Running Like a Girl
Running Like a Girl: Notes on Learning to Run | Alexandra Heminsley
22 posts | 22 read | 20 to read
"In her twenties, Alexandra Heminsley spent more time drinking white wine than she did in pursuit of athletic excellence. When she decided to take up running in her thirties, she had high hopes for a blissful runner's high and immediate physical transformation. After eating three slices of toast with honey and spending ninety minutes on iTunes creating the perfect playlist, she hit the streets--and failed miserably. The stories of her first runs turn the common notion that we are all "born to run" on its head--and exposes the truth about starting to run: it can be brutal. Running Like a Girl tells the story of getting beyond the brutal part, how Alexandra makes running a part of her life, and reaps the rewards: not just the obvious things, like weight loss, health, and glowing skin, but self-confidence and immeasurable daily pleasure, along with a new closeness to her father--a marathon runner--and her brother, with whom she ultimately runs her first marathon"--

Not what I was expecting/ looking for exactly but…still super enjoyable.
Alexandra Heminsley decides at 29 that she‘s ready to take the athletic leap & run the London Marathon. This is her journey from couch potato to runner of multiple marathons. Alexandra is super self-deprecating, snarky & really delightful. She‘s also 25 years younger than I am. I‘m not looking to run a marathon but I would like to move off my couch. I wanted more how to👇🏼

Cinfhen and less “yes, you can!!!” Still, super inspiring and there was some useful information. I enjoyed getting to know Alex and her family. I see there are 2 more books written by Alexandra, which I‘m considering reading. But now I need to find a book, that‘s a bit more technical 😉 3y

Pretty much what you'd want from an amateur runner's running memoir: some funny stories, some inspiring ones, some that make you say, "I know how that feels," and others that make you say, "I wouldn't have guessed, thanks for sharing." It's slanted toward beginning runners, so if you've been contemplating that first pair of running shoes, this might be your book.

Little sis has a kindle on my account while she is living in China so that she can take advantage of my massive kindle library. This also means I buy books for her to read that are not my thing. She‘s a runner who has been going stir crazy because of the quarantine rules, so I‘m sure you can spot the latest books that are going to be confusing the suggestions algorithm...

I gave "Running Like a Girl" 4 stars on my first read and I think I enjoyed it even more second time round. I'd recommend this book for anyone who wants to run, or is thinking about running, but needs that extra push to get out the door - 5 stars!

My full review is up on my blog now ?

Encouraging, funny, and totally relatable! Pushed the “average joe” runner like myself to realize the purpose and power of running. Definitely recommend to people who are thinking about joining the running community or to any runner who is looking for a light, funny read 👍🏼

#BookFitnessChallenge Week 2 Day 7

Hit my steps and my calories (yay!) and got a third run in, along with a couple of walks. Tried to listen to my audiobook but my brain has other stuff going on so I didn‘t really take anything in, going to have to rewind and relisten 😩

Picture is of Charlecote House, a National Trust property that we visited at the weekend. (Because pictures of English suburbia where I run aren‘t that interesting!)

Cinfhen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
OrangeMooseReads Good work! That happens to me with audiobooks as well. 6y
wanderinglynn Sometimes you just need to run and let the thoughts flow. I find running to be meditative because eventually the thoughts flow and I‘m just in the zone. Great job! 🙌🏻 6y

Getting in some practice for the #BookFitnessChallenge! My goals are to read at least 9 books over the 6 weeks of the challenge, and do 105k steps per week, including 3 runs. Warm-up tonight in the form of a 10K race 😁

@wanderinglynn

TheEllieMo @wanderingtessa I‘ve been running for a couple of years, started with couch to 5k and though I‘d never be able to get to 5k! 6y

I really like it this audiobook. It bothers me that it was narrated by an American while book is about a British runner as well as I didn't like the fact that they change pounds for dollars but was a good narration. It motivates me to run more and was a great recommendation from @angela_fi13

Today is all about sport: Roller Derby World Cup and reading prep for my first 5K this spring (actual running will occur when the derby games are over this afternoon.)
This book also counts for the “book about or involving a sport” for #popsugar2018 challenge.

Just take another sip & remember only 4 more days til Friday.
.
.
Day 21 of #booksacrossoceans is books with sports.
.
.
I played softball badly & did color guard fairly well in school. As an adult I've run 2 #marathons and a lot of #halfmarathons.
I'm hoping to do a #readathon next month where you can choose the subject, author or type of books you read.
.
.
What sports did/do you play?

CocoReads I ran track (badly) my sophomore year and took dance classes (also badly but more fun) junior and senior years. I'm not great at the sports things but recognize I need to move more so I try to do some walking and yoga type stuff (also bad-but I think I'll get better the more I do it). I did take some barre classes during my brief y membership and they were hard but I did enjoy them. 7y
Alfoster I swam in high school and still hold the record for the 25 yd freestyle (well...it's only because the year I graduated they discontinued that race as it's only one length of the pool)😂😂😂!! 7y
Zelma Long-time softball player here too. 👋 played a little lacrosse too. as an adult, my weight and fitness levels have fluctuated. However, I love being more active than not - yoga, cardio kickboxing, aqua aerobics, Pilates. I just started Crossfit and that's been going really well. 7y
