Odd One Out
Odd One Out | Nic Stone
From the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin comes this illuminating exploration of old friendships, new crushes, and the path to self-discovery. Sure to please fans of Becky Albertalli, Angie Thomas, and Jason Reynolds. Courtney Cooper and Jupiter Sanchez have been best friends and neighbors since they were seven years old. And despite Courtney's best efforts to suppress it, he can't help being hopelessly in love with Jupe. But a relationship with the girl next door isn't in the cards because Jupiter has been out of the closet for almost as long as she's known Courtney. Then Rae Chin moves to town, and Courtney thinks he's finally found a girl he could fall for who isn't Jupiter. The only problem: Jupiter is falling for Rae, too. From the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin, Nic Stone embraces the journey of first loves and finding yourself.

Well, this title is apt. I didn‘t enjoy this as much as the other Nic Stone reads - largely bc both female characters felt vapid. I do feel like this was honest to how teenagers would act but all was forgiven a little too easily and everyone was far too codependent for this to be a happy story. #AuthorAMonth

All the love for this funny, full-hearted story of three smart teens navigating the complexities of their feelings for each other. Just terrific in all the best possible ways.

This book was sadly disappointing. I really wanted to like it because it deals with an important subject but I just didn‘t. I didn‘t really care about the characters and many times I went “are allo people really like that???” which certainly didn‘t help. The ending was also a let down for me but that‘s because of the expectations I had going in to it. #translatedbooks

I had a couple of issues with this (bi-erasure being the most significant) that for me served to undermine the very purpose the author claimed she wanted the book to have. And it also seemed less 'struggles with emerging sexual identities' & more 'horny teenagers perving on/groping each other '. But the twisty plot of sexual tension in a 'love triangle' was engrossing if a tad ridiculous. Then it got a little overwrought & ended on a flat note.

Knowing the intended audience, this message is well worth reading. The narrative structure of three voices is effective, even if you end up disliking all three characters. I cannot speak to how accurate a depiction this is, but it certainly feels like an honest struggle for identity that many readers need to have reflected or revealed to them. Stone draws out the drama in these relationships, letting readers have sympathy and some understanding.

I know some readers do not like the portrayal of bisexuality in this book, but I think the flexible labels and confusion is relatable for young readers, thus making it an important book for classroom libraries. I like the structure of the book - divided into three parts and reflective of the personalities of the narrators. I enjoyed it.

This began as a potentially interesting twist on the YA love triangle: Courtney is hopelessly in love with best friend Jupiter, who is a lesbian, who is falling for Rae the new girl, who is straight... or is she? If this were a comedy, it would likely be fairly Shakespearean. As the story was more dramatic though, I was often frustrated by three often manipulative and hypocritical teens who lied to each other on a pretty consistent basis.🤷🏻‍♀️

This book was a little too 'messy' for me which made it a little unrealistic. I was finding myself not liking any of the characters and they were a little ridiculous.

HUNH. Wanted to like this one so much more than I did. But no matter how much I didn‘t love some of this - or the actions of some of the protagonists - I am enjoying seeing Nic Stone grow as a writer and have successes with her books.

A love triangle that deals with issues of sexuality. An okay ya which didn‘t feel very fresh to me.

This book was a little disappointing. I loved the diversity of it and the characters but there was definite bi erasure that made me uncomfortable.

Emilymdxn Bi erasure in books makes me lose patience and get angry so quickly 😠😠 6y

tjwill I haven‘t read this one yet. How does this book show bi erasure? I hate when there are obvious holes like that. 6y

Quick YA read about a love triangle, sexual identity and friendship. For most of the story I felt it was an adult story because, although it is contemporary, it came off like an older person working through personal issues. That doesn‘t make the book any less relevant. Recommend.

Dear Martin was such a powerful book that when I saw Nic Stone had another book coming out I knew I had to read it. This book deals with three teens who are friends. All three of them are dealing with trying to figure out who they are and that includes their sexuality. Stone said she wrote this book because as she was growing up she didn't have books like this to read and she wanted teens growing up to know that it is okay to love who you love!

ElishaLovesBooks I just got this today! So glad you liked it! It looks promising! 6y

I really enjoyed Stone‘s debut Dear Martin & had high hopes for this one. Jupiter Sanchez & Courtney “Coop” Cooper are best friends—he‘s been in love with her forever but she‘s just not into boys. Along comes Rae Chin who is struggling with her sexual identity. The strength of the book lies in the frank & honest discussions these characters have about identity, sexuality, labels & more. Unfortunately, the story & pacing fell flat. Good, not great.

Day 6 of #agameoffavorites This is Nic Stone, who I had never heard of before today. The tagged book comes out in October and looks super good. Growing up she didn't always like the required readings because there were either no characters that looked like her or the characters that did look like her were slaves. So she didn't really have a favorite book.

Highly recommend. Stone said she wrote this book because she had questions growing up and there weren‘t books like this when she was growing up. I loved it. I love Stone‘s writing style. I think she has amazing character development and the dialogue between her characters is always spot on. Sexuality is complicated. This story is about 3 teenagers and love and discovering who you are and who you are attracted to. So damn good.
