Never Mind: A Patrick Melrose Novel 1
Never Mind: A Patrick Melrose Novel 1 | Edward St Aubyn
11 posts | 16 read | 20 to read
In the deep south of France, Patrick Melrose has the run of his parents' house and magical garden, and the company of his vivid imagination. Yet his tyrannical father rules this world with considered cruelty, while his mother makes her escape into alcoholism. The life of the house is intense and unpredictable, and never more so than on this particular day. David and Eleanor are to host a dinner party, and the shocking events that precede the guests' arrival will shape the rest of Patrick's life. Never Mind is the first of the Melrose novels. Moving between heartbreak and devastating wit, it explores the damaging reach of parenthood and introduces an unforgettable cast of characters.

This first installment of the Patrick Melrose novels was shocking in its swings from dry, laugh out loud hilarity to unthinkable domestic brutality. Proceed at your own risk, and I don‘t recommend for parents. There‘s no way I‘m not reading the next ones (and can‘t wait to watch the show with Benedict Cumberbatch).

Heideschrampf I dont remember which one of the series i once read, but i do remember that i had to set it aside a lot because all of the cruelty. I saw st aubyn at a talk once and was struck by how strong a character he had emerged from such toils 6y
cariashley @Heideschrampf wow seriously. I did read in a review somewhere that it‘s very much based on his own life, which is horrifying. 6y

Probably the most ghastly cast of characters you're likely to come across, headed by the awful David, the abusive father of Patrick who is 5 years old in this first volume. And yet, possibly the funniest, blackest novel I've ever read.

The #patrickmelrose novels open with Patrick staying in the South of France with his horrific parents. Some of this is admittedly difficult to read due to sensitive subject matter, but this is contrasted with the biting black humour used to depict the cast of unpleasant, snobbish characters.

This is a book that punches you in the stomach. The characters are dissected to the marrow, with a merciless but still empathic pen. Morally repugnant they retain their humanity and are so much the worse for it. I will be thinking about this book for a long time to come. I wish I could give it 10 picks.

I wanted to dislike this book, I have no clue why. I didn't. Equally as funny as it is horrifying. That horrifying that on occasion I did find myself actually wanting to physically move away from the book but then by the next page I found myself being thoroughly amused! On to the next one....

This novel is by turns hilarious and horrifying--I was laughing one moment and cringing the next (wondering if I could possibly read on). It's a testament to the author that these transitions never feel clumsy or mishandled and that's what kept me reading. I can see the comparisons to Wodehouse and Wilde in the humour and observation of the privileged and wealthy but there's a dark edge to it in this book. An interesting read to start off 2018.

#unlikeablecharacters #aprilbookshowers
Im three books into this series of five novels about the life of patrick melrose- im still not sure if i am actually enjoying them but i will continue to the end however book 1 stunned me and i class his father David Melrose as one of the most dreadful characters ive met in fiction.

shawnmooney I still haven't gotten to this series of novels! I have the first two already bought and downloaded on Kindle. 8y
andrew61 The first was the best so far although disturbing but well written, book 2 was a day in new York very drug/sex style bad behaviour, book 3 British upper classes behaving badly - worth trying although i feel like im on a conveyor belt and I have to get to the end. Personally im in no desperate rush to read book 4 even though it was booker nominated. 8y
Hobbinol I have these books, but I'm a little nervous about starting them. I've preordered Aubyn's version of King Lear for Hogarth. I'll probably start in on those this fall I hope. 8y
andrew61 @Hobbinol book 1 is definitely worth reading and it is a book that doesn't take long to finish but has a bog impact. Ill reserve view on other until i finish the series. 8y

Boyfriend walked in with a huge book under his arm. Got all excited thinking it was for me.

Then I saw the cover.

"at the beginning, there had been talk of using some of her money to start a home for alcoholics. in a sense they had succeeded."

Dylangrrl I love all his work. I wish more people would discover him!! Happy reading! 8y
wonga @Dylangrrl I've barely started but so far i really like it 👍 I think a lot of people will discover his writing since Benedict Cumberbatch is set to produce and star in a miniseries based on the 5 Patrick Melrose novels 😀 8y
Dylangrrl Ooh!! I didn't know that!! Exciting! 8y
