I enjoyed Some Hope as much as I enjoyed Never Mind, the first Patrick Melrose novel. The second, Bad News, is still my favourite and that's because it's solely from Patrick's POV. I love Patrick as the narrator. Some Hope, like Never Mind, has several POVs which helps the reader get into the headspace of the wealthy and titled to fully comprehend how absurd these privileged people really are but the Patrick bits were, of course, my favourite.

This book! Holy moly! This second Patrick Melrose novel is fantastic. It takes place in New York where Patrick has gone to collect his father's ashes, and thus begins a drug-fuelled trip through the streets and boroughs of the city. The descriptions of drug use are graphic and intense so this novel may not be for the faint of heart. I have a needle phobia so some parts were tough to read but it was worth it and I ended up loving this book.

This novel is by turns hilarious and horrifying--I was laughing one moment and cringing the next (wondering if I could possibly read on). It's a testament to the author that these transitions never feel clumsy or mishandled and that's what kept me reading. I can see the comparisons to Wodehouse and Wilde in the humour and observation of the privileged and wealthy but there's a dark edge to it in this book. An interesting read to start off 2018.
