daisy you're allowed one bad book and it's ok that it's your debut book. You can tell she's Improved from this book.

Quirkybookworm I didn‘t care too much for it either. 6y
BookishRedhead @Quirkybookworm I think if it was more about Bertha, it would've been more interesting 6y

1. Love butterball cookies. We make them every year.
2. These days I'm going to say hosting.
3. So far, I've read 115 books.
4. Neither. Christmas Vacation all the way.
5. Just wish we could all get along and everyone would stop being so mean and angry.

I'm fascinated by the Gilded Age and have been wondering about this author's books for quite a while, so I finally gave this one a try. Liked it very much, and even grew to like the heroine, even though I thought she was a little annoying in the beginning. A good read. I'll definitely try other things by Goodwin.

Excited to read them!

A blurb on the back cover describes this book as a guilty pleasure. Personally I don't think reading should ever make one feel guilty. I understand the intention of the comment, but sometimes a reader just wants simple entertainment without having to analyze literary elements. I do enough thinking at work right now. Bring on the guilty pleasure!

Foxyfictionista I don't believe in guilty pleasures either. We should read whatever we want without guilt!! 8y

I really wanted to like this book, but with so many unsympathetic characters, I just couldn't do it. I think the author does a good job of portraying the lifestyle of the aristocracy and the social climbing of a segment of wealthy American society, but it wasn't enough to make me sorry that the book came to an end. I left it on the book shelf at the country house in Derbyshire where we were when I finished it.

Packing for our trip to England--we fly out in Thursday--has to include reading material. My husband picked up The Yard, and The American Heiress was my choice. I didn't want anything that requires too much concentration. Of course, I'll have my Kindle, too, because one book is never enough.

MrBook You're so lucky 😁👏🏻👍🏻! 8y
