I Might Regret This
I Might Regret This: Essays, Drawings, Vulnerabilities and Other Stuff | Abbi Jacobson
From the co-creator and co-star of the hit series Broad City, a hilarious and poignant collection about love, loss, work, comedy, and figuring out who you really are when you thought you already knew. When Abbi Jacobson announced to friends and acquaintances that she planned to drive across the country alone, she was met with lots of questions and opinions: Why wasn't she going with friends? Wouldn't it be incredibly lonely? The North route is better! Was it safe for a woman? The Southern route is the way to go! You should bring mace! And a common one... why? But Abbi had always found comfort in solitude, and needed space to step back and hit the reset button. As she spent time in each city and town on her way to Los Angeles, she mulled over the big questions-- What do I really want? What is the worst possible scenario in which I could run into my ex? How has the decision to wear my shirts tucked in been pivotal in my adulthood? In this collection of anecdotes, observations and reflections--all told in the sharp, wildly funny, and relatable voice that has endeared Abbi to critics and fans alike--readers will feel like they're in the passenger seat on a fun and, ultimately, inspiring journey. With some original illustrations by the author.

I would not say I am a fan of Abbi Jacobson. I have never seen anything she has done, including Broad City. My girlfriend thought I would like this and lent it to me. She was right. Abbi is funny, sweet, and sarcastic in these almost coming of age style stories about writing and acting, family, friendship, and heartbreak.

Why do people read my reviews? I love every book I read. This book was especially great. I'm about to embark on a road trip through the south so this was just awesome timing me reading this book. I thought I loved Abbi, but NOW I REALLY love Abbi. She was so raw and real with her emotions and all parts of her self in this book- she just let readers in like that! That's amazing!

I liked this. It‘s a bit of travel journal, a bit of a memoir and a lot of rambling and the thoughts that keep you awake at night - I like reading these to know I‘m not alone with the insane night time brain chatter!!

I watch all five seasons of Broad City earlier this year and I absolutely loved it. It was 100% perfect. I was so excited to read this but it was sort of meh. At the same time, it makes me wanna go on another long road trip.

I didn't know what to expect (maybe I didn't expect much). Probably between a pick and a so-so. I'll err on the positive—I did laugh.

Overdrive can't keep my pipeline full because of its stingy hold limit, so I'm really reaching for things to read. DH conked out early tonight, so I had extra jigsaw and reading time to myself.

jb72 What is with that hold limit? I don‘t get it at all. It should be unlimited. 5y
JoyBlue @jb72 I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who gets it! I mean, the loan limit is super-stingy, too. So, what difference does it make how many holds I have, since I can only check out 5 things at a time? It‘s not like I‘m hoarding books and keeping others waiting! Grrrr! Now I‘m rereading something I just read a month ago, since I‘m sort of at a loss [reading again for book club, but wouldn‘t really need to—it‘s still fresh in my mind]. 5y

Abbi is, as always, relatable and hilarious. She recounts her cross country solitary road trip, with many late-night insomnia sessions thrown in for good measure. It's not all fun and games, as she dives a lot into serious issues like mental health. But it is definitely like good conversation with a good friend: she's on point, tells a great story, and knows how to make you laugh!

On B&Bs:

"I don't even like ppl that much. I prefer being left alone. I'm hit or miss with small talk and awkwardly trying to make myself at home in a stranger's house is close to being my worse nightmare. I don't wanna insert myself into the drama about the zucchini! What the f**k am I doing at a bed & breakfast?!"

??? this is so me it hurts. I'm going through a rough time and this book is exactly what I need. I will NOT regret this ?

megnews I started this book but I not think it was the right time for us. I didn‘t get to that part but that‘s me too so I‘ll have to get back around to this one eventually. 5y
ShyBookOwl @megnews fair enough. Timing is everything. I'm in a transformative period in my life, and that's where she's at in the book, so it's worked out nicely. 5y
rabbitprincess Haha this was me on one of my family trips to the UK. We stayed at a B&B one night and I told my parents that they were going to be in charge of small talk with the other guests because I don't socialize until I've had my breakfast 😂 5y
ShyBookOwl @rabbitprincess Haha!! Yes. I unhappily went to a couple in Scotland and left the small talk to my husband. 5y

Having just watched the final season of Broad City, I finally borrowed Abbi's book on audio. I love a memoir read by the author, and this one has a strong start. The first chapter about the love letter from 1944 that was delivered to her mailbox in 2013 captivated me. I guess it was trendy news at the time, but as a non social media person, I had never heard the story. Feels like a good pick for a rainy day like today.

This was like reading someone‘s journal as they process their first real heartbreak while driving cross-country. It was funny and introspective and I enjoyed the depth and the diversions. I am a huge Broad City fan and may be biased, but this was a terrific quick read, the perfect palate cleanser after a huge fantasy novel. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Auditions for my next read are happening now... After The Ruin of Kings, I have no idea what sort of mood I‘m in.

SamAnne I loved the Great Believers. Especially poignant if you lived through the 80s AIDS crisis. And with a great art theme too. 6y

This book is a must-read for all young women, but my dad is reading it and enjoying it too. I related to this book on almost every level. Abbi talks about how to be creatively fulfilled, but also how to be a boss in a creative industry. I especially liked the chapter on letters, but I won‘t spoil it here. Premise: she takes a solo road trip after a breakup, but the book is so much more than that. Please pick up a copy today.

Abbi Jacobson chronicles a three week road trip as she ponders what she wants out of life and love. It is an enjoyable read and I particularly liked her illustrations of podcasts and albums she listened to, her hack for 'cado toast, and numerous "sleep studies" when she couldn't sleep.
Confession: I don't watch Broad City and this is probably a more enjoyable read if you do. I enjoyed it but don't expect it to stick.

I really enjoyed this. I identified with a lot of what she wrote about as we are from about the same generation, give or take a couple of years. I also recently made a similar roadtrip-albeit with friends- but have had my fair share of solo journeys. Jacobson is a great writer. There are some beautifully written passages. Definitely recommend for someone who is around my age and like minded 😊

This was a hit for me! I could easily relate to Abbi‘s idea of comfort in the form of solitude. Going on a road trip to clear your head & figure out stuff, sounded like something I‘d do. I could relate to a lot of her thoughts.

As a big fan of Broad City I really loved all the stories from behind the scenes & the creative process Abbi & Illana went through. Overall, I just really like Abbi based on what she shares. She‘s my kind of gal.

What a sweet memoir! Abbi Jacobson is heartbroken, so she decides to get out of the city (and her head) by going on a solo road trip. She chronicles her adventures with interludes of memories of her childhood, family, and of course, her path toward comedy. She‘s vulnerable and honest and refreshingly neurotic, exactly who I hoped she‘d be.

I love Broad City so I had to pick this up. I mostly enjoyed the read. I liked that I was able to relate to her in certain aspects of her life. I felt her on the anxiety and overthinking bit. The art was really cool. I felt like her tangents went a little too far at times.

I really enjoyed a lot of this book, especially as read by Abbi Jacobson in the #audiobook. Her vulnerability in essays about her breakup and her musings on random topics were alternately moving and funny. However I can't help but feel like this memoir needed more editing, to push some of the essays further to get to the meat of the topic, to cut some of the tangents, and to give the book as a whole a structure or focus that made sense #QueerBooks
